National Mission Institution 21st Century Community Learning Centers
January 18, 2020 marked the celebration of the great Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. In honor of his national hol-iday, “Martin Luther King Day”, Partners In Ministry’s (PIM) staff, students, and volunteers participated in the “National Day of Service”. The morning started with staff members gathering in the community garden. Youth Empowered to Succeed (Y.E.S.) participants raised the beds of the garden and learned different gar-dening techniques. Staff members help wash, cut, and bag the collard greens for a PIM future collard sand-wich sale. Strengthening Youth through Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (S.Y.S.T.E.M.) stu-dents and staff took time to beautify and paint the 70-year-old campus building. Students watched a docu-mentary based on the great works of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Many students appreciated and understood
Dr. King’s legacy and heroism throughout this great nation.
A National Holiday
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is an Ameri-
can National holiday that honors the
United States most influenced Civil
Rights leader. The day is observed on
the third Monday of January each year.
King's birthday is January 15, 1929. We
celebrate you, Dr. King!

Community gardens are part of the sharing economy. They
make it possible for many people to enjoy a resource – in this
case, land for gardening, or sustainable food- that they could-
n’t afford on their own. However, it’s not just the gardeners
themselves who gain from community gardens – the benefits
extend to the rest of the community and even to society as a
whole.
Whatever your location, get some greens growing in the vegetable garden this year. If planted at the right time, growing col-
lard greens will be an easy and worthwhile gardening experience.
Forever Grateful
SYSTEM Afterschool Program Director, Dr. Carolyn Banks
taught her SYSTEM students the difference from collard
greens and turnip greens. She focused on the uniqueness of
both turnip and collard greens. The students were happy to get
down-and-dirty in the community garden.
Community members are offered fresh vegetables by visit-
ing our food bank the first and third Friday in the month
from 12:00 p.m.—2:00 p.m. and the second and fourth
Saturday in the month from 9:00 a.m.—12:00 p.m.

Partners In Ministry was blessed by a Scotland County resi-
dent, Ann Hatcher who donated a 2010 Buick Lucerne to the
ministry. Ms. Hatcher chose to donate to PIM because she
feels the work is “ outstanding”. Ms. Hatcher went on to say,
“the concept of what you all do for young people and the
outlet is wonderful.” We are thrilled to have community
members who give from the heart. Thank you so much!

W.I.O.A. Workshop: Interviewing Skills
Richmond Community College Employability Instructor, Ms. Netta Ridgeway assisted Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (W.I.O.A.) youth participants with meek interviewing skills and appearance tips. Each youth con-ducted a chart on the Do’s and Don’t of interview outfits for both men and women. Other topics included Effective Communication: Iden-tifying Soft Skills. Participants were giv-en a communication chart based on the five famous educational questions: who, what when, where, and how. Youth executed interviewing exercises.

Outreach Ministry
Scotland County Community members gather at the Resource & Referral Center for devotional fellow-
ship, activities, and giveaways. The Outreach Minis-try is designed to engage community members with variety of educational resources and excursions. The
Outreach Ministry opens from 10:00 a.m.— 12:00 p.m. For more information, please contact

Ms. Ridgeway gave youth basic inter-view questions where they could chal-lenge each other in interviewing skills. Each youth partnered up and interviewed each other to demonstrate the right and wrong ways during an interview.
This activity helped the youth practice acing job interviews and having sharp, ready answers. Ms. Ridgeway empha-sized the importance of confidence.

Getting to Know Our Staff Partners In Ministry employees many talented and certified educators from Scotland County Schools. One such as
Teacher Assistant, Wanda Monley who has been em-
ployed at PIM for five years. Mrs. Monley attraction
toward PIM’s educational ministry drew from past and
current involvement with her own children’s school as
well as substitute teaching. She finds enjoyment in
teaching and excitement in education. Mrs. Monley
considers her best teaching method to be the learner-
center method, which allows her to become not just the
teacher, but also the learner. She’s a big instiller on
active learning in her classroom and engages each of
her students in classroom participation. Ms. Monley’s
pursuit is starting her Master’s Degree in Criminal Jus-
tice and ultimately teaching in her own classroom
working with second graders. She feels one of the big-
gest problems affecting the youth in Scotland County is
not being able to transition from high school to the employment arena. Mrs. Monley expressed how PIM has allowed
students to become more aware of the programs that are offered n regards to the various learning opportunities such
as robotics, choir, mime, STEM, coding, etc.
“I have built professional relationships with my students by first earning their trust and teaching with passion and en-
thusiasm. If I could help each student succeed, I would help students elevate their reading skills. I think that it is so
important that children learn to read because it is not only essential but also necessary for them to become successful
in life.” - Wanda Monley

This Month’s Scripture
“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not per-ceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland” (Isaiah 43:18-19).
