Four characters in search of a victory

By Barry RigalWhen you’ve been eliminated from the Blue

Ribbon Pairs, it’s hard to get too worked up about aknockout match. We duly got knocked out. Butalong the way, the following gem appeared.

king and the ♥10 switch, declarer can succeed if hereads the position perfectly.

He wins the ♥A, unblocks the ♣A and runs the♦Q, pitching dummy’s heart. Back comes the ♥9and you ruff, ruff a club and cash the ♦J, pitching aclub from dummy. Now you ruff a heart in dummyand East must overruff to produce this ending, inwhich he has four losing options.

East can lead a high trump, in which case youwin on the table and can crossruff, versus a lowtrump where you win the ♠8, ruff a club, ruff aheart and claim.

Or he can play a club which you ruff and drawtrumps ending in dummy. His final option is to givea ruff and discard by playing a diamond. You ruff indummy and pitch your heart, cash the ♠A and ruffa club back to your hand to draw the last trump.

Super defenseRick Logan of Diamondhead MS, playing in

the Wednesday Swiss Teams, found a fine defenseas West on this deal.

(1) 22 or 23 high card points.(2) Puppet Stayman.(3) One or two four-card majors.(4) “I have four hearts.”(5) “I have spades, not hearts.”From the bidding Logan reasoned that partner

had little or nothing – possibly a jack. He felt it wassafe to lead hearts – he thought it likely that declar-er had just the ace-king-queen of hearts. Declarerwon the ♥K and led a spade toward the board.

Logan asked himself, “Why isn’t declarerattacking diamonds?” He finally decided thatdeclarer had bid 2NT on the singleton ♦K and wasleading spades to set up a late entry to dummy’sdiamonds. He saw that the diamond suit could beset up if declarer overtook the king and continuedthe suit. Declarer’s problem was how to get back todummy to cash the good diamonds.

Logan blocked this plan by playing low and allow-ing dummy’s ♠10 to take the trick. Declarer cameback to hand with a heart and cashed his third heart.Next came another spade. Logan played the queen, cashed the ace and led his stiff ♣Q, which declarerducked. If he won the trick he had no way to untanglehis winners. But when Logan led a diamond, declarerwas no better off – the defense was bound to get anoth-er trick whether declarer played diamonds or clubs. Hedecided to play clubs, so that “powerful” East handtook the setting trick with the ♣10.

Damiani messageDear Al Levy and Jay Baum:

I would like to thank you again very muchfor your kind invitation to visit the NewOrleans National. As I said in a previous mail,I was not so sure to be able to attend, and as amatter of fact recent developments in the worldprevent me from coming.

It is a real pity because I would have lovedto be with all of you on this particular occa-sion. Please accept my sincere regrets andapologies.

I will be in touch with you later on as Imay come to the US next year earlier thanscheduled for New York in July.

Please convey my best wishes and regardsto all the directors, staff and players.

With best regards, José Damiani

Are they eligible? The Senior Knockout team headed by Carolyn

Lynch won two early matches in which the oppo-nents withdrew because they were so far behind. That brings up a question – is the Lynch team eligi-ble for overall awards? Don’t they have to play60% of the boards? (P.S. - We’re only kidding.)

New Gold Life MasterLynne Shah of Plant City FL became a Gold

Life Master (more than 2500 points) when she wonthe Wednesday Stratified Senior Pairs with her hus-band Barat.

Honeymooners Bob and Sharon Fogle.

Happy honeymoonSharon and Bob Fogle of Canterbury NH were

married in July but they decided to postpone theirhoneymoon because they were in the middle ofbuilding a house – and besides, they wanted tocome to the Fall NABC in New Orleans.

So far, everything is working out fine. Theymoved into the house about two weeks ago andthey’ve won two knockout events in New Orleansand placed in a third.

They won the Dead Turkey Walking KO,Bracket 8, and the New York Bracketed AM KO,Bracket 4 – and they placed in the Baton RougeCompact KO.

Now they’re headed home to New Hampshirewhere Sharon owns a vending machine companyand Bob operates his own computer consultingcompany.

Dennis Dawson will always remember Boards31 and 32 of the Senior Knockout Teams semifinal. He held the A-10-9-7-4 of spades on 31, and hecouldn’t believe his eyes when he picked up ♠A 109 7 4 on 32 as well.

His team, whose non-playing captain wasCarolyn Lynch of Marblehead MA, picked up 23IMPs on these two deals – enough to convince theiropponents to concede and withdraw.

There it is – eight clubs, three spades and aheart on top. Paul Hackett of England, sitting East, found the imaginative lead of the ♦K, no doubtbased on his partner’s double. After getting a lookat dummy, he shifted to a spade!

Wold and Meckstrothvie for Crane crown

The following is a letter to the editor from MikePassell.

We are nearing the end to one of the most excit-ing masterpoint races in recent memory. Two of thevery best players in the world – my close friend andregular partner, Eddie Wold, and another goodfriend and frequent teammate, Jeff Meckstroth, have gone toe-to-toe since January.

Unlike the old days of Barry Crane and RonAndersen, this battle has been one conducted in afriendly, courteous but highly competitive nature. Each has played only professionally, with theirprospective schedules known to each other.

Jeff’s advantage has been a very powerfulnational team that also won this year’s BermudaBowl world championship in Monte Carlo earlierthis month.

Eddie’s advantage was a three-week periodwhen Jeff was in France at the EuropeanChampionships – where he and Eric Rodwell wonthe prestigious Open Pairs and received almost noACBL masterpoints.

All in all it has been a very exciting time for all,and it should have been more widely publicized bythe ACBL Bridge Bulletin. This is the type of goodpublicity the ACBL can use. I have had literallydozens of people asking about who was in front andhow everyone was doing.

At every tournament I have attended, theBulletin has given literally zero publicity to theplayers involved and even failed to list the stand-ings in at least one recent issue.

I personally enjoyed the year very much, and Ibelieve the bridge-playing public would have also.

Good enough for an overcall

Former caddies Kyle Larsen (left) and MattKoltnow reminisce with Caddymaster JackieMatthews.

Larsen attends caddy reunion

A basketball player from Loyola Universityhere in New Orleans, a former caddy who won aNorth American championship here, another for-mer caddy who’s now an ACBL TournamentDirector – all turned out for the Caddy Reunionyesterday afternoon.

Caddymaster Jackie Matthews looked over thegroup and said, “This is really fun.”

She pointed out Jonathan Sims, the Loyolaplayer. Matthews told him about a picture she hadtaken years ago with Oscar Robinson. “Are yougoing to be the next Big O?” she asked.

“No,” he replied, “I’m a point guard.”One former caddy is Kyle Larsen, Bermuda

Bowl champion in 2001 and ACBL Grand LifeMaster who won the Life Master Open Pairs earli-er this week. He showed up for the reunion in suitand tie, and Matthews reminisced, “Kyle startedcaddying when he was nine and he got $4 a session. He thought he’d died and gone to Heaven when hegot raised to $5 a session.”

Matt Koltnow got more when he caddied at theBaltimore NABC in 1987. He’s now an ACBL tour-nament director.

Others at the reunion were Matt and RobMeckstroth, Tina Sunderlin and Anne Beye – plusthe 60 or so caddies who are working here.

“It’s really fun here in the South,” saidMatthews, who has worked with as many as 216caddies at the last Las Vegas NABC and as few assix (yes, 6) for the final session at the lastMinneapolis NABC. “They’re all nice kids butthey’re so polite here. One of the head caddies wasgiving instructions and another caddy said, ‘Yes,sir’. The head caddy is only 24 and he was some-what taken aback.”

Head caddies must be 18 or older, have workedat least five NABCs and have displayed leadershipqualities. They serve as team captains and eachteam captain is responsible for one or more events.

They direct the other caddies, check in with thedirector in charge of the event, work with the set-upcrew and make sure “their” caddies get the jobdone.

Matthews has turned the job over to the teamcaptains but admitted, “It’s awfully hard not to stickaround and make sure it all gets done. It (the teamcaptain system) is good for them and it’s good forme.”

Then she adds a trademark Matthews state-ment, accompanied by a trademark Matthewssmile: “I just love these kids.”

me all over North America. I have interacted withlocal bridge organizers, club managers, softwaredevelopers, journalists and players at every level. The same live interest was visible everywhere.”

Levy feels that no group shows more devotionto the game than the thousands of volunteers whomake the game work at the local level and hundredsof expert volunteers who lecture and serve on advi-sory committees. “They are the heart of theACBL,” said Levy. “So many dedicated volunteers. It says a great deal about what our game has tooffer.”

Levy is looking forward to his work at theworld level now that he has been elected as anACBL member on the World Bridge Federationexecutive committee. “I hope to continue myefforts for greater cooperation among all nationalorganizations. A strong and visible world presencewill go far in promoting our game.”

Levy feels very strongly on the brown-stickercontroversy. Brown-sticker conventions and systemsare highly complex and convoluted, and it is very dif-ficult for an opponent to prepare for play against ateam using brown-sticker methods. Levy is verymuch in favor of banning brown-sticker methods. However, this won’t happen for a while. The WBFExecutive voted to continue to allow brown-stickersat its meeting in Monte Carlo earlier this month.

Levy pointed out that we now have a majorpresence on the Internet with the newly designedacbl.org website that will soon be released. Wehave had 125,000 sanctioned tables of online playat acbl-online.

Levy fully realizes how important it is to getyoung people interested in bridge. “The ACBL has anactive school program that supplies bridge materialand pays teachers to teach in more than 250 schoolclasses throughout North America,” he said. “Morethan 4000 youngsters have taken lessons this year.”

More than 150 pieces of software were givenaway to young players during the past year, and Levysays there’s a lot more – all the young players have todo is ask. He has programs like Bridge Master 2000,Bridge Baron, Jack, Microbridge and Q-Plus.

The ACBL is in excellent financial shape, andthe Board is continuing its policy of investing in thefuture by directing funds to services and marketing.

Speaking on a personal level, Levy said, “I’vemade so many friends all over the world. I have areal upbeat feeling about the future.

“The magic in our game has the potential tocapture the masses,” Levy believes. “Bill Gates andWarren Buffett think that everyone should be play-ing bridge. What an endorsement!”

Goodwill MessageHave you said “thank you” to a caddy during

this NABC? The caddies pick up slips each roundduring pair games and move boards during teamgames – despite players’ best efforts to hide thescore slips and the boards. A word of thanks willbrighten their day – and yours, too.

Aileen Osofsky, ChairmanNational Goodwill Committee

Hall of Fame CommitteeThe Hall of Fame Committee will meet at 9:30

a.m. Saturday in the Beauregard Room on the fifthfloor.

Committee members only are invited to attend.
