Daniel 11Daniel 11:1 Also I in the first year of Darius the Mede, even I, stood to confirm and to strengthen him.

Daniel 9:20 And when he came to the den, he cried with a lamentable voice unto Daniel: and the king spake and said to Daniel, O Daniel, servant of the living God, is thy God, whom thou servest continually, able to deliver thee from the lions?

Ezra 4:1 Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the LORD God of Israel;2 Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assur, which brought us up hither.2 Kinga 17:24 And the king of Assyria brought men from Babylon, and from Cuthah, and from Ava, and from Hamath, and from Sepharvaim, and placed them in the cities of Samaria instead of the children of Israel: and they possessed Samaria, and dwelt in the cities thereof.

2 Kings 17:25 And so it was at the beginning of their dwelling there, that they feared not the LORD: therefore the LORD sent lions among them, which slew some of them.26 Wherefore they spake to the king of Assyria, saying, The nations which thou hast removed, and placed in the cities of Samaria, know not the manner of the God of the land: therefore he hath sent lions among them, and, behold, they slay them, because they know not the manner of the God of the land. (Romans 1:18-22)27 Then the king of Assyria commanded, saying, Carry thither one of the priests whom ye brought from thence; and let them go and dwell there, and let him teach them the manner of the God of the land. Why is this priest in Captivity?

Who are the Adversaries?

2 Kings 17:28 Then one of the priests whom they had carried away from Samaria came and dwelt in Bethel, and taught them how they should fear the LORD.29 Howbeit every nation made gods of their own, and put them in the houses of the high places which the Samaritans had made, every nation in their cities wherein they dwelt.30 And the men of Babylon made Succothbenoth, and the men of Cuth made Nergal, and the men of Hamath made Ashima, 31 And the Avites made Nibhaz and Tartak, and the Sepharvites burnt their children in fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of Sepharvaim. 32 So they feared the LORD, and made unto themselves of the lowest of them priests of the high places, which sacrificed for them in the houses of the high places.

In my opinion, you have the blind leading the blind.

2 Kings 17:33 They feared the LORD, and served their own gods, after the manner of the nations whom they carried away from thence.34 Unto this day they do after the former manners: they fear not the LORD, neither do they after their statutes, or after their ordinances, or after the law and commandment which the LORD commanded the children of Jacob, whom he named Israel;35 With whom the LORD had made a covenant, and charged them, saying, Ye shall not fear other gods, nor bow yourselves to them, nor serve them, nor sacrifice to them:

This sounds like the rhetoric of today’s ecumenical, anything goes, have it your own way, compromising religion of today, that does not believe in separation!

Their battle cry is tolerance with a pseudo love

Ezra 4:3 But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the LORD God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.4 Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,5 And hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.

What is our response to this compromising crowd of today?

What is this crowd of compromisers doing to our work today?

Page 7: Daniel 11 Darius the Mede to confirm and to strengthen him Daniel 11:1 Also I in the first year of Darius the Mede, even I, stood to confirm and to strengthen

Our battle cry ought to be Separation, Holiness, Godliness, and touch not the unclean thing.

2 Cor 6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? 15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? 16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,

Herodotus, who lived in that time, informs us that Xerxes’ army amounted to five millions, two hundred and eighty-three thousand, two hundred and twenty men. Besides these, the Carthaginians furnished him with an army of three hundred thousand men, and a fleet of two hundred ships. He led an army against the Greeks of eight hundred thousand men, and twelve hundred and seven ships, with three banks of rowers each. As he marched along, he obliged all the people of the countries through which he passed to join him.

Xerxes, who invaded Greece 483-480 BC. After Xerxes overthrew at Salamis 480, Persia is viewed as politically dead, though Persia had an existence until Alexzander the Great. Dan 11:2…he shall stir up all against the realm of Grecia.

Dan 8:8 Therefore the he goat waxed very great: and when he was strong, the great horn was broken; and for it came up four notable ones toward the four winds of heaven.

Dan 8:22 Now that being broken, whereas four stood up for it, four kingdoms shall stand up out of the nation, but not in his power.

Daniel 11:5 And the king of the south shall be strong, and one of his princes; and he shall be strong above him, and have dominion; his dominion shall be a great dominion.

KING OF THE SOUTH Ptolemy I Thru Ptolemy XV the Ptolemaic Empire 305-30BC South of Judah.

Seleucus fled to Egypt and served under Ptolemy for a few years having been driven from Babylon by Antigonus another one of Alexander’s generals. Seleucus raised an army and took Gaza Babylon, Syria, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Eastern Turkey and this area of the world became known as the Seleucid Empire. “The king of the North” North of Egypt and Judah.

Dan 11:6 And in the end of years they shall join themselves together; for the king’s daughter of the south shall come to the king of the north to make an agreement: but she shall not retain the power of the arm; neither shall he stand, nor his arm: but she shall be given up, and they that brought her, and he that begat her, and he that strengthened her in these times.

Marriage alliance between Berenice daughter of Ptolemy II and Antiochus the successor of Seleucus . (The Syrian or the Seleucid empire)

Antiochus tried to take territory away from Ptolemy II. A Bloody war was being fought.

Dan 11:6 And in the end of years they shall join themselves together; for the king’s daughter of the south shall come to the king of the north to make an agreement: but she (Berenice) shall not retain the power of the arm; neither shall he (Antiochus) stand, nor his arm: but she (Berenice) shall be given up, and they (Egyptian women servants) that brought her, and he (Ptolemy II) that begat her (Berenice), and he (Berenice’s son) that strengthened her (Berenice) in these times.

Antiochus had to put away his first wife, Laodice, to marry Berenice. Ptolemy II died and Antiochus then divorced Berenice to take back his first wife Laodice. Berenice poisoned Antiochus. Then Laodice poisoned Berenice and her children and her son the crown prince. Ptolemy III, Berenice’s brother, then invaded the Northern Kingdom.

Dan 11:7 But out of a branch of her roots shall one stand up in his estate, which shall come with an army, and shall enter into the fortress of the king of the north (Seleucia II), and shall deal against them, and shall prevail: 8 And shall also carry captives into Egypt their gods, with their princes, and with their precious vessels of silver and of gold; and he shall continue more years than the king of the north.

Ptolemy III Berenice’s brother invaded the Kingdom of the North, to stand up in his estate, Berenice’s, son the crown prince.

Dan 11:9 So the king of the south (Ptolemy III) shall come into his kingdom, and shall return into his own land.

Dan 11:10 But his (King of the North) sons (Seleucus Callinicus) (Antiochus III) shall be stirred up, and shall assemble a multitude of great forces: and one (Antiochus III) shall certainly come, and overflow, and pass through: then shall he return, and be stirred up, even to his (Ptolemy IV’s) fortress (Egypt). 11 And the king of the south (Ptolemy IV) shall be moved with choler, and shall come forth and fight with him,(Antiochus III) even with the king of the north: and he shall set forth a great multitude; but the multitude shall be given into his hand. 12 And when he hath taken away the multitude, his heart shall be lifted up; and he shall cast down many ten thousands: but he shall not be strengthened by it. (Egypt won)

Seleucus Callinicus was poisoned.

Dan 11:13 For the king of the north (Antiochus III) shall return, and shall set forth a multitude greater than the former, and shall certainly come after certain years with a great army and with much riches. 14 And in those times there shall many stand up against the king of the south (Ptolemy V): also the robbers (Egyptians) of thy people (Judah) shall exalt themselves to establish the vision (Their desire to control Jerusalem and Judah); but they shall fall. 15 So the king of the north (Antiochus III) shall come, and cast up a mount, and take the most fenced cities: and the arms of the south (Ptolemy V) shall not withstand, neither his chosen people, neither shall there be any strength to withstand.

A regrouping to take back Syria. Antiochus III allies with Philip of Macedonia, Greece. Will also take Judah and Jerusalem.

Dan 11:16 But he (Antiochus III) that cometh against him (Ptolemy V) shall do according to his own will, and none shall stand before him: and he shall stand in the glorious land, (Israel) which by his hand shall be consumed. 17 He shall also set his face to enter with the strength of his whole kingdom, and upright ones with him; thus shall he do: and he shall give him (PtolemyV) the daughter of women,(Antiochus III’s daughter Cleopatra) corrupting her: but she shall not stand on his side, neither be for him.

The story keeps going back to Israel, God’s chosen people.Cleopatra was loyal to Ptolemy V and betrayed her father. When Ptolemy V died, Cleopatra became the first sovereign Ptolemaic queen, and the Egyptians called her “Cleopatra the Syrian.”

Dan 11:18 After this shall he (Antiochus III) turn his face unto the isles, (Greece/ Rome islands) and shall take many: but a prince for his own behalf (Roman general) shall cause the reproach offered by him to cease; without his own reproach he shall cause it to turn upon him. 19 Then he shall turn his face toward the fort of his own land (King of the North Syria or the Seleucid empire): but he shall stumble and fall, and not be found. (Antiochus III Dies and Seleucus IV His son becomes King of North) 20 Then shall stand up in his estate a raiser of taxes in the glory of the kingdom: but within few days he shall be destroyed, neither in anger, nor in battle.Seleucus IV imposed high taxes. The Kingdom of the North and Israel paid tribute taxes to the Romans. He sent Heliodorus to Jerusalem to get the temple treasure. Heliodorus then assassinated Seleucus IV and took the Kingdom.

Dan 11:21 And in his (Heliodorus) estate shall stand up a vile person, (Antiochus IV Ephiphanes) to whom they (Kingdom of the North) shall not give the honour of the kingdom: but he shall come in peaceably, and obtain the kingdom by flatteries.

Antiochus Epiphanes killed Heliodorus, being the brother of Seleucus IV, and assumed the kingdom of the North.

He flattered Eumenes, king of Pergamus, and Attalus his brother, and got their assistance. He flattered the Romans, and sent ambassadors to court their favour, and pay them the arrears of the tribute. He flattered the Syrians, and gained their concurrence; and as he flattered the Syrians, so they flattered him, giving him the epithet of Epiphanes- the Illustrious.

Dan 11:22 And with the arms of a flood shall they be overflown from before him, and shall be broken; yea, also the prince of the covenant. (High Priest of Israel)23 And after the league made with him he shall work deceitfully: for he shall come up, and shall become strong with a small people. (He came to power unpopular and used flatteries.)

This was Onias, the high priest, whom he removed, and put Jason in his place, who had given him a great sum of money; and then put wicked Menelaus in his room, who had offered him a larger sum. Thus he acted deceitfully in the league made with Jason.

Dan 11:24 He shall enter peaceably even upon the fattest places of the province; and he shall do that which his fathers have not done, nor his fathers’ fathers; he shall scatter among them the prey, and spoil, and riches: yea, and he shall forecast his devices against the strong holds, even for a time.

1Macc 3:30, that "in the liberal giving of gifts he abounded above all the kings that went before him."

Antiochus took possession of Pelusium, the key of Egypt; he seized upon Memphis, and he then laid siege to Alexandria.

Dan 11:25 And he shall stir up his power and his courage against the king of the south with a great army; and the king of the south shall be stirred up to battle with a very great and mighty army; but he shall not stand: for they (Vs 26 They that ate at Antiochus’ table) shall forecast devices against him.

(Not successful as his first two invasions)30 For the ships of Chittim (Gen 10:4 Isles of Mediterranean including Rome,Greece Islands etc:)shall come against him: therefore he shall be grieved, and return, and have indignation against the holy covenant: so shall he do; he shall even return, and have intelligence with them that forsake the holy covenant.

Have indignation against the holy covenant] For he vented his rage against the Jews; and he sent his general, Apollonius, with twenty-two thousand men against Jerusalem, plundered and set fire to the city, pulled down the houses round about it, slew much of the people, and built a castle on an eminence that commanded the temple, and slew multitudes of the poor people who had come up to worship, polluted every place, so that the temple service was totally abandoned, and all the people fled from the city. And when he returned to Antioch he published a decree that all should conform to the Grecian worship; and the Jewish worship was totally abrogated, and the temple itself consecrated to Jupiter Olympius. How great must the wickedness of the people have been when God could tolerate this!

1Ma 1:11 In those days lawless men came forth from Israel, and misled many, saying, "Let us go and make a covenant with the Gentiles round about us, for since we separated from them many evils have come upon us.“ 12This proposal pleased them,13 and some of the people eagerly went to the king. He authorized them to observe the ordinances of the Gentiles.14 So they built a gymnasium in Jerusalem, according to Gentile custom,15 and removed the marks of circumcision, and abandoned the holy covenant. They joined with the Gentiles and sold themselves to do evil.

Dan 11:30…..he shall even return, and have intelligence with them that forsake the holy covenant.

1 Macc 1:29 And after two years fully expired the king sent his chief collector of tribute unto the cities of Juda, who came unto Jerusalem with a great multitude,30 And spake peaceable words unto them, but all was deceit: for when they had given him credence, he fell suddenly upon the city, and smote it very sore, and destroyed much people of Israel. 31 And when he had taken the spoils of the city, he set it on fire, and pulled down the houses and walls thereof on every side.32 But the women and children took they captive, and possessed the cattle. 41 Moreover king Antiochus wrote to his whole kingdom, that all should be one people,42 And every one should leave his laws: so all the heathen agreed according to the commandment of the king.43 Yea, many also of the Israelites consented to his religion, and sacrificed unto idols, and profaned the sabbath.
