Welcome back to Term 4. I hope all students have returned

refreshed for a final burst of effort for the year. Our staff

have been working meticulously throughout the last few

weeks marking and preparing the submissions for our

seniors. These submissions will be verified at regional

QCAA meetings on the third Monday of this term and at

State Meetings later in the year. Year 12 students have a

relatively short term, but significant movement both up and

down can still occur and our seniors should be mindful that

their results are not locked in as yet.

It is really important that our students understand the need to finish well. This is in

every regard. The Year 12’s in particular need to maximise their results, but also

enjoy their last days at the College in a way in which they will be respected and

remembered fondly for being the fine young people that they are.

If Year 12 students have not registered for QTAC and are considering tertiary study

next year, they should do so as soon as possible. I would also encourage any student

who has not seen Mrs Duthler about careers and tertiary courses already, to please

see her as soon as possible this term.

Eisteddfod

The Mackay Eisteddfod is in its second week with one week to go. Congratulations

to our College groups and soloists who have performed and represented the College.

A special thank you to students who volunteered and assisted with

back stage.

New Staff Welcome

At the beginning of Term 4, we welcomed Mr Marcus McConnell

to the St Patrick’s community. Marcus is a past St Patrick’s student

and is an exceptional musician. Marcus will be taking Mrs Sarah

Rozekran’s position whilst she is on maternity leave. We would

like to take this opportunity to welcome Marcus back to St Pat’s.

Aerospace Gateways Schools Direct Entry

We have recently been advised by the University of

Queensland that Year 12 student Brodie Rogers has been

successful in gaining direct entry to the University of

Queensland through the Aerospace Gateways School Direct

Entry Scheme. This scheme has provided opportunities to

students since 2007 with the faculty of Engineering,

Architecture and Information Technology working in

partnership with Aerospace Gateways Schools to encourage

high achieving students to progress to related tertiary studies.

Congratulations Brodie!

Industry Placement and Work Experience

Over the last two weeks of Term 3 and during the holiday period we had more than one hundred students access industry

placement or work experience. The reports from students, parents and employers have been overwhelmingly positive. I

would like to thank Mr Korneliussen and Mrs Browne who organised the students from the college end and all staff involved

in workplace visits and supervision of afterhours exams. I am sure that many students will make better career choices based

on this experience.

Year 12 Retreat

On Thursday and Friday last week, Year 12 students participated in their retreat. We were once again fortunate to have the

services of Mr Michael Fitzpatrick who leads the student body through some valuable exercises. The focus of the retreat was

on relationships and transitioning to the next stage of their life. The students have given overwhelmingly positive feedback

from these retreat days.

Year 11 Camp

On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday last week, the Year 11 group attended their

Leadership camp and retreat at Coolwaters Holiday Village in Yeppoon. This was

an opportunity for religious development of a personal identity for students, as

well as to develop their leadership qualities. Students utilised the facilities of the

Village while interacting with staff. I would like to thank and staff who volunteered

their time to help with the supervision at the camp. A special mention to Mrs

Erika Brauer for her organisation of the camp, Mr Brendon Brauer for his

assistance, Mr Stephen Mortimer for organising our presenter Mr Az Hamilton,

as well as organising sessions for the students to engage in and Mr Dean Andric

for his presentation.

Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Foundation

(QATSIF)

On Wednesday, five students accompanied myself to the QATSIF Scholarship

Graduation which was held at Central Queensland University. The graduating

students are: Xoelene Afflick, Orannia Ninness, Monique Best, Elleni Williams,

Caleb Sinn, Natasha Derdziak, Arielle Taylor, Georgia Sellings and Makhaya

Quakawoot. This was the first time that the event was held with all regional schools

attending.

Borobi Boogie—Have you got the moves? The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) mascot Borobi is inviting all schools to dance with him.

Schools can learn the Borobi Boogie steps and share their very own boogie online. This is a great way to experience the

Games and unleash creativity at your school while getting active. All schools and students will receive a Borobi Award

certificate, with participating Queensland schools also going into the draw to receive a GC2018 Get into the Games sports

pack.

The Borobi Boogie was developed by the Department of Education and Training in collaboration with the Gold Coast 2018

Commonwealth Games Corporation. The dance is part of the Embracing 2018 Legacy Program, which aims to bring lasting

benefits before, during and after GC2018.

Find out more at GC2018 Embrace Learning and get in quick—Borobi Boogie closes on 1 December 2017.

Triple P – Positive Parenting Program

A stress-free end of 2017 is possible with positive parenting

Get on the front-foot and set up your family for a successful end to 2017! Triple P has the positive parenting strategies to

help you and your kids cope with the end of year rush and exams. It can also help your family have its best school holidays

yet – think days filled with well-behaved and happy kids and teens.

Triple P has already helped more than 95,000 Queensland parents, carers and grandparents, and it’s still FREE. You can do it

Next Step 2016

The Next Step survey, undertaken by the Queensland Government, targets all students who completed Year 12 and gained

a Senior Statement in 2016. Of the 258 students who completed Year 12 in 2016, the government statistician received

responses from 227 of them (88%).

St Patrick’s Family

During the September holidays, St Patrick’s College entered a team in the Champion Schools Basketball Competition

in Brisbane. The boys played in the second division and performed very well picking up a bronze medal for their

efforts. What a fantastic performance from the team. Thank you to coach Mr Jamiey Doevendans, manager/trainer

Mr Martin Hollis and other helpers who assisted this team.

Congratulations to member of the first VII netball team who travelled to the Gold Coast recently to compete in the

State Finals of the Vicki Wilson Cup. A great effort girls placing 17th in the competition.

Thank you to the students who represented the College at the 2017 Light the Night walk which raises money for

the Leukemia Foundation. A wonderful community effort from the students and a special thank you to Holly Van

Wyk Smith for organising this group.

National Rosary for Australia

Friday the 13 October is the 100 year anniversary of the sixth and final appearance of Mary for the

children of Fatima, Portugal. These appearances at Fatima are a significant event in the history of the

Catholic Church. They should be recognised as part of the rich story of faith which began with Jesus

and continues today. During this appearance, Mary once again asked the children to continue saying

the Holy Rosary, hence the National Rosary Day to celebrate this occasion.

The appearance of Mary is further significant in that it emphasises the relationship Mary has with us

and God. The example set by Mary as the mother of Jesus is the inspiration for the Marist orders

which is part of the history of St Patrick’s College.

Saint Vincent de Paul Appeal

Traditionally, during the advent period, the students and staff of the College support the Saint Vincent de Paul (SVDP) appeal

by donating food to assist people in need. This year, I would like to assist one particular part of the SVDP work in the Mackay

area, the housing program.

The SVDP Housing program in Mackay, assists people to find affordable accommodation. This program provides housing

options for individuals and families whom would otherwise be unable to afford market rental fees. Whilst this program assists

people to find accommodation, it does not have the resources to provide many of the essentials needed to set up a

comfortable home. Usually a large part of the weekly grocery bill is taken up with toiletries, cleaning products and items

which are used around the home. Our appeal will focus upon these essentials, which include cleaning products, Linen etc.

The aim is to provide a welcome gift for a new residence to help create a comfortable home. I would encourage you to

consider throwing one of these items in your shopping basket each week to donate to the appeal.

Year 11 Camp (Positive Identity, Servant Leadership & Shared Community)

In contrast to the cyclonic weather conditions that cancelled the original Year 11 Induction camp, last

week’s Year 11 Retreat was conducted in warm, humid conditions which was ideal for the setting at

Coolwaters Resort. 200 students and 24 teachers made their way down to Coolwaters, Yeppoon

Discovery Park last week to participate in retreat activities, with a focus on establishing a positive identity,

servant leadership and developing a shared community. Students were also provided with opportunities

to participate in fun-filled activities including stand up paddle boarding, water slides, fishing, beach walking,

tennis etc. All students departed from the College at the early hour of 7:00 am, before arriving at

Coolwaters in time for lunch, which involved making their own hamburgers.

Students were soon checked into their rooms and an introductory retreat session followed, with a focus on students

discovering more about themselves and their peers in breakout groups. This was followed by free time activities which the

students clearly enjoyed.

Following dinner in the dining hall, Mr Az Hamilton was introduced to the group, who was the guest presenter for the retreat.

Az is a motivational speaker from Brisbane who had many stories to share from his life experiences, including the role that

God has played and it was very clear that all students were engaged in his presentations that continued throughout the

evening and during Thursday. Mr Hamilton was also supported by Mr Mortimer and Mr Andric who also provided engaging

presentations with a focus on developing an understanding of servant leadership and becoming a more active member of the

St Patrick’s College community.

The Year 11 Retreat camp provided our Year 11 cohort with a clear understanding of what we are about at St Patrick’s and

what makes us a strong community. It was very satisfying to witness positive relationships being formed between students

and their peers and between staff and students. Despite our original camp to Daydream Island being cancelled, Mrs Erika

Brauer was able to provide our students with a memorable experience at Coolwaters, whereby the needs of all of our

students was carefully considered to provide an engaging and enjoyable program.

I would like to acknowledge the enormous amount of work that Mrs Erika Brauer has put in this year to organise not one,

but two camps. She was well supported by the St Patrick’s College office staff. I would also like to acknowledge Mr Hamilton,

Mr Mortimer and Mr Andric for their efforts in preparing engaging presentations for the students over the two days of the

retreat. Finally, thank you to the staff who attended the camp, volunteering their time to provide this experience for our

students. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

This month on SchoolTV - Exam Jitters

“Balance is key when it comes to getting the most out of the brain. Students need to take responsibility for

when to study and when to socialise.” (Dr Michael Carr-Gregg)

Every year, more and more emphasis is placed on achieving good results in exams causing many students to feel an

extraordinary amount of pressure and having unrealistic expectations. This month on SchoolTV, parents will find advice on

how to help students cope with the pressure and how students can work smarter to achieve the results they desire.

Exams are like a game. Once you know how to play the game, your chances of achieving great results rapidly increase. Parents

can learn how to assist their kids to maintain perspective and keep their sanity intact during exam time.

Diet, exercise and sleep all play an important part in helping a student balance a busy schedule and study smarter. Keeping

stress levels to a minimum and reducing anxiety can be easily achieved through careful planning and having a supportive

environment.

We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this month’s edition and we always welcome your feedback.

If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information. Here is the link to

Our St Patrick’s College first VII netball team recently competed at the state finals of the Vicki Wilson

Cup. The girls played exceptionally well to earn their place in the final series, after wins in the local

Mackay and Capricornia finals. Despite only having one player on the bench for the entire weekend and

being in a strong pool the girls performed admirably. Two other teams in our pool finished in the top

five and as such, our games on Saturday were challenging. After four tough games on Saturday, many of

the team were playing through pain on the last day. The girls rose to the occasion and went undefeated

on the final day ending up 17th out of the 320 teams who had entered state wide.

All games were played at the brand new Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre, built next to Metricon Stadium. The venue

will be one of several stadiums used for the 2018 Commonwealth Games and the girls were excited to share the experience

of playing at such state of the art facilities. The team of Kylah Bailey, Lois Beckingham, Lauren Bella, Monique Best, Chloe

Brant, Kelisha Day, Zoe McIntyre and Elleni Williams are to be congratulated on the professional way in which you

represented the College over the entire weekend. I would also like to thank Miss Susan De Haas who managed the team and

the small group of parents and friends who came down to the Gold Coast to support us over the weekend.

On Wednesday, the Year 11 Aerospace Studies students visited the Mackay Airport. Chrisair Aircraft

Maintenance welcomed the students and showed them the planes under maintenance, as well as the

tools and equipment used to repair the aircraft.

The Mackay Airport Fire Department was the next stop where students were shown how the runway

is overseen and how they are ‘ready for action’ in an emergency in terms of aircraft movements. The

Control Tower was next to be visited and students were very impressed with the instruments and

technology used with the traffic control process. A ‘behind the scenes’ look at the baggage handling area

and a tour of the runway were also part of the excursion.

We would like to thank the Mackay Airport and Chrisair Aircraft Maintenance for allowing the offering the students the

wonderful exposure to the aviation industry.

2017 Queensland Youth Shakespeare Festival

Congratulations to Angela Muddle and Joshua Collins who have travelled

to Brisbane today for the finals of the 2017 Queensland Youth Shakespeare

Festival. Tristan Niemi was also selected, however was unable to attend

due to commitments in Mackay. Angela and Joshua will be competing in

the duologue section and will be performing an adaptation of Shakespeare’s

“Midsummer Night’s Dream”.

The Festival provides a unique opportunity for students across Queensland to focus their

artistic abilities in an all-inclusive creative competition celebrating the works of William

Shakespeare and is presented by shake & stir theatre co.

Year 11 student Kiralee Welsh has entered the only national teenage fashion design competition in

Australia and has been successful in progressing through to the National finals which are to be held in

Perth on the 21 October 2017.

Kiralee designed and made a Casual Wear entry and an Environment and Society entry. In September

she took the two entries to the State Final, placing runner-up with both in each respective category.

Caitlin Neundorf (Year 11) accompanied Kiralee and modelled the Casual wear entry and will travel with

Kiralee to the National Finals next week.

This is the third year that Kiralee has entered this competition. In 2016, Kiralee won the Casual Wear and Wearable Art

categories and was awarded the AATFA (Apex Australia Teenage Fashion Awards) Young Australian Designer of the Year.

Congratulations and best wishes for the National Finals next week!

We’re asking parents to help identify Australia’s most outstanding teachers and principals! Please nominate the outstanding principals and teachers you know, so they can get the recognition they deserve.

Nominations for the 2018 Commonwealth Bank Teaching Awards are open until October 12. These prestigious Awards have been created by Schools Plus and the Commonwealth Bank to celebrate and reward excellence in teaching and school leadership.

$45,000 Teaching Fellowship In 2018, 12 outstanding educators will receive a $45,000 Teaching Fellowship, comprising $30,000 for a project at the Fellow’s school, $10,000 for professional development and a $5,000 study tour to a high-performing education system. The Awards are open to teachers and school leaders from all Australian schools across the Government, Catholic and Independent sectors. Visit teachingawards.com.au for more information or to nominate a great teacher or principal.

This is a great opportunity to acknowledge the inspiring work that goes on in Australian schools!
