I was in attendanceat one of the area’smost innovative ande n t e r t a i n i n genterprise’s lastperformance of the2010 season: AirPirates Radio Theater. It was a thrill to seethat producer, co-writer and director, PaulEllis, has steered this superb company oflive actors from its modest beginnings in asmall restaurant in Monroe, circa 2007, tolast month’s full house in the Pavilion atLycian Centre.

Kudos to the entire company. We lookfoward to the 2011 season which will beginin late March.

by Derek LeetThe concepts of an inquisition and

inquisitorial procedure lie deep in the rootsof world history. Inquisitions were usedduring the decline of the Roman Empireuntil the Spanish Inquisition's decline in theearly 1800s. An inquisition can be run byboth civil and church authorities in order toroot out “non-believers” from a nation or forpolitical purposes.

The Spanish Inquisition, 1478-1834, wasone of the most deadly inquisitions inhistory. Around the 1540s the SpanishInquisition turned its fire on the Protestantsin Spain in an attempt to further “unify” thenation. Set against this backdrop, Verdi’sDon Carlos is a dramatic opera based on theplay by Friedrich Schiller.

The story is based on conflicts in the lifeof Carlos, Princeof Asturias( 1 5 4 5 - 1 5 6 8 )after hisb e t r o t h e dElisabeth ofValois wasmarried insteadto his fatherPhilip II ofSpain as part ofthe peace treatyending Spain’s

war with Italy. It depicts how the Inquisitionwas used for political purposes, rather thanreligious, in this instance.

Some opera enthusiasts, mostly thosewho prefer male voices I suspect, claim DonCarlos is Verdi’s greatest “grand” opera, asopposed to Aida, Trovatore, Forza, et al.

Go see it and decide for yourself.Don Carlos Live from the Met in HD is at

Sullivan County Community College,December 11 at12:30pm, starring somethe finest male singing-actors in the world today, including RobertoAlagna in the title role,Simon Keenlyside,

Ferruccio Furlanetto, and EricHalvarson. The distaff side includesMaria Poplavskaya and Anna Smirnova.

Snuggled into a hand-crafted bowlcontaining a multitude of tempting reasonsto visit the historic village of Montgomeryis one claiming the existence of a pot shop.Nancy Michaels' Pottery, located at 70Union St., has drawn the attention andadmiration of many visitors to thischarming village. Her creative designs inthe production of utilitarian pieces result inan inspired product, reflecting visualsatisfaction and practicality

Her pottery is a ceramic formed byinorganic materials that are subjected tohigh temperatures in a process known askiln firing. Clay is a common materialsubjected to manual manipulationproviding a functional and/or decorative

vessel or object. Generally, various ceramics are producedin potteries and are sold in "potshops." As an interesting aside,"pot shop," as in this article, is aphrase frequently used as anattention gathering device.Nancy refers to her labor as"throwing pots," a catchy termthat refers to the manualmanipulation of clay on aspinning surface. The work of apotter, if not the oldestprofession, is certainly one to beconsidered as possibly theoldest art form.

Nancy received her training at theBostree Studio and Gallery in Sugar Loaf.A worthy note is a portion of her workreplicates designs and purposes prevalent in19th century American pottery, whichcomplements Nancy's antique shop, OldeTowne Antiques, that shares the premiseson which the pottery is located.

Nancy's creations will be for sale andexhibit at the Di Bello Gallery, 3 WallkillAve., Montgomery through the month ofDecember. Di Bello Gallery is adjacent tothe Montgomery Village Museum, theOrange County Firefighters' Museum andHistoric Ward's Bridge Inn.

..........Montgomery..........by J A. Di Bello

Whether singing the lyrics or hummingthe melody, the image, taste, smell and feelof the iconic Pizza can cause one to smile, drool or even fall in love. Folk lore and thecinema reflect the dubious notion that thenotorious crooner Dean Martin wasprimarily responsible for the popularity ofwhat has become an American staple.

Turn right, turn left, go straight ahead.Every town, city and village in America hasthose special culinary wizards whoseinspired labor is to make the ultimate, irresistible Pizza Pie. Some roll them; somecaress them. Others throw them spinningthrough the air with the skill and timing ofa trained high-wire artist.

The Village of Montgomery, known tomany as the "Culinary Capital of OrangeCounty" is an active participant in thisphenomenon. Located equidistant betweenMiddletown and Newburgh, MontgomeryVillage boasts of three establishments, eachnoted, respected and admired for its Pizza.

But what kind of pizza is it? There's NewYork Pizza, Chicago Pizza, CaliforniaPizza, Mexican Pizza, Sicilian Pizza,Grilled Pizza, Deep-Fried Pizza, NeapolitanPizza and to preserve what's remains ofethnic origins: Focaccia!

"Wikipedia" claims there's an

organization and geographic area dedicatedto the "true, unadulterated, original Middle-Eastern, Mediterranian Pizza." L'Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana(True Neapolitan Pizza Association),founded in 1984 recognizes only theMarinara and Margherita pizzas and has setspecific rules that must be followed for anauthentic Neapolitan pizza. Although notthe subject here, a Margherita Pizza boaststhe colors of the Italian flag: green, whiteand red. Each represented respectively byfresh basil, mozzarella cheese and tomatosauce. The Marinara Pizza is traditionalpizza shell, flat bread tastefullycamouflaged with tomato, oregano, garlicand lots of extra virgin olive oil.

Montgomery Village pizza shops arestrategically located to insure that no onepasses without being seduced by signageclaiming with justifiable pride the glories ofthe ultimate, irresistible Pizza Pie. Enteringthe village from the south on Union St., onefinds Mike's Deli, specializing in take-outsand located adjacent to MontgomeryElementary School. Accommodating andgregarious owners Neil Diana andMaryAnn Sabatino-Kline are members ofa family long associated with fine Italianrestaurants. Neil reports that the BuffaloChicken Pizza is their most popular take-out. Interestingly, neither was acquainted

with the preservation society mentionedabove.

In the center of the village, corner ofClinton and Union, is a recent and friendlyarrival to the village restaurant scene:Gino's Pizzeria and Family Restaurant, offering take-outs and an appealing, extensive eat-in menu. Owner TomEndrizzi has included the traditionalMargherita Pizza on his menu. The mostrequested eat-in pizza at Gino's is theChicken-Bacon-Ranch combination, whilethe ever appealing, traditional Neapolitanpizza with cheese and tomato sauce remainsa popular take-out. As with the otherestablishments, the Neapolitan PizzaAssociation was an unfamiliar term.

Entering the village from the east requiresyour presence in the neighborhood ofTarantella's Pizza Alley. Although notexactly in an alley, this comfortablerestaurant has a neighborhood atmospherethat welcomes those seeking the ultimatepizza treat. Owners Richard and JaredKurisko, are personable and offer a varietyof specialties. Neither Richard nor brotherJared was familiar with the True NeapolitanPizza Association, but in a small on-the-premises library, wisely designed to keepchildren occupied, there was a short storybook describing the contest and origin of theMargherita Pizza (green, white and red).

The most popular take-out pizza atTarantella's: The Buffalo Chicken Pizza. Most popular eat-in: Cheeseburger-French-Fry-Deep-Dish Pizza. Wow!!

No matter how you slice it - pun intended- Montgomery's culinary notoriety islegitimate and features a variety ofexperiences designed to delight the mostdiscriminating of palates. .... that's l'amore.

The Farmer's Child is a free versenarrative composed by Robert H. Score. It stands on its own merits as a prologue ina greater work, Ghost Whistle, a lamentrecalling the events of the Great War and itsinfluence on an Orange County family, specifically a family residing inMontgomery.

As with numerous Montgomery families, the Scores were touched by the ravages ofwar and The Ghost Whistle recognizes thetragedies as well as the heroics of soldiersand civilians during the most trying oftimes.

The author will present his work orally at

the Di Bello Gallery on December 5 at4:30pm. Further, it remains the belief ofScore and the Gallery that poetry and proseshould provide stimuli to the mind as wellas the soul. Thus, an oral interpretationopens another path to that end.

Score is a native son of Montgomery, wellversed in the agriculture that was the lifeblood of his community. He has been ableto record much of those days with nostalgicpen and ink drawings and his workembellishes many prestigious homes in andaround Orange County. His art work, celebrating the village's bicentennial iscurrently on display at the Di Bello Gallery,3 Wallkill Ave., Montgomery.

Prologue

The Farmer's ChildI was, Years and years ago,A farmer's child.I lived on a farmOn a one lane dirt roadIn the middle of nowhereWith my Mom and Dad, My two older brothers, and my

grandparents, Ma and Harry........Yea... that's rightMy best friend Harry!!

They said I was too light for heavy workAnd too heavy for light work So.........I stuck close to Harry And listened to all his tales............. of

years and years ago.Sometimes he had to go and doThe work I was either too light or too

heavy to do.AndThat's when I drifted off.OffTo my magical world:A land of rolling hills,

Fermenting swamps,Lush pastures,Frog infested ponds,And, of course, a woodlot,A life -giving woodlot. This enchanted land of mine,Was defined byWandering wagon roads

Now lined by stonewall fences.

I was king!King of it all!A kingdom of cornfields!Pastures and hayfields! My castle:The barn, As grand as the Taj !Where I sat on a throne of golden bales,My kingdom, you must know,Stretched from dawn to places far...Far into a darkened night.

For I had before me hay bales, hounds, And crazy little kittens. I flew recklessly through fields of

grainAnd sailed ships on streams and ponds,And I wished upon a Harvest MoonTo forever be A farmer's child.

RReedd EEfftt GGaalllleerryyNew Paltz artist Kevin Cook is just one

of over 25 artists featured inthe Red Eft Gallery Art is AGift exhibit.

“I believe landscapepainting to be a vital andintegral expression in thecontemporary art scene. It is inspired by thepast, yet defined by present environmentalrealities,” Cook writes.

“Essentially a realist, I incorporate strongundercurrents of romanticism into my work.In the romantic tradition, I seek to give mylandscapes deep emotional meaning, manipulating them into emotional dreamworlds through subdued brushwork anddiffused light.

“Although my subjects are largely

familiar local scenes, they serve merely as aframework or vehicle forexpressing the spiritualtruths I seek. The works arelargely unpopulated, quiet, still, emphasizing an innerpeace or the spirit of each

place. Aspects of the work indicateinspiration, eternal life, the passage of time, and the process of nature. I am inspired bynineteenth century views on romanticismand communion with nature, and by thework of John Constable, Frederic Churchand Martin Johnson Heade.”

Shamanic Drum CircleThis type of circle tends to center around

Native American Cultural Drums and rattlesbut primarily focuses on the spiritual ratherthan the musical aspects of the culture.

Shamanic drumming is generally simpleand repetitive, often considered as a form ofprayer or method of trance induction, ratherthan as music or entertainment. During ashamanic trance or shamanic journey, theshaman uses the steady beat of the drum asa "lifeline" to find the way back to the worldof ordinary consciousness.

MUSE Brings Handel HomeTo Benefit Opera Company

of the Highlands

by Vicki Botta

Many have heard Handel's Messiah andeven those who haven't are at least familiarwith its “Hallelujah Chorus”. What mostpeople don't know is that Handel madeseveral different versions to accommodatethe ability of those who sang it.

In fact, two of the eight selections to beperformed by the MUSE - early musicchamber ensemble - are versions performedin 1742 in Dublin in a special performance.According to Jonathan Dobin, Director ofMUSE and an aficionado of Handel, Handelwas invited by the Charitable Music Societyof Dublin to help raise money for flood andfamine victims after an arctic freeze theprevious year caused floods in the springthat ruined crops.

For the Dublin performance, the arias,"But Who May Abide" and "RejoiceGreatly" were in different forms than thosewe are familiar with today. Some of theactual Dublin versions were eliminated andreplaced by other songs and choruses.According to Dobin, the basic structure ofthe work remained as in the 1741 versionbut a lot of arias were changed or transposedor completely rewritten.

For example, later on in London, Handeldiscarded the original version of "But WhoMay Abide" (as sung in the concert) andcreated the version, which became morefamous and is standard today, for a castratonamed Guadagni. The first version waswritten for bass and didn't have a realprestissimo section. It was also lesstheatrical.

Dobin says that Handel finished writingMessiah, his most famous oratorio, afterbeing inspired by his good friend CharlesJennen's libretto. Handel was at Jennen'shome in 1741 retreating from depressionthat he suffered after a personal financialcrisis.

MUSE was founded by Dobin in 1982 forthe purpose of performing music of theRenaissance, Baroque and Early AmericanPeriods (through early 19th century) withvocal solos and ensembles, instrumentalmusic and live period dance performances. It concertized extensively throughout NYCand the tri-state area for nearly 10 years, garnering grants for pioneeringreconstructions of early American musicand dance.

The group halted performances in 1992after Jonathan Dobin recovered from a nearfatal accident. After moving to Newburghhis "new hometown" in 2006, Jonathan wasencouraged to start MUSE again. He hasassembled an ensemble of some of theHudson Valley's finest singers, instrumentalists and dancers for MUSE'sfirst concert in nearly 20 years.

This is MUSE's first concert as a501(c)(3) organization and secondfundraiser of the fall season for the OperaCompany of the Highlands, ClaudiaCummings director, which will receive all

of the money generated by ticket sales. In the MUSE performance Jeremy

Moore is the baritone who will sing "ButWho May Abide" while soprano soloistSuzanne Clune will sing "Rejoice Greatly"in its original jig-like style. Otherperformers include: Jennifer Ponzoni,David Mason, Michelle Jacobsen, IngridNarken, Anthony Cinelli and Dobin.

The MUSE chamber ensemble iscomprised of well-known area musicians,Lynn Cunningham, Donna Kushner,Piotr Kargul, Nancy Wegrzyn, GordonShacklett and Andrew Benson, with Dobinat the harpsichord. Also performing aredance solists Dorothy Olsson, BarbaraKidney, and Andrew Dalton.

Additionally, this concert is beingperformed in conjunction with TheHistorical Society of Greater Newburghand the Highlands' annual "CandlelightTour" as well as its host church, one ofNewburgh's oldest architectural gems,Calvary Presbyterian Church, PastorSteven Reulke,

MUSE has plans for the upcomingseasons to perform John Blow's opera Venusand Adonis, Heinrich Schutz's "ChristmasStory" as well as "The Nest of Love" (musicof love from the Renaissance, Baroque andColonial Periods) as well as other uniqueprograms. Contributions to MUSE are taxdeductible and will be listed accordingly inall future programs. Those wishing todonate, request an ad in the concert programor with other questions can call Jonathan at845-392-0492 or [email protected].

The concert will take place on Dec. 12that 3:00pm at the Calvary PresbyterianChurch in Newburgh, 120 South Street, corner Grand Street.

G. F. Handel J. N. DobinSuzanne Clune and Jeremy Moore are

two of the eight MUSE soloists.
