Hello everyone
With only 7 school days remaining prior to the mid-semester break, I take this oppor-
tunity to thank the school community for their support during our Principal, Mike’s
absence. It has been a privilege to represent the school over the past 5 weeks as the
Acting Principal.
May I express my gratitude to all of the families who attended last week’s meeting to
form the Family Cultural Awareness Group as well as those parents who sent their apologies. It was
absolutely fantastic to share the room with such a wealth of knowledge and discuss in particular po-
tential elements of celebration for the school’s NAIDOC week which will be held during week 3 next
term commencing on July 29. A sub-committee was formed during this meeting also and all families
are invited to attend this meeting which will be held at 1:30pm this Thursday (June 20) in the library.
This meeting will be shared with our Parent community and Indigenous Leaders of the Future and
their support teachers. I look forward to seeing all interested family members at this meeting on
Thursday!
Next week will see the sharing of student report cards. All students will be handed their report cards
on Monday afternoon June 24. If any students are absent for the duration of the final week of term –
their report cards will be sent home. Please contact the school administration if you have any ques-
tions regarding the distribution of report cards.
With report cards being distributed next week, our school would like to meet with our families early
next term for our next round of Parent-Teacher-Student interviews. The set date for our semester 1
interviews will be Tuesday, July 23. More information with booking forms will be shared with all Par-
ents and Carers after the school holiday period.
Next Monday’s senior assembly June 24, has been extended to an invitation for the whole school and
school community. This assembly will commence at 1:50pm and will share some important cultural
celebrations from our Congolese and Rwandan families – Independence Day. Please feel free to join
us at this assembly where our students with a Congolese or Rwandan background will share some
celebratory activities on the assembly stage in the senior hall.
Finally, please have a wonderful, safe holiday break with your children and family! During the holiday
period, the Meriam Buai Torres Strait Islander Corporation Cairns will be holding their General
Meeting. Please see the invitation in this newsletter for more information. I look forward to seeing all
our students and families return after the school holidays on Monday, July 15 after an excellent
break!
Until next time…….Denny

Year 5 teachers Mr Thomas and Mrs Nona were invited to the Microsoft Headquarters in Sydney last week to join the Innovative Teachers Acade-my. They brought back the latest educational tech-nologies, which are already working wonders in classrooms. Our Congolese students are now trans-lating text into Swahili, and students are using digital picture prompts and colour labels to learn sentence structure. New 3D paint software allows students to create 3D images which they can combine with real life video…….Mr Thomas - 5T

As we reach the mid-way point of the season our Cairns West Edge Hill Tigers team are steadily making progress.
We recently played two games over the weekend, playing two of the top four teams. I was proud to say as the coach that we were very competitive and just ran out of puff in the second half. We currently sit in 7th position out of 10 teams in the competition which is a fantastic result consid-ering our team has only been together for a few months and most of our boys have never played an official game before.
Most importantly, our boys are having a heaps of fun each week and really gelling as friends.
More updates soon…….Mr L’Orange soccer coach
