The ACBL, District 7, Georgia Unit 114, Mid-Atlantic Bridge Conference and other local groups have strongly supported our tournament. Atlanta NABCs have been great tournaments in the past, but I believe this will be the best ever because we have such an outstanding group of volunteers. They have embraced the idea of making this a great NABC for all players to give back to the game they love. We have many special giveaways and some special arrangements with restaurants. If you came without a car, MARTA will be a big help. Becky Butler is one of the co-chairs who will be hosting Entertainment and Hospitality. We have a wide variety of special events planned every day, including musicians, singers, magicians, comedians, a hypnotist and many other special events with games, food and prizes. Our other co-chair, Dick Myers, is ready to help you see the exciting City of Atlanta. We will also have many educational bridge speakers and other interesting topics. We are also pleased to host the 2013 Youth NABC Aug. 1-3, 2013, which is being chaired by Patty Tucker of Atlanta. This will be followed by the 3rd World Youth Open Bridge Championships August 4-11. The bridge world lost one of its luminaries April 28 when Grand Life Master and world champion Erik Paulsen died in Southern California. Paulsen, born in Oslo, Norway, immigrated to the U.S. shortly after World War II and started playing competitive bridge shortly thereafter. Hugh Ross, who teamed with Paulsen on the victorious USA Bermuda Bowl team in 1976, said that simplicity was a key to Paulsen’s game. “He wasn’t big on systems,” Ross said. “Kind of a seat-of-the-pants type player, and I love seat of the pants.” Ross said that Paulsen’s expertise went far beyond that. “Technically he was very good,” Ross said. “And he was really a winner. He had a winner’s attitude. He wanted to destroy the opponents wherever possible.” Personally, Ross said Paulsen’s passing was a huge loss. “He was a very good friend,” Ross said. “We didn’t always agree on everything, but we respected and liked each other a whole lot.” Gerry Bare, who teamed with Paulsen to take second in the1970 Reisinger, said he was deeply saddened to hear of Erik’s death. “Not only was he my best partner over the years, but a good friend,” Bare said. “I attended his wedding. Ada was the best thing that ever happened to him.” While partnering with the likes of Ross and Bare brought world-wide accolades, Paulsen was quick to point out that his wife Ada was his favorite partner. Ada Paulsen, who met Erik at a club game in the Sixties and became his wife in 1972, said her husband’s dummy play was his strong suit. “Erik’s strength was his play of the hand. He knew ever percentage of card combinations.” While the Reisinger Board-A-Match Teams became a personal favorite, winning the event in 1962, 1968, 1974 and 1975, Paulsen’s crowning achievement was his victory over the Italians in the Bermuda Bowl. He also topped the Blue Ribbon Pairs in 1969 to go with numerous high finishes in a variety of NABC and world events. At the height of his championship form, Ada said Erik gave up serious competitive bridge to focus on his career with Rockwell Engineering. “He attained his goal of retiring early in 1987,” Ada said. “And we moved to a golf course in Upland, and he spent his retirement days playing golf and bridge.” Friend Warren Cederborg said, “Erik was more a friend than a partner. But no matter how rarely you might sit across the table from a player, you can always spot a winner by his or her table presence. Erik was not only technically sound, but he had a champion’s table presence. His passing is not only a personal loss, but a loss on the elite end of the competitive scale.” Opening reception Erik Paulsen 1926–2013 By Warren Cederborg Important notices for players in national events Players who reside outside North America Participation in the von Zedtwitz Life Master Pairs is limited to ACBL members who have achieved the rank of Life Master. Stewart signing books today

Frank Stewart, syndicated bridge columnist and longtime contributor to the ACBL Bridge Bulletin, will sign copies of his new book, “What’s Your Call?” from 2 to 3 p.m. today at the Bridge Book Desk on the Exhibit Level at the Hyatt. Stewart will also sign copies of his other books, including “Where’s the Queen?”

NABC slideshowThe Atlanta planning committee is putting

together a slideshow of the overall winners of tournament events. We will take pictures of overall winners in the Prize Room located on the Exhibit Level, two floors below the main lobby. The Prize Room will be open each day between 9:15-9:50 a.m., 2-2:50 p.m. and 6:30-7:20 p.m. We need both partners from a pair and/or all members of a team to come to the prize room for the picture if they are the overall winners of an event. The slideshow will be on display on the Exhibit Level and will include other tournament information and presentations you won’t want to miss.

Volunteers Needed for ‘Learn Bridge In a DAY?’ Patty Tucker, with Whirlwind Bridge, will host

a Learn Bridge In a DAY? event on Sunday, Aug. 4 from 1 to 6 p.m. This event is for individuals with no bridge experience or those who have played social bridge and are interested in learning more about duplicate.

The event requires a coach at every table to help participants follow the lesson. We’re looking for volunteers to be table coaches. ACBL members who have earned even 5 masterpoints will enjoy coaching. A large attendance is expected, so the more table coaches available, the better.

This is a great opportunity for local club managers and teachers to network with some of their future members.

Say ‘cheese!’ACBL has retained a professional photographer

to update images for our publications and website. We are looking for you — Hall of Famers, NABC winners, tournament staff, Grand Life Masters, Bulletin contributors, etc. Please look nice.

The photographer will be located in the

Kennesaw room, LL3, Friday, Saturday and Sunday between 9 –10:30 a.m. and by appointment. Email [email protected]

JUST FOR NEW PLAYERSYou and your conventions

By Brent ManleyWelcome to the NABC! If this is your first, you

are in for a treat! The ACBL tournament directors running the newcomer games are the best at what they do. They are there to answer your questions and to make sure you enjoy yourself. They are very approachable, so don’t be shy if you have questions.

Starting with tomorrow’s edition, the theme for this set of Daily Bulletins is Have You Discussed? It is aimed at helping you get the most out of the conventions you play.

Meanwhile, today’s edition will cover aspects of Alertable conventions and protocols for explaining when an opponent asks after you Alert.

You can get a leg up on what’s Alertable by checking your convention card. The Alertable conventions are listed in red. One exception: Puppet Stayman – usually used over an opening of 2NT to ask if opener has a five-card major – is no longer Alertable. The responses, however, are Alertable.

You may have also noticed that some conventions are listed in blue. Those require simple Announcements.

Remember, when partner opens 1NT, you should state your range. “Fifteen to seventeen,” is all you need to say.

Other Announcements: Transfers to major suits over 1NT and 2NT openers. Simply say one word: “Transfer.”

Some pairs agree that a bid of 1NT over a major-suit opening is forcing for one round. Simply say, “Forcing.” The same goes for “semi-forcing,” which other pairs play. What that means is that if opener has a minimum with balanced shape, something like♠K Q 7 6 5 ♥A 5 4 ♦Q J 10 ♣10 9,

he can pass 1NT.

Whatever conventions you play, when partner Alerts, the opponents are entitled to an explanation. An important point: A player may not ask about the meaning of a bid until it is his turn to call.

When an opponent asks, the proper response is a description of the features of the convention. It is not correct to simply state the name of the convention.

An example is the convention invented by William Flannery. If you use that convention and your partner opens 2♦, you say, “Alert.” If an opponent asks, it is improper to say simply, “Flannery.” This is the correct explanation: “The bid shows five hearts, four spades and 11 to 15 high-card points.”

Say you are playing Bergen raises. You open 1♠. After your left-hand opponent passes, partner bids 3♣. When you Alert, if an opponent asks, say, “It shows four-card support and 6 to 9 high-card points.” It is improper to say, “It’s a Bergen raise.”

Say your opponent opens 1NT and your partner bids 2♦. You Alert and the next player says, “Please explain.” It’s wrong to say simply, “Cappelletti.” You should say, “The bid shows both majors.”

You may not know the features of all the Alertable conventions you see on the convention card, but if you don’t know what it is, you certainly aren’t playing it, so there’s no problem. Do keep in mind that if you ask and the response is the name of the convention, you are entitled to more information. Politely ask the Alerter’s partner to describe the partnership’s agreements for the convention. After all, not every partnership plays a convention the same way.

Thinking bridgeBy Eddie Kantar

Dlr: South ♠ A 7 5 Vul: None ♥ K 7 4 ♦ 9 8 4 ♣ Q 7 4 3 ♠ J 10 2 ♠ 9 3 ♥ Q 6 5 ♥ A 10 9 8 ♦ K Q 10 5 ♦ 7 6 2 ♣ J 9 5 ♣ A 8 6 2 ♠ K Q 8 6 4 ♥ J 3 2 ♦ A J 3 ♣ K 10

West North East South 1♠ Pass 2♠ All Pass

Opening lead: ♦K.Bidding Commentary: North does best to

raise to 2♠ with a flat 9-count. A raise is more encouraging than a 1NT response. Normally, when a five-card suit is supported, the hand can be upgraded. But when the distribution of the hand is 5-3-3-2, forget it.

Defensive commentary: When the king is led from the K-Q-(x) and low cards appear in the dummy, third hand signals encouragement with the jack or ace, but not with a doubleton.

Defensive commentary #2: On defense, when

a balanced dummy appears, think “passive.” Lead safe suits, suits that cannot cost a trick. Side-suit tricks cannot get away. Where are they going? When there is no long suit in dummy for declarer to establish, defensive tricks will not vanish. Patience. After the ♦K holds, West does best to shift to a low spade, the safest exit. If East has the ♠Q or ♠K, nothing has been lost. It’s okay even if partner has no honor. Any other switch can (and does) cost a trick.

Play commentary: It is routine to duck the lead of a king holding A-J-x-(x) hoping the suit is continued. This hand is a dogfight to see who can avoid breaking new suits. Declarer has seven top tricks and will probably make eight, but it is not a certainty.

The Atlanta staff has many special events planned. The starting times will be 10 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on most days. All I/N events will be played at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta.

Frank Stewart will discuss “Developing Thought Processes.”

The von Zedtwitz Life Master Pairs is a six-session event with two qualifying, two semi-final and two final sessions. It is restricted to Life Masters. At stake is the von Zedtwitz Gold Cup.

In 1930, Waldemar von Zedtwitz donated the Gold Cup, which was presented to the winners of the Life Master Pairs. The first winners: von Zedtwitz and P. Hal Sims.

Waldemar von Zedtwitz (1896-1984), ACBL president emeritus, was president of the ACBL in 1948 and of its parent organization, the American Bridge League, in 1932. He was named Honorary Member by the ABL in 1931.

When dissension threatened to break up the ACBL in 1948, the contesting factions agreed to von Zedtwitz as president and chairman with carte blanche power. He is credited with saving the ACBL. In 1949, upon the League’s rehabilitation, he immediately returned his carte blanche power to the Board of Directors.

He helped found the World Bridge Federation and played a major role in the formation of the ACBL Charity Foundation.

As a player, von Zedtwitz was noted for his versatility in playing with exponents of different systems. He was one of the first 10 to be named Life Master (he was No. 4) when the category was created in 1936.

Von Zedtwitz won many national auction bridge champions and nearly all the contract bridge championships. He and Barbara Brier won the World Mixed Pairs in 1970 when von Zedtwitz was 74 and legally blind.

Daily BulletinVolume 6, Number 1 Friday, August 2, 2013

Five years ago, one of Patty Tucker’s biggest dreams was realized in Norcross GA, a suburb of Atlanta. The founder of Atlanta Junior Bridge had achieved major success with that organization, but she wanted more for young bridge players.

“There are groups of kids playing all over the country, but they never get to meet each other,” Tucker says with her typical passion.

“I met so many nice people who I have been friends with for years and years,” she adds, “and I met them at NABCs. I thought the kids deserved the same.”

That desire gave birth to the first Youth NABC, which was organized to run concurrent with a sectional in Norcross. When the three-day tournament concluded, Tucker counted 198 different players age 19 and younger, including 98 Atlanta Junior Bridge members. The number of participants is still a Youth NABC record.

Tucker, co-chair at this tournament with Bryan Delfs, says there’s a good chance the record will be broken in Atlanta.

Although Tucker has not chaired every Youth

NABC, she has not missed one. “I have helped where needed,” she says.

She loves the fact that some of the Youth NABC competitors meet online partners face to face for the first time, or get their first taste of duplicate.

The Youth NABC grew out of Atlanta Junior Bridge, which has taught bridge to 4000 young players. The AJB data base has more than 1400 families.

Kids, she says, go in and out of bridge, but there is a core of about 60 in the Atlanta area who play regularly and show up for all the tournaments.

Tucker says she was inspired to start the Youth NABC “because I thought there were a lot of kids who were just like me who would love bridge and want to play. I wanted to give them the opportunity to play with people their own age. It’s much more fun to play with your peers.”

Life is good for Tucker these days. She teaches 16 bridge classes a week, has a contract with Master Point Press to produce eight bridge books, and her Whirlwind Bridge company, which puts on the Learn Bridge in a DAY? seminars, is going great guns. She even gets to play bridge now and then, although not as often as her husband and favorite partner, Kevin Collins, would like.

In the end, she says, relationships and friends made through bridge are more important than masterpoints and trophies. “You can accumulate too many of those,” she says, “but you can never accumulate too many friends.”

Welcome to the Youth NABC

Where has the time gone? It seems like yesterday that we were playing bridge in Philadelphia. It seems like only a short time ago that this event was last in Atlanta.

Welcome to all of our new players, who are competing in the Youth NABC for the first time. Welcome back to all of those players who have previously attended a Youth NABC. We’re thrilled to have you with us.

Day one is over, and we are delighted to report that this is the largest start to the Youth NABC ever. We are expecting more and to arrive on Friday and Saturday, which has the potential to make this the largest Youth NABC ever.

If you have any friends or family members who aren’t playing, they can still register on site and participate.

We have some great entertainment planned for you as well, which will be held in the Hanover Ballroom at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Don’t forget to take your shot at naming the Mystery Hand, displayed in this issue.

Best of luck to all of our competitors!

Snehal Oberai of Atlanta fills out one of the forms with names from the collages created by Youth NABC Co-Chair Patty Tucker. Anyone who puts 15 names on the form will be entered in a drawing. Three winners will each receive an iTunes gift card. Entrants are encouraged to ask for help in identifying people in the collages, made up of photos from the first Youth NABC in 2008. Check out the collages on the next page.

The 6th Youth NABC featured this international table: Michael Luzzi, Amanda Luzzi, Venezuela; Madeline Wheaton, Canada, and Bunmi Soremi, Nigeria.

They came all the way from McGrath AK to play in the Youth NABC: seated, Cherish Andrews, Sterling Magnuson and Madelyn Novak; standing, Jett Novak, Sarah Edwards and Bryan Goodwin.

Wide variety of competitors forYouth NABC’s return to Atlanta

Erica Everett lives in Foley AL, a town of about 14,000 near the Florida Panhandle. She drove from there to Atlanta, and professes, “I can’t believe I did that.” Atlanta, she says, is “huge, and scary at times.” The traffic on the interstate highway is intimidating.

Still, Everett would do it again in a heartbeat if her daughter, Nia, wanted to attend another Youth NABC. Bridge, says Everett, is great for her daughter.

Nia is about to enter the fifth grade in Foley, and her mother notes that from the third grade to the end of the fourth, Nia’s math grades have improved measurably. “Her scores are now at the seventh-grade level,” Everett says, “and she improved in one year after starting bridge.”

Nia and her mother are among the players and families who have flocked to Atlanta for the 6th Youth NABC, the first of which took place five years ago in the Atlanta suburb of Norcross.

Nia plays bridge every Tuesday and proclaims bridge to be “pretty fun.” She says she likes the card play better than bidding.

Harley Bress, former ACBL employee now living and teaching school in tiny McGrath AK – population 300, “maybe 350,” he says – escorted three young players to the Youth NABC in Philadelphia last year. For the Atlanta tournament, he doubled the total.

David Metcalf and Nancy Watson are the tournament directors for the Youth NABC.

He says the three who went to Philadelphia last year spread the word about how much fun they had playing bridge. “More kids turned out to play this year,” Bress says. “They heard the other kids talking about how much fun they had so they wanted to come.”

Bress has offered bridge an elective for students at his school, and the youngsters are keen enough to play that they will stay on for the World Youth Open Bridge Championships, which begin on Saturday and

continue through Aug. 11.The young players have come from all over the

U.S. and from a few foreign countries. A contingent from China is expected today.

One table in the Thursday games featured players representing three different countries – Canada, Venezuela and Nigeria.

The Nigerian player, Bunmi Soremi, is the daughter of Dr. Oludapo Soremi, a pediatrician in Apopka FL, near Orlando. Bunmi is enrolled in a gifted program at her school and was encouraged by her teacher to take up bridge, which was just introduced, “because it includes problem solving, logic and strategy.”

Soremi says his other daughter is likely to acquire an interest in bridge because the girls are “competitive.”

Jake Olsen, about to enter his sophomore year in high school in Portland OR, traveled on his own to Atlanta for the Youth NABC. The trip across the country wasn’t so bad, the 15-year-old says, but confusion set in once he landed at the airport in Atlanta.

He couldn’t find the MARTA station right away and had to ask several time, then he wasn’t sure which train to take, but he’s settled in at the Best Western Hotel with three roommates.

Jake has been playing online with Amber Lin of New Jersey, and the two met in person for the first time in Atlanta. They won their section with a 64% game in the morning pairs event on Thursday.

Bridge, he says, “is a challenge, and it helps my mental ability in school. I really love it.”

Jake says he wasn’t much of a reader before taking up bridge, but now he’s reading a lot, favoring Kurt Vonnegut currently.

Nia Everett and her mom, Erica.

Amber Lin and Jake Olsen were second in the Thursday Youth Pairs, Strat A.

Electronic Device Policy The electronic device

policy at NABCs has been revised to allow players to bring electronic devices such as cell phones into the playing area provided that such devices are turned off.

Further, any such equipment must not be visible during the session

The policy applies to all pairs, team members, captains, coaches, kibitzers and play recorders, except those designated by the ACBL and are in force throughout any actual playing session or segment of play.

A violation of the policy will result in an automatic disciplinary penalty of one full board (or 12 IMPs at that form of scoring) for the first offense. A second offense will result in disqualification from the event for the pair/team. Kibitzers violating this policy will be removed from the playing area for the remainder of the session.

Slow PlaySlow play, as opposed to careful or thoughtful

play, is discourteous to your opponents -- and to all other competitors as well. Players and pairs who take more than their allotted time are subject to penalty.

In general, pairs who are rarely late will be warned while pairs who are habitually tardy and/or pay no attention to time limits will be penalized.

Cook to assume ACBL presidency

ACBL President Donald Mamula has resigned his position effective Aug. 12, the day after the 2013 Summer NABC. He will continue to represent the bridge players of District 19 on the ACBL Board of Directors.

Bill Cook, who represents District 10, has been elected to succeed Mamula. Cook’s term runs through the end of 2013.

InsiderWelcome to Atlanta! On Tuesday, the ACBL

trucks arrived in town with almost 50,000 pounds of bridge necessities. The Services Guys with able assistance from AMG1 and AMG2 set up almost a thousand card tables, three alphabets of section letters and a trailer load of youth supplies for the ACBL’s YNABC and the WBF’s WYOBC - OMG, maybe we should have brought that fourth alphabet just to cover Insider acronyms!

The local organizing committee has invested a lot of time and energy into putting together what promises to be a great tournament. They left the box several times to come up with some new, different and exciting entertainment, education and even exercise ideas for your enjoyment, enlightenment and edification. The Insider gives them an “E” for excellent efforts.

MonitoringAt this and future North American

Championships, ACBL will be monitoring NABC+ events with visible, real-time cameras. The images will be recorded and will be available for later official inspection and review.

By general monitoring of the session and participants’ behavior, ACBL has another source of information that may be useful in determining facts and settling issues arising from some types of ethical and behavioral complaints or actions. Please summon a director if a problem occurs at the table.

This procedure is intended to assure everyone that the playing field is level and that misbehavior will not be tolerated.

Today’s Game HonoreeReba Jernigan was a steadfast fixture at the

Chattanooga Bridge Center for many years. Reba’s passion for the game of bridge was contagious, and it was through her efforts that many of the players became “regulars.”

Reba served as president of Unit 206 for a number of years and later continued as a member of the unit board. She became president at a time when bridge in Chattanooga was declining. Reba’s organizational skills and enthusiasm brought the bridge tournaments back to life in Chattanooga, and her approach has been copied by many other bridge clubs. She served on the ACBL Board of Governors and was appointed to the National Goodwill Committee. A Silver Life Master, Reba is remembered for her desire to share her delight in duplicate bridge.
