At the time, I was jobless and in dire need of funds to pay my school tuition and living expenses — though I was always sure to have enough to pay card fees! Needing a job badly, I got up enough courage to go to Zeke’s office. After all, I was from Iraq and he was Lebanese. We were both Arabs, and I hoped he has some position for me. He regretted that he couldn’t help immediately, but promised that he would be in touch. I didn’t get the job, but I left his office with a few bridge tips. Later in years we became close friends. The new policy reads as follows: Electronic devices, excluding health-related equipment, capable of sending or receiving communication, including but not limited to, headphones, earphones, cellular phones and mini-computers: (1) shall not be allowed in the playing areas, adjacent hallways, restrooms or accessible break areas; and (2) shall not be used during a session. These restrictions shall apply to all pairs, team members, captains, coaches, recorders and kibitzers and shall apply throughout any actual playing session or segment. A violation of this policy shall result in a disciplinary penalty of one full board (or 12 IMPs at that form of scoring) for the first offense. A second offense shall result in disqualification from the event for the pair/team. Kibitzers violating this policy shall be removed from the playing area for the remainder of the session. These devices are not permitted near the playing area, even if they are turned off. Cappelli and Bitterman posted a score of plus 50.31 IMPs in the afternoon session and plus 50.94 IMPs in the second, to finish with plus 101.25. In second place with plus 96.30 IMPs are Peter Boyd of Silver Spring MD and Steve Robinson of Arlington VA. Cappelli and Bitterman had the best score of the 246 entrants. Culham, Fung set pace in Women’s Pairs The Edmonton AB duo of Susan Culham and Kiz Fung led the field of qualifiers in yesterday’s opening round of the Whitehead Women’s Pairs. Culham and Fung scored 61.62% in the afternoon and followed it with a 57% in the evening session to finish with a total of 758 matchpoints (25 was top). Close behind with 755 are Diane Walker of Gaithersburg MD and Mickie Kivel of Potomac Falls VA. Lynn Baker of Austin TX and Karen McCallum are third with 749.50. In the qualifying round, there were 70 pairs. Forty will play in today’s two-session final. See page 10 for the complete list of qualifiers. Red Ribbon Pairs: Develin, Chen in front With a huge 69.72% game in the second qualifying session, Mike Develin of Berkeley CA and Li-Chung Chen of Cupertino CA jumped into the lead in the Bean Red Ribbon Pairs. Develin and Chen scored 56.85% in the first session, and finished the day with a score of 822.26 (top was 25). In second with 804.50 are Jingsong Liu of Kirkland WAand Brian Zaugg of Burien WA. Quarterfinal action in Vanderbilt KO The team led by Jim Mahaffey (Mahaffey, Gunnar Hallberg, Fredrik Nystrom, Peter Bertheau, Zhao Jie and Fu Zhong) won their quarterfinal match against Barnet Shenkin’s squad, 163-152. Shenkin’s team was David Bakhshi, Bart Bramley and Nikolay Demirev. Mahaffey enjoyed a 28-IMP lead at the half, but Shenkin came roaring back to lead by 1 IMP after three quarters. Mahaffey won the last set, however, 53-41 to make it to the semifinal round. Ron Rubin led his team to victory in the remaining quarterfinal match-up, defeating Ralph Katz’s squad 137-103. Rubin (Russ Ekeblad, Peter Weichsel, Marcin Lesniewski, Louk Verhees and Jan Jansma) built a significant halftime lead and did not look back. Mahaffey will face Rubin in the semifinal. The Meltzer squad continues to cruise. The original No. 7 seed captained by Rose Meltzer has won its Vanderbilt matches by an average of 85 IMPs. Yesterday, they dispatched the squad led by Winthrop Allegaert 153-125. Meltzer’s lineup includes Kyle Larsen, Alan Sontag, Roger Bates, Tor Helness and Geir Helgemo. Allegaert played with Judith Bianco, Justin Lall, Kevin Bathurst, Jaggy Shivdasani and Lapt Chan. Team Poland led by captain Krzysztof Martens continued their winning ways by taking out John Onstott’s team 122-87. The Poles led all four quarters of the contest. Their roster includes Martens, Krzystof Jassem, Boguslaw Gierulski and Jerzy Skrzypczak. Meltzer takes on Team Poland in the other semifinal bracket.

JUST FOR NEW PLAYERS

Until Milton Worksuggested the 4-3-2-1point count we all findso useful, quick trickcount was the usualmethod for handevaluation. Work diedin 1934, but his countwas adopted andpopularized by the giantof mid-20th Centurybridge, Charles Goren.

The Work count, as it was called for a long time, was simple and easy to remember. It gave value tounsupported queens and to jacks, which werelargely ignored with the earlier quick trickmethod.

If we rely only on those 40 high-card points inevaluating hands, we ignore common sense. In thefirst place, length clearly is also important indeveloping tricks.

Dummy♣9 7 6 5

You♣8 4 3 2

Even if you are missing all five honors, thissuit will often produce a trick. All it takes is foryou to realize that the outstanding cards are likelyto be divided 3-2. You just lead the suit until yourlast two cards in the suit are good. If you wonderwhy someone else makes more tricks in notrumpthan you do, it’s likely that the potential of suitslike this is recognized by them.

It’s easy to argue, too, that aces are somewhatundervalued at only four points. Why? Thinkabout it. If you have a king or queen, you mightnot be able to win the trick. An opponent mighthave a higher card.

If you have the ace, you have control. Unlessthe ace is singleton, you can win the trick whenyou want to — gaining the advantage of playingnext.

Spot card 10s are given nonumeric value in the 4-3-2-1 count, but their value should not beunderestimated.

Thinking about raising 1NT to2NT? Use “Eight over Eight” if youaren’t sure. You should have eightcards of 8 or higher. Mere high-cardpoints sometimes are not enough.Good spots will help you to moretricks.

The modern approach to pointcount tends to use HCP and lengthfor hand evaluation before a fit hasbeen discovered. It can be scary toopen a hand because it hasshortness, only to have partner insiston your short suit. A short suit, forinstance, is not really an asset whenyou are playing in an eight-card fitwhere you have five and dummyhas three:♠K J 9 7 2 ♥6 ♦A Q 8 7 ♣K 6 5

You’re playing spades after the♥A opening lead. Dummy comesdown with four low hearts. Eachtime the opponents gain the lead, they’ll lead hearts. And then, to icethe cake, trumps split 4—1. You’veruffed two hearts and now have a 3-3 spade fit, while one of the opponents has longertrumps than you do.

Shortness in dummy, however, can be a hugeasset. Consider this hand:♠Q 10 5 ♥6 ♦K J 8 7 ♣Q 6 5 4 2.

It has only 8 HCP, but when playing in a spadecontract, the singleton heart is useful – you can usedummy’s trumps to ruff. One of the best questionsyou can ask yourself as declarer is, “Is thereanything I should do before I draw trump?” There’sa fairly large book entitled, The Drawing of Trumpsand Its Postponement.

Using dummy count evaluation also works

wonderfully if you are considering a takeoutdouble. A big part of your message with the typicaltakeout double is that you are short in the opener’ssuit but can support any of the others. Consider: ♠K 7 5 4 ♥A 7 3 2 ♦6 ♣Q J 9 8.

Most of us would nott open this hand, but it’scertainly worth a double if your right-handopponent opens 1♦. That singleton isn’t justworth two points, but three, and it’s second- roundcontrol just like a king. Count a void for five —-even more than an ace. Why? Because you canwin the trick or not as you please.

Opening lead: ♠J.Bidding commentary: Responder should not

think twice about responding 1♥ or 1♠ to anopening bid with 5 high-card points and a five-card major. Do it! However, after the 1♥ response,South shouldn’t give any real thought to bidding4♥. The North hand counts to 17 support points(forget the ♣J). North has 15 HCP plus onesupport point for each doubleton. The jump raisepromises 16-18 support points, so North is ontarget. East, a passed hand, has a perfect takeoutdouble if North opens 1♥, but he can’t come inintelligently over the 1♦ bid. A double is out of

the question with a singleton in an unbid major, andovercalling on a crummy four-card suit is also offthe wall.

Defensive commentary: After East cashes twospades, he shifts to a low club rather than the ace. After all, declarer may have the king and misguessby playing low, thus losing two club tricks. As ithappens, West has the king and returns the ♣3(original fourth best showing four clubs) to East, who gets out with a club to South’s queen. Southmust have the queen as West won trick three with

♣K, denying the queen. Defenders take trickswith the lower or lowest equal.

Play commentary: South has to find the ♥Qholding nine trumps between the two hands. We’ve come too far to play by nursery rhymes.East, a passed hand, has turned up with the ♠A Qplus the ♣A for a total of 10 HCP. Most playersopen 12-point hands these days, so it is odds onthat West has the ♥Q. South does best to cash the♥K and lead a heart to the jack.

Special guestsThere were 26 special guests playing yesterday.

Why were they special? Each had 0—20masterpoints. Most of the group were playing intheir first tournament.

Classes began last May at the Bridge Connectionin Southfield MI, where Linda Golumbia is teacherand part-owner. They have been preparing for thetrip since then. “They came with the expectation of agreat experience,” said Golumbia. “We did a lot ofprep,” she said. “We covered what they shouldexpect, including basics such as how to fill out theconvention card.”

The players meet each Thursday. At thebeginning, Golumbia gives a 30 minute lecture withhandouts. Mostly the basics are covered. “Nothingfancy,” she said. Then the students play an 18-boardduplicate game. Afterwards, Golumbia stays andanswers questions or discusses problem hands.

“The students are wonderful,” added Golumbia.“They are a terrific group, and so much fun to workwith. Their enthusiasm is amazing.”

Golumbia doesn’t use a specific curriculum forher lessons. “At first, I didn’t know what I wasgoing to do, so basically, I just winged it,” she said.“My children are grown, so I have the time and

“Retract, or I’ll sue!”An irritated Howard Weinstein came into the

Daily Bulletin office on Monday, the same day that hisname appeared in a front-page story in our modestpublication. The piece, by former local hot-shot ZekeJabbour, incorrectly included Weinstein in a list offamous Michigan players. Mr. Weinstein objected, primarily due to the fact that, prior to this year’sNABC in Detroit, he has never set foot in the state.

“I’ve lived in the Chicago area and Florida, and Iwent to school in Minnesota, but I’ve never been toMichigan. Never. Not once. I deny it. The DailyBulletin piece linking my name to the state ofMichigan is damaging not only to me, but also to myreputation. Retract it forthwith, or I’ll sue,” saidWeinstein, through his attorneys.

So just to be clear, dear readers, HowardWeinstein is not, repeat NOT, from Michigan.

In tomorrow’s issue: Howard Weinstein, the WhizKid of Lansing!

in the same city, we both come from Arab descent, weboth like to eat and we love to play bridge. We bothmarried late in life to two of the most popular andwell-liked women in the bridge world: his lovely andendearing Sharon, and my beautiful and compassionateElaine. Without a doubt, they were the best things thatever happened to us.

TOURNAMENT APPEALSheld the ♠Q J and the ♦A, while East held the ♠K 9and the ♥K. Dummy came down to the ♠8 5 and the♥Q.

At this point East stated that he would hold the ♠K.West then stated that she would hold the ♦A.

The Ruling: The table director applied Law 57(Premature Play) ruling that West, in effect, lost the♦A. Directorial review determined that the appropriatelaw was 68A (Claim Defined) as this was determined tobe a claim, not a premature play. In accordance withLaw 70 (Contested Claim), it was determined that inlight of the auction and play up to the point of the claimit would be irrational for East to discard the ♦A.Therefore, the result of 5♣ by North down one, North-South minus 50, was instated.

The Appeal: South claimed to have seen some orall of East’s cards when he made his statement aboutthe spade king. South wanted the committee to considera procedural penalty (PP) against East-West.

When asked, South refused to quantify thelikelihood that East would have kept a heart not a spadefor trick 13 or that West would pitch the ♦A prior totrick 13.

Neither North nor West saw East’s cards. Westknew East had four spades from the auction so wouldnever keep a second high spade to discard the ♦A.

The Decision: The committee agreed with thedirector’s corrected ruling. Law 57 was not on point.East’s statement was tantamount to a claim. Thecommittee judged that East would keep the ♠K in theone-card ending, both because she had seen North pitchon the ♥A and ruff a heart and because she said that shewould keep it in her claim statement. West would thenretain the ♦A as her 13th card both because she knewfrom East’s 3♠ bid and the play so far that North heldno more spades and because the ♠Q was not a winner. The committee upheld the final director decision of 5♣by North down one, North-South minus 50.

The committee considered a PP and determinedthat East’s actions were possibly unfortunate butcertainly understandable – a PP was not warranted.

The only conceivable reason for not awarding anappeal without merit warning (AWMP) was the initialincorrect ruling. Two members of the committee felt theincorrect ruling was enough reason not to award an

Welcome to Detroit,mister!

Playing against Niel Waletzky and Phil Becker,Cohen first of all overcalled, then found the psychicdouble of 3NT.

This was not the right moment for this action. The opponents turned the cube, and collected 800.David and Larry staggered away from the table, holding their respective foreheads, to hear oneopponent mutter to the other, “Next time, don’t tryand mess with us.”

On the receiving endBy Barry Rigal

Although I was on the wrong end of this, Ithought Michael Yuen and Angela Fenton did verywell here.

You could say the 1♠ bid deserved a fate worsethan it got. But given that 3♣ is an easy 150, thedefenders needed the third undertrick to get back topar.

Here’s how the defense went. The ♦Q was ledand ducked all around. Another diamond was led tothe ♦K. Yuen made a very thoughtful shift to the ♥8to the ♥J and ♥Q. The ♥A was led, East playing the♥9. Then Fenton played a club to the ♣K for the♦A and a fourth diamond. Declarer ruffed high asFenton pitched both her hearts. Now declarer had toguess spades, with no reentry to hand.

Not surprisingly, he led low to the ♠8, since thetrumps were known to be 3-1. This resulted in down150 —- mission accomplished.

In the round of 64 in the Vanderbilt KO Teams, declarer was nearly able to pull off a rare play.

♠ Q J 8 7 4 2♥ K 7 3♦ 10 5 4♣ 2

♠ A♥ A J 8 4♦ A Q♣ A K J 8 7 6

North South2♣

2♦ 3♣3♠ 3NTPass

Mehmet Ozdil declared 3NT on the unhelpful♠9 lead. He won the ♠A, played the ♣A droppingan ominous ♣Q on his left. He then continued withthe ♣K, and the ♣8. West pitched a low spade andthen a low diamond, so East played the ♥6 to the♥4, the ♥9, and . . . Ozdil ducked!

This was the full deal:♠ Q J 8 7 4 2♥ K 7 3♦ 10 5 4♣ 2

♠ 9 6 3 ♠ K 10 5♥ Q 10 9 5 ♥ 6 2♦ K 9 8 3 2 ♦ J 7 6♣ Q ♣ 109 8 5 4 3

♠ A♥ A J 8 4♦ A Q♣ A K J 8 7 6

West, Craig Gower, actually played back adiamond, so declarer had nine tricks.

A heart return is more fun: Declarer wins inhand and clears the clubs. When East wins andreturns a diamond, declarer flies with the ♦A, andreaches this position:

♠ Q J♥ K♦ 10♣ —

♠ 6 ♠ K 10♥ Q 5 ♥ —♦ K ♦ J 7♣ — ♣ —

♠ —♥ A 8♦ Q♣ 6

On the ♣6, West is caught in a stepping stonesqueeze, and must pitch a spade. Declarer goes tothe ♥K to exit with a diamond, and collects the ♥Aat trick 13.
