DAV's vast, pervasive network of institutions owes its strength andsustenance to the age-old values and wisdom that are so reverently

enshrined in the Vedas. When Swami Dayanand gave the historic call 'Back

to the Vedas', he laid the foundation of a noble society founded on the

moralistic principles of Vedic wisdom. Thus was created "Arya Smaj",

Swami Dayanand's dream for the betterment and upliftment of society. And

when Mahatma Hans Raj carried forth the torch of Vedic light into the field of

education, DAV -- Dayanand Anglo-Vedic-institutions were created. DAV,

right from its point of existence, embodies the spirit of sagacity and sacrifice

that was so deely entrenched in the lives of the renowned stalwarts such as

Mahatma Hansraj and Lala Lajpat Rai. In my discourses, I often highlight

the strategic wisdom of the placement of the three letters D,A,V where

"Anglo" refers to Western philosopy and knowledge, and its position in the

middle signifies the wonderful balance that our institutions achieve, that is,

to remain rooted in the Vedic values revered by Swami Dayanand, while

imbibing the best of Western thought. For DAV, There is no limit to the

attainment of knowledge because our Vedas inspire us to delve into the soul

as well as seek awareness of all that the outer world has to offer. It is due to

this divinely powerful combination of the mind and the soul that DAV, with a

strength of nearly 800 institutions, has spread all over India as well as

    abroad..

    Fromthe Princpas DeskDear Students

It gives me immense pleasure to congratulate you on choosing

D.A.V. College, Sector 10, Chandigarh for admission and also to

    welcome you to the college.

'Students who get higher education are a privileged class in our

country, particularly those who have the opportunity of studying in

some outstanding institution as this college' These are the glowing

and the ever inspiring words about our beloved College spoken by

Shrimati Indira Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India, when she

    visited it in 1984.

Having been founded in 1958, when the city of Chandigarh was in its infancy, the college has grown

with the city, becoming an integral part of the region's socio-cultural milieu. The college belongs to

the family of the reputed D.A.V. institutions, founded by Mahatma Hans Raj, and inspired by thegreat visionary-Swami Dayanand Saraswati-the doyen of the Arya Samaj, who believed that, True

education consists in promoting knowledge, civilized manners, virtuous character, self-control and

other moral qualities and in dispelling ignorance. DAV stands for Dayanand Anglo-Vedic, a term

that is unique in its amalgamation of ancient heritage and modernity. "Dayanand" and "Vedic" are

the impetus for the DAV movement, connoting the richness of the Maharishi's value system and

the profundity of Vedic wisdom. Steadfastly balanced between the two is "Anglo" that refers to the

best of the western knowledge that is updated with the latest technology, yet which is well within

the parameters of our ancient vedic heritage. The branches of the tree of knowledge will spread far

and wide, yet it is the roots that will give strength and substance to the leaves fluttering merrily in

the breeze. We are to set and achieve highest standards in education as our sublime mission isman-making. DAV students get the best of the two worlds: they compete with the world for

optimum knowledge and opportunities, and simultaneously build a strong, noble character rooted

in Vedic values. The D.A.V. College, Chandigarh continues to focus on this holistic synthesis by

imparting to the students the best of new world humanistic, scientific and technical knowledge

with a sense of pride in their rich cultural heritage.

This college has had a distinguished history. As one of the foremost educational institutions, D.A.V.

College, Chandigarh has earned a commendable record of achievements in all fields. It is not for

nothing that students from all parts of the country and abroad vie with one another to find a seat in

this institution. During more than fifty years of its existence we have produced great

administrators, jurists, academicians, artists and sports persons of international repute. Even this

year we have achieved outstanding results in academic, sports and co-curricular activities. Our

faculty is making exceptional contribution in research in various disciplines and other out-reach

    programs.

I am sure when you join this college you will become a part of this glorious tradition of growth and

    excellence.

    God Bless You !

    Mission & Objectives

    D.A.V. College Chandigarh was

founded in 1958, when the city of

Chandigarh was in its infancy. Thecollege has grown with the city,

becoming an integral part of the

    region's socio-cultural milieu. The

college belongs to the family of the

    famous D.A.V. institutions, founded

by Mahatma Hans Raj, and inspired

by the great v is ionary-Swami

    Dayanand Saraswati-the doyen of the

    Arya Samaj, who believed that,"True

    education consists in promoting

    knowledge, civilized manners,

virtuous character, self-controland other moral qualities and in

    dispelling ignorance". He had

always fe l t that the sc ient i f ic

knowledge of the west needs to be

absorbed in the cultural milieu of

    India. The DAV movement, which

started in 1886, gives a practical

shape to the ideals of Swami

    Dayanand's educational philosophy

which aims to develop a modern

    scientif ic approach among the

    s t u d e n t s , c o u p l e d w i t h a n

understanding of their roots in the

    ancient Vedic Culture. The D.A.V

College, Chandigarh is trying to bring

about this synthesis by imparting to

the students the best ofnew worldhumanistic, scientific and technical

knowledge with the sense of history of

    their rich cultural heritage-the Anglo

and Vedic values. We work to achieve

    these broad objectives.

The college was built from scratch

with missionary zeal. Brick by brick,

the early principals and teachers atthe college put in super human efforts

to launch the college. And those

among the students who saw the

college come up, knew exactly, whatthe growth had entailed. They

experienced first hand, the self less

labour and love, and the sense of duty

and discipline, which had gone into

the making of the institution. It is this

that makes many of these old

    students, themselves occupying high

places, come back to the college for

    educating their sons and grand-sons,

and now even daughters and grand-

daughters. They believe that the skills

and values ingrained in them, which

helped them succeed in their lives,

have been acquired by them in this

    institution. They not only remember

their col lege for i ts academicexcellence, its committed faculty and

    dedicated principals, its ever growing

    impressive infrastructure and its star

    sportsmen.

    Distinctive Features

Every student enrolled with us is

    allowed perceptive freedom to excel

in his chosen field of endeavour and

interest. That is one reason, we

    believe, that has helped using

moulding career of some of the bestyoung men & women of this region.

Offering of maximum facilities to the

students so that they fulfil their

potential has been the hallmark of the

college. All incentives in the college,

be they in the form of special coaching

    or counselling, extra books, sports

equ ipment , fee concess ions ,

    stipends, scholarships, etc. have not

really to be applied for. They are theirs

for the deserving students in all fields

    of academic, extra curricular and

    National Institute of Educational

to declare the college as the Model

    College.

The infrastructure and studentsupport facilities available in the

college have enabled us to remain on

top in the region. Our students

continue to bag top positions in

    studies. We have successfully

    launched postgraduate programmes

    Sportsmen like the legendary Kapil

    Dev, Yuvraj Singh, Yograj, Dinesh

Mongia, Jeev Milkha Singh & Irina

Brar. This tradition is alive and kicking

    even today. Young scholars, almost

every year, inspired and fired by

    g l o w i n g e x a m p l e s o f t h e i r

predecessors do their best to maintain

the high levels of excellence that are

    very rarely achieved elsewhere.

When they come here success is only

a sacred word in their prayers, whenthey leave success is actually a solid

weapon in their hands. With this

weapon they proceed to win all battles

    of life.

Our achievements have enabled us to

play host to four Vice-Presidents, one

    Prime Minister, several Union

    Ministers, Governors, Chief Ministers,

    Great religious Leaders and other

    dignitaries. They have graced our

functions on many occasions andblessed and motivated the students

    and staff.

Social CommitmentA practical demonstration of our

students' attitude can be seen in the

concern they develop for their country

    and their community. They actively

imbibe the spirit of social service and

many of them join the armed forces.

To the martyrs from our college, we

    have dedicated our Administrative

Block and named it 'Shaurya Bhavan'.

The idea of service to the community

and the nation is reinforced through

the homage that is paid to the martyrs

at their memorial in the college before

the start of any function by all

    dignitaries visiting the college from

time to time. Our students involve

    themselves in programmes like Blood

    Donation, Drug-deaddiction, AIDS

    awareness, Pulse Polio Campaign

and service to the blind, etc. We have

also joined a project to give shelter to

street children. We have been holding

    computer literacy classes for senior

citizens. The training is given free of

cost. More than 500 senior citizens

    have benefitted so far.

    Teaching/ Learning

and EvaluationThe college enjoys its enviable

posi t ion because of ef fect ive

    teaching-learning and evaluation

    processes. Students are provided

appropriate counselling at the time of

admission and selected on the basis

    of their past academic performance

    after an interview. Their knowledge,

skills and attendance in class are

regularly monitored and their parentsare kept posted with their wards'

    performance. A system of continuous

    assessment of students has been

    introduced. Students are encouraged

to develop one or the other interest,

hobby, beyond their studies and their

    participation in college activities is

    rewarded accordingly.

The courses set by the University are

covered intensively with the help of all

available teaching aids in the college.
