elegates from 20 Asian Productivity Organization (APO) member states took part in the
53rd international workshop of Heads National Productivity Organization (NPO) in Bali Dwith Indonesian Minister of Manpower and Transmission H.E. Muhaimin Iskandar. CEO-
NPO Mr. Khawaja MOHAMMAD Yousuf along with Mr. Abdul Basit , Additional Secretary
Food Safety represented Pakistan. In this session Pakistan's proposal for expanding APO
membership was accepted discussed which was already by GBM. While speaking to the
delegation CEO-NPO Mr. Khawaja MOHAMMAD Yousuf stressed that non-member country
missions should be revived, member countries should collaborate more by increasing the I-
OSMs to fully capitalize on NPOs' productivity enhancement initiatives and also should increase
linkage with other international Productivity Organization like the WNPO and other major
International agencies working in this field. He also pointed out that more Pakistani resource
persons should be utilized by APO as there is active engagement done with other member
countries.
While talking about the government of Pakistan's medium-term socioeconomic development
agenda, Mr. Yousuf said that the main focus was on issues of energy, water, internal security,
human development, civil service reforms and provisions of infrastructure. He highlighted a plan
focusing on macroeconomic growth initiatives executed by NPO that offers efficient industrial
mechanism through Result Based Management. NPO Pakistan is supporting public and private
sector by promoting innovation and efficiency sessions, building high skilled human capacity
through skills development programs, providing technological up-gradation, promoting
research and development activities and encouraging exports by meeting demands of
competition, technology and higher labor productivity.
The meeting was also attended by three observers from the Southeast Asian Regional Center for
Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA), and Botswana National Productivity
Centre (BNPC). The main agenda items of this WSM were to reconfirm the APO Program Plan
for the 2013–2014 biennium, prioritize the policy statements from APO Directors at the 2012
GBM, review the current center of excellence and proposals for a new one, and review the
proposed new public-sector productivity framework.

due to the aligned mandate of both institutions. NPO and
UNIDO are working on multiple projects for promoting and
accelerating sustainable industrial development in Pakistan.
Under this project UNIDO will focus on the industrial sectors to
facilitate the sustainable energy projects through developing the
policy and regulatory framework on use of EE/RE in Industry,
create an investment platform for promoting investments in
RE/EE and scaling up the market and establish an accreditation
center for energy experts on EMS & Re applications in industry.
National Productivity Organization (NPO-Pakistan) in
collaboration with United Nations Industrial Development
Organization (UNIDO) Pakistan organized a workshop on
projects for “Sustainable Energy Initiatives for Industries in
Pakistan” under GEF funding in collaboration with Government
of Pakistan. The Chief Guest of the Workshop was Mr.
Muhammad Basharat Raja, Advisor to Prime Minister said that
government supports initiatives carried out by UNIDO and
NPO. He said that energy stands at the forefront of the complex
and interconnected challenges that define our increasingly
globalized world. He stressed that we should ensure universal
access to sustainable energy as this is pre-requisite to achieving
sustainable development and driving new models of economic
growth. Mr. Khawaja Muhammad Yousuf , CEO-NPO said that
NPO through its energy audits has been successfully been
saving energy cost of various industries to 15% and thus this
mindset need to be created among masses. He said that energy
efficiency is more important than energy generation. Adding he
said that UNIDO-NPO partnership has always been in favor

NPO Karachi office. Mr. Amir Inam was the resource person for
this training program. The resource speaker said that to succeed
in a world with greater time demands and leaner profit margins,
it must find alternatives to the way we do business. One
alternative is to simplify our work environment by outsourcing

NPO-Karachi organized a training program on “Need
Assessment Analysis." Sabahat Saeed Khan was the resource
speaker. He said that training needs assessment is a critical
activity for the training and development function. He said that
whether you are a human resource generalist or a specialist, you
should be adept at performing a training needs assessment. This
session began with an overview of the training and development
function and how the needs assessment fits into business process
and training needs assessment.

National Productivity Organization (NPO) and International Finance Corporation (IFC) in order to
develop critical mass in Pakistan have launched Business Edge Trainings for SME's in Pakistan. These
trainings focus six key areas like HR, Marketing, Finance & Accounting, Quality & Operations, Soft
Skills and Tourism.
NPO and IFC recently signed a deal which enables NPO to conduct Business Edge™ specialized
trainings for Small and Medium Enterprises (SME's) in Pakistan. The objective of this agreement is to
enhance the performance and competitiveness of SME's in the Country by delivering Business Edge™
trainings using the Business Edge™ Training Materials. These programs will introduce career path for
the undeveloped and developed working professionals who would like to act as a catalyst in
promoting management techniques as a professional trainer, consultant and auditor.
In this regards recently “Train the Trainers” program was successfully concluded by an Egyptian
resource speaker Ms. Heba El Soussy. IFC is schedule to conduct programs on SME related topics
with its partner organization like NPO, MDI, ECI and Fulcrum. These specialized trainings on Business
Edge™ will be developed by International Finance Corporation (IFC) and will focus on core
management skills, such as financial, operational, marketing, human resource management and
sound leadership skills.

APO TES program at NPO Regional office Karachi
Under the TES program on Kaizen, Poka-Yoke and 5S, Mr.
Satoru Tajima visited Karachi from 17th to 21st of
December 2012. This program was in cooperation with
Asian Productivity Organization (APO), Tokyo, Japan. The
visit of Mr. Tajima started with a lecture at NED University
of Engineering & Technology, Karachi. This lecture
covered the topic of Waste Removing Activities through
Kaizen & 5S. Faculty members and students of NED
University attended the lecture in large number. This
program was organized with patronage of Dr. Muzaffar
Mahmood, Pro Vice Chancellor of the University and
cooperation of Dr. Muhammad Tufail, Dean Faculty of
Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering and Dr. Syed
Aamir Iqbal, Chairman department of Industrial &
manufacturing Engineering. Mr. Tajima delivering the
lecture at NED University of Engineering & Technology,
Karachi. Mr. Satoru Tajima delivered a lecture at the office
of Pakistan Association of Automotive Parts and
Accessories Manufacturers (PAAPAM).
Munir K. Bana, Chairman of PAAPAM welcome the
delegation of NPO and appreciated the efforts of NPO in
improving the Quality and Productivity of economic
sectors. Small Kaizens in working areas. Mr. Tajima
showed a video in this session and explained the
participants how productivity can be improved with the
help of cohesive well defined efforts. Bridging concepts
with various case studies gave audience a chance to see
things from practical approaches by keeping challenges
of Pakistani industries.

Addressing the importance of Total Quality

Awareness & Implementation of ISO17025:2005
Laboratory accreditation in accordance with an international standard has become a significant pre-requisite in the international trade. Pakistan is still lagging behind in this field. keeping in view the importance of internationally accepted accreditation of local laboratories National Productivity Organization (NPO) Regional Office Karachi organized two days training course on “Awareness & Implementation of ISO.17025:2005” at NPO House Regional office Karachi. Mr. Zainul Ibad was the trainer of the program. Thirteen participants from different local laboratories participated in this training course. They asked relevant questions from the trainer which made the event a very informative and successful program.

Karachi organized a Training course on “Hazards Risk Analysis
and Assessment” on at Oil & Gas Development Company
Limited (OGDCL), Tando Alam Oil Field Hyderabad Sindh. The
purpose of the above training courses was to aware the
participants about Health Safety & Environment (HSE) issues
faced in the oil fields and the way these issues are addressed.
HSE trainer Mr. Asif Iqbal delivered the meaningful lecture to
the participants.
such kind of programs will be organized at Sukkur Chamber of
Commerce & Industry in order to collect related industrialists and
focus oriented audience. The closing ceremony was headed by
the Director Quality Enhancement Cell Sukkur IBA, Mr Altaf
Hussain Samo. Mr. Samo appreciated the efforts of NPO-
Pakistan on organizing the training program for educational
sector and industrial sector in Sukkur Sindh especially in interior
Sindh and he added that in future Sukkur IBA & NPO-Pakistan
will continue the activities for educational & industrial sector.
Syed Arshad Ali was the trainer of the training course and Syed
Arshad Ali delivered the meaningful lecture by covering all parts
with a professional approach. Participants from industries &
Sukkur IBA asked valuable questions on TQM from the trainer
and the trainer satisfied the participants.
The National Productivity Organization (NPO), Ministry of
Industries, Government of Pakistan, organized many training
programs for different sectors especially for industrial &
educational sectors in Sindh province. NPO, Regional office
Karachi continue this practice by organizing a one day training
program on “Total Quality Management” in collaboration with
Sukkur Institute of Business Administration, Sukkur.
The purpose of this training program was to enhance the
capacity of students, academia members, industrialist and
develop the bridge between industries, IBA Sukkur students &
academia members by using the platform of National
Productivity Organization (NPO) and spread the knowledge
about “Total Quality Management” between the participants
and to aware the participants about modern techniques of
TQM. More than 53 participants from different industries and
from different areas of Sukkur Sindh attended the training
course. Mr. Muhammad Aslam Pathan, Secretary General of
Sukkur Chamber of Commerce & Industry, was invited by NPO
in this training program, Mr. Muhammad Aslam Pathan
appreciated the NPO team for organizing the training jointly for
educational & industrial sector. Mr. Pathan said that in future

In-House Training Courses at OGDCL Tando Alam Oil Field Hyderabad Sindh.
The National Productivity Organization (NPO), Ministry of Industries & Production, Government of Pakistan in Collaboration with
Multan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) Multan conducted training on “Effective Managerial and Leadership Skills”.
The objective of this training course was to embed the essence of good leadership qualities and educating about how to be a Leader
& Manager with good communication skills, excellent team building capacity and the ability to bring the best out of everybody. In this
session several managerial and soft skills of how to be a good manager and a leader were delivered. Real Time cases were shared
among the participants. They were distributed among different groups and competed with each other. This is acted like an ice
breaking and in this way participants were also involved in training and this was appreciated by the representatives of different
organizations. Training was conducted by the trainer “Mr. Muhammad Ahmed”.
After the session lunch was offered to the participants by NPO. 45 participants attended the training and all of them appreciated and
requested to conduct these types of trainings in future.
The program shall develop understanding, vis-à-vis the
fruitfulness of Value stream Mapping and its succeeding
implementation in Pakistan. The latest practices in Lean
Production System shall help us to develop the capacity of
individuals (participants from various economic sectors). The
program will be very favorable to develop a pool of
professionals which are directly or indirectly linked with the
production & shop floor (Plant Managers, Production Heads,
and Consultants etc.) which are equipped with established
Japanese productivity tools.
This program is aimed to enlighten the participants to achieve
Achieving Quality, Zero Defects, Zero Accidents, Zero
Wastages, Cost Reduction, Reduced Maintenance Cost, and
Zero Machine Losses. Dr. Lee who is the Senior Research
Manager for IDC Manufacturing Insights Asia/Pacific, based in
Singapore was the resource speaker and expert of this session.
In his role, William is responsible for analyzing manufacturing
best practices through the use of IT, the priorities and deployment
strategies of manufacturing firms, and emerging ICT trends and
opportunities in the sector to the sector.
Value Stream Mapping for Achieving Lean Production System
.The core competencies developed under this program shall
enable the participants to better mechanize the organizational
resources, Increased organizational productivity overall
operational effectiveness ,Initiate the synergy of world's best
productivity tools to emerge as an effectively organized and
strategically productive organization, more efficient and quality
conscious in their respective fields The Program shall enable
their Company/ Organization, to achieve zero defects and zero
accidents at their production floors.

Capacity Building in house program on Statistical Process Control
NPO organized an in house capacity building on the topic of
“Statistical Process Control” at English Biscuit Manufacturers
(EBM), Karachi a leading name of Pakistan in biscuit
manufacturers. It was a series of trainings which was organized
for two groups of employees of EBM. The sessions were not
limited to class rooms activities only but a shop floor follow up
exercises were also a mandatory part of the capacity building
program. Participants were later trained on Minitab software
for using the Statistical tools. Nabeel Afzal, Management
Associate of NPO, Regional Office Karachi solely organized
and conducted the all sessions of the programs. The program
received an excellent feedback from not only the participants
but the concerned departmental heads, to whom the
participants report in their routine duties. This program was
spread over the months of October and November 2012.
A Focus on ISO – 5000 Energy Management Systems & Clean Development Mechanism
In this program about 50 participants from various Industries like steel, Textile, Engineering, Pulp & Paper, Cement, Telecom etc attended the session. This program was conduc ted th rough an In te rna t i ona l Expe r t , Mr. G. Subramanyam, Director Siri Energy & Carbon Advisory Services, Hyderabad, India. Mr. Aftab from NPO, Pakistan
introduced participants about NPO activities and back ground
of ISO-50001 and linkage of NPO with APO, Japan. Mr G.
Subramanyam, APO expert Spoke about the training program
objectives and said there is 15-20% potential for energy
conservation in Pakistan in almost all sectors like, Industry,
Transport, Agriculture and Domestic. He also made a
presentation on climate change and how to save energy in
various sectors and Government initiatives to save energy.
As part of 2 weeks training program, there were 11 days of class
room sessions and one day filed visit to local Industries. The
topics covered during the program focused on Need for Energy
Conservation ,Electrical Load Management, Energy Efficiency
in Motors, Energy Efficiency in Transformers, Energy Efficiency in
Pumps, Energy Efficiency in Fans, Energy Conservation
Compressed Air, Energy Efficiency in HVAC, Energy Efficiency
in cooling Towers, Energy Efficiency in Boilers, Energy Efficiency
in Steam Distribution, Energy Efficiency in Power Generation /
DG sets/Gas engines, Energy Management Systems (EnMS) –
ISO 50001,Implementation of Energy Efficiency Projects
through ESCO model, Clean Development Mechanism (CDM),
Case Studies ,Industrial Visit to Textile ( Garments) & Steel
Rolling Mill. Based on the various studies it estimate that there is
potential savings to the tune of 15 to 20% in all the sectors like
industry, domestic, agriculture, Municipalities, Transport &
commercial buildings. So by the implementation of ISO 50001
Energy Management Systems, we can release energy saving
and reduce our carbon emissions. Some of the projects can also
be taken up under Clean Development Mechanism and we can
get additional revenues. The NPO Management has established
centre of energy and environment management- CEEM and
have highly professional foreign trained team to address the
energy crisis through energy management services.
