Antiochus had to put away his first wife, Laodice, to marry Berenice. Ptolemy II died and Antiochus then divorced Berenice to take back his first wife Laodice. Berenice poisoned Antiochus. Then Laodice poisoned Berenice and her children and her son the crown prince. Ptolemy III, Berenice’s brother, then invaded the Northern Kingdom.

Dan 11:7 But out of a branch of her roots shall one stand up in his estate, which shall come with an army, and shall enter into the fortress of the king of the north (Seleucia II), and shall deal against them, and shall prevail: 8 And shall also carry captives into Egypt their gods, with their princes, and with their precious vessels of silver and of gold; and he shall continue more years than the king of the north.

Ptolemy III Berenice’s brother invaded the Kingdom of the North, to stand up in his estate, Berenice’s, son the crown prince.

Dan 11:9 So the king of the south (Ptolemy III) shall come into his kingdom, and shall return into his own land.

Dan 11:10 But his (King of the North) sons (Seleucus Callinicus) (Antiochus III) shall be stirred up, and shall assemble a multitude of great forces: and one (Antiochus III) shall certainly come, and overflow, and pass through: then shall he return, and be stirred up, even to his (Ptolemy IV’s) fortress (Egypt). 11 And the king of the south (Ptolemy IV) shall be moved with choler, and shall come forth and fight with him,(Antiochus III) even with the king of the north: and he shall set forth a great multitude; but the multitude shall be given into his hand. 12 And when he hath taken away the multitude, his heart shall be lifted up; and he shall cast down many ten thousands: but he shall not be strengthened by it. Seleucus Callinicus was poisoned.

Dan 11:13 For the king of the north (Antiochus III) shall return, and shall set forth a multitude greater than the former, and shall certainly come after certain years with a great army and with much riches. 14 And in those times there shall many stand up against the king of the south (Ptolemy V): also the robbers (Egyptians) of thy people (Judah) shall exalt themselves to establish the vision (Their desire to control Jerusalem and Judah); but they shall fall. 15 So the king of the north (Antiochus III) shall come, and cast up a mount, and take the most fenced cities: and the arms of the south (Ptolemy V) shall not withstand, neither his chosen people, neither shall there be any strength to withstand.

A regrouping to take back Syria. Antiochus III allies with Philip of Macedonia, Greece. Will also take Judah and Jerusalem.

Dan 11:16 But he (Antiochus III) that cometh against him (Ptolemy V) shall do according to his own will, and none shall stand before him: and he shall stand in the glorious land, (Israel) which by his hand shall be consumed. 17 He shall also set his face to enter with the strength of his whole kingdom, and upright ones with him; thus shall he do: and he shall give him (PtolemyV) the daughter of women,(Antiochus III’s daughter Cleopatra) corrupting her: but she shall not stand on his side, neither be for him.

The story keeps going back to Israel, God’s chosen people.Cleopatra was loyal to Ptolemy V and betrayed her father.When Ptolemy V died, Cleopatra became the first sovereign Ptolemaic queen, and the Egyptians called her “Cleopatra the Syrian.”

Dan 11:18 After this shall he (Antiochus III) turn his face unto the isles, (Greece/ Rome islands) and shall take many: but a prince for his own behalf (Roman general) shall cause the reproach offered by him to cease; without his own reproach he shall cause it to turn upon him. 19 Then he shall turn his face toward the fort of his own land (King of the North Syria or the Seleucid empire): but he shall stumble and fall, and not be found. (Antiochus III Dies and Seleucus IV His son becomes King of North) 20 Then shall stand up in his estate a raiser of taxes in the glory of the kingdom: but within few days he shall be destroyed, neither in anger, nor in battle.Seleucus IV imposed high taxes. Dan 11:21 And in his (Heliodorus) estate shall stand up a vile person, (Antiochus IV Ephiphanes) to whom they (Kingdom of the North) shall not give the honour of the kingdom: but he shall come in peaceably, and obtain the kingdom by flatteries.

Antiochus Epiphanes killed Heliodorus, being the brother of Seleucus IV, and assumed the kingdom of the North.

He flattered Eumenes, king of Pergamus, and Attalus his brother, and got their assistance. He flattered the Romans, and sent ambassadors to court their favour, and pay them the arrears of the tribute. He flattered the Syrians, and gained their concurrence; and as he flattered the Syrians, so they flattered him, giving him the epithet of Epiphanes- the Illustrious.

Dan 11:22 And with the arms of a flood shall they be overflown from before him, and shall be broken; yea, also the prince of the covenant. (High Priest of Israel)23 And after the league made with him he shall work deceitfully: for he shall come up, and shall become strong with a small people. (He came to power unpopular and used flatteries.)

Contrast between the Lord Jesus Christ and Antichrist1. Christ is the subject of Old Testament Prophecy: so is the Antichrist2.
