I used to go to New York's MargaretMead Film Festival in its early days, whenthe films were so awful that they were fun.The last time I went, the Festival had risento mediocrity and was just dull. I doubt ifI'll go back until the films get good. LastOctober, for the first time, I went toMilford's Black Bear Film Festival(BBFF). I don't know if the BBFF hasevolved from dreadful to so-so and on up,but I can say that the films I saw there weresuperb.

This was Milford's tenth BBFF, and forthe first time the feature-length films weren'tshown at the Milford Theater. That belovedbut decrepit venue was being renovated, sopart of the Festival had to relocate toDelaware Valley High School inMatamoras. Roomy and comfortable, theschool housed not only the films but also amakeshift restaurant, BBFF souvenirs, silent auction items and this year's crop ofpainted bear sculptures.

But of course the films were the mainattraction. Nine feature-length films wereshown from Saturday morning to Sundayafternoon. A film festival is the place to beif you like movies but are a little tired ofvampires and violence. The BBFF wasshort on both. Instead, it offered films abouta Philadelphia mosaic artist whose work istidier than his life; an Ecuadoran tribefighting the oil company that has pollutedits ancestral lands; two immigrants trying tomake it in Manhattan's garment district; anEast Texan inventor in China; a CanadianInuit, stricken with TB and sent to a hospitalin Quebec where no one speaks hislanguage; two children abandoned by theirsingle mother; an elderly farmer strugglingto reclaim his land; the Hindu goddess Sita;and Jack Kerouac.

This is not the usual Hollywood fare, andthe films didn't have the usual Hollywoodfinish. One of them, Sita Sings the Blues, was animated and produced on a homecomputer. That Evening Sun, starring HalHolbrook, was probably the mostmainstream in its look, but not in its themeor its characters. Farmer Abner Meechamescapes from the retirement home to whichhis son has sent him and returns to his farm, only to find that his son has rented it to hisworst enemy. Meecham's bitterness destroysa family, nearly kills him, and forces him toface some unattractive facts about himself. What he learns in the end is to face old agewith resignation and dignity.

The rest of the Festival took place, as

usual, in Milford. Grey Towers presentedthe ENVIROFEST, films about the friendsand enemies of our beleaguered planet. The Columns offered an entertainingmiscellany, including that classic TwilightZone shocker, To Serve Man. The TomQuick hosted the opening-night party aswell as the Film Salon. This was a series ofshorts, punctuated with talks by local film-makers. Held in the restaurant's back room, the Salon offered pretty good popcorn anddelicious little films. My favorite wasabout the fate of imaginary friends whosehumans have outgrown them. This is whatfilm shorts are all about: whimsical ideasthat won't stand up to full-length treatment.

2010This year, the whole festival will be back

home in Milford. It runs from October 8 to10. Between films, you'll have plenty todo. Milford is blessed with goodrestaurants, sophisticated shops andhandsome tree-lined streets that inviteleisurely walks. If you're coming from outof town, consider arriving a day early andleaving a day later.

And don’t forget to visit CANVASfriends at the art and photography galleries.

Check the website,www.blackbearfilm.com, for films, datesand times. I'll see you there.

Black Bear FIlm Festival

In 2008 Gloria Krause was one of 29local heroes nominated by Sullivan Countyresidents for their service tocommunity...courage, generosity andperseverance and included in Erica Hart'striptych, Heroic Spirits Shine in SullivanCounty.

Gloria “transitioned” in September, leaving a void in the arts community. As aresult of her work, much creativity wasinitially brought to a then virtually ruralarea of the world. Her legacy lives on, nolonger just in Narrowsburg, but all overSullivan County, continued by ElaineGiguere and the Delaware Valley ArtsAlliance.

I am wondering if a kind of pride can be"felt" in spirit. A "good" kind, becuase Ican imagine Gloria smiling now as shelooks back on her life.

Thank you, Gloria, for the music, the art,the poetry, the theater. We are grateful.

Marge Champion, of the famous Margeand Gower Champion dancing duo, willbe appearing on the Main Theatre Stageon Saturday, Oct. 9 for showings ofmovie clips of their famous dances, hernew documentary and an interview.

Gloria’s Legacy Lives OnThe Paul West Trio opens the Tusten

Theatre fall season in Narrowsburg onSaturday, October 2,playing works ofGillespie, Parker, andEllington.

The season willcontinue on October

16 with Music of Our Time, a concert byDelaware Valley Chamber Orchestrafeaturing a newly commissioned work byDavid Tcimpidis, and October 30 withfolkrock duo Mike and Ruthy.

When opera was created, it was availableto its admirers "live" for their viewing andlistening pleasures. Then came recordingsand people could listen to opera on theirphonographs. This was followed by operasingers performing on radio enablingpeople to hear a live performance at home. And then came televised performances withlive opera both heard and seen at home.

The advantages and disadvantages of allof the above should be obvious to any operaobserver/listener.

After watching the Live from the Met inHD series at Sullivan County CommunityCollege I began to realize that this was anew medium that offered something noneof the above could offer. No live in-theatreperformance, no reading a libretto alongwith listening to a recording, no watchinga live performance on TV at home with itsdistractions and tiny subtitles offers whatLive in HD can: Opera as Drama.

I have always held to the uncommonbelief that opera was first and foremost"theatre". After all, if the situations andcharacters are not believeable, why watch?Stay home and listen to a recording. 99%of the world scoffs at that perception anddismisses me with "everyone knows operais music first and foremost. Period!"

With the conservatory training availableto singers today, most opera singers are nowsinging-actors. We see that with Live inHD as we multi-task ourselves - watchthem close up while our ears digest themusic, watch them and digest the musicwhile the words flash across the screen, beaware of the music juxtaposed with thetitles as we watch the actors and hear themsing. (And why not multi-task ourselvessince opera is a collaboration ofmultifaceted crafts?)

I realized that, as a medium, Live in HDwas its own "message" at an “HDcast” ofAida. During a vocal passage, a paean toher lover, Aida was singing in a major key.But when the words of a negative commentflashed across the supertitles screen I hearda measure written in a minor key. CertainlyVerdi agrees with me. For him to write thatway, the drama surely took precedence overthe music. It dictated to him what tocompose, rather than have him go on witha “happy” major-key melody.

I had always wondered why the third act

of La Bohemebored me "live",Thanks to anHDcast whilereading thee x c e l l e n t l ytranslated Englishsupertitles, I was

entranced with the underlying behavorialaspects in Boheme's third act and it was nolonger tedious to watch as drama.

And neither was Eugene Onegin, anopera I never liked "live" or on recordings. But the superb acting and excellent titlesmade the opera "work" for me dramatically. And because of that, it worked musicallytoo for the first time.

My realization really had its strongestreaction with last season's Turandot.Anyone can write a melody. GiacomoPuccini, Jerome Kern, Hank Williams orthe girl next door. Carried a bit farther, anyone who writes classical music canwrite an aria. And in the case of Turandotthere is a lovely aria titled Tu che di gel seicinta, sung by “Liu” I have seen Turandotmany times but it was only through themagic of Live in HD that I came to realizethat the genius of Puccini is not in that aria.Talent, yes. Genius, no. His genius lies inthe 10 minutes or so before the aria forwhich he composed gloriously beautifuldramatic (“non-aria”) music. Because I wasmulti-tasking I saw that we, the audience, weren’t the only ones observing Liu, andtherein lies the magic of Live in HD.

It has always seemed a contrivedmoment when the tenor kisses the icyprincess Turandot and she instantly "melts".It never worked for me. This time I wasable to notice Turandot watching andlistening to Liu. I realized that HEREPuccini and his librettists planted the seedof the "melting of Turandot". You could seethe energy of the loving words beinguttered by Liu in that 10 minute sectionaffecting Turandot and preparing her for theforthcoming kiss. Her surrender thenbecame beliveable and gave the sacrifice ofLiu’s life even more poignancy than before. It is all there in the drama, thanks to HD.

Walk into almost any school lobby todayand it's likely to be fairly institutional andplain-looking, with bare walls, cold floorsand harsh lighting. But walk into the lobbyat the Livingston Manor Central School(LMCS), and it's like time-travelling to acentury past. One look skyward, to the leftand to the right of the grand marble centralstaircases, and it's clear why. (see photo)

Six panoramic murals that portray autopian ideal of America reside there, threeon each side of the ornate balustrades, surrounded by enormous, carved-oak wallborders, soaring high above the groundfloor. The wallpaper murals, titled "Vuesd'Amerique du Nord," were designed in1834 by Jean-Julien Deltil, and block-printed by the renowned Zuber et Ciewallpaper company in France. Closeinspection of the works reveal a typical19th-century European view of America asan ideal and perfect society, where all racesand classes of people were imagined to beequal and free.

Art enthusiast and Weekend ofChamber Music artistic director JudithPearce was struck by the imposing panelswhen she first encountered them a fewyears ago, and by how unusual it seemed to

answer to the Great Depression, and itwasn't unusual for an agency designed tobring hope and renewal to America tointegrate the arts into its projects. Theschool and its Zuber panels opened to thepublic in 1939, more than 100 years afterthe idealistic "Views of North America"murals were created.

Taking inspiration from the historicpanels, a unique exhibition and concertseries is slated to begin opening day of TheCatskill Art Society's (CAS) open callexhibition, Utopia: the Real and the Idealin the Pursuit of Social Democracy. Worksin response to the Zuber panels by 13contemporary artists were chosen for theexhibition.

In creating the concert series, dubbedMusic in America: 1780 to 2010, Pearcesaid, "We agreed that our musicalinterpretation of "Utopia" should be in the

context of music as a significant element oflife as it was back then. Looking at theexperience of the Europeans who cameover to America in the late 18th and 19thcenturies, music was crucial to their idea ofa utopian society."

WCM presents two 'moveable concerts'at 3pm October 16 and November 6, aptlybeginning with early music under the Zuberpanels in the school lobby, and then movingto the nearby CAS for contemporary music, surrounded by new works at the gallery.

On October 16, music for the first half inthe school lobby presents Haydn, Corelli,Pleyel and Francis Hopkinson, who, in hisdedication of his Seven Songs to GeorgeWashington in 1788, called himself "thefirst Native of the United States who haswritten a Musical Composition."

The second half of the concert at CASpresents the world premiere of Americancomposer Andrew Waggoner's "5Singles." Of the music composed for theWCM and the CAS, Waggoner says "Thejumping-off point for each [miniature] wasa different painting in the series of varied, sometimes hallucinatory, alwaysimaginative responses to the wonderfulZuber wall panels in the Livingston Manorschool. I love the vitality of these pieces, their unfettered re-imaginings of theoriginals." This part of the program alsoincludes music by Steve Reich and HenryCowell. Flutist Judith Pearce, violinistSunghae Anna Lim, oboist Matt Sullivan, cellist Caroline Stinson and harpsichordistKenneth Hamrick perform. BaritoneAnthony Turner joins them in November.

A la Carte: How about some buttermilkfried chicken. a burger, pasta, burrito, soupwith bagel chips, and there’s always a kid’smenu and delicious food for carnivores, vegetarians, vegans and for those withgluten, dairy and other food allergies, andwhenever possible, they serve locally

grown and organic foods.Potluck: Daily specials, of course. This writer personally recommends the

Cafe and its outdoor (season permitting)sidewalk tables. Just by accident one day Ihappened by for lunch, ordered aBLT/avocado wrap and enjoyed the freshlyprepared food. Bacon never tasted so good.

Mmmmmm. But, I’ll miss the dailyscones. I live too far away.
