This stint was awarded as a scholarship by the World Bank through UPM for subspecialty training.

Here I was immersed in hepatobiliary, upper gastrointestinal and laparoscopic surgery as a

subspeciality with hands-on experience in aspects of hepatobiliary surgery (elective liver resections,

laparoscopic cholecystectomy, Whipple’s procedure for pancreatic and ampullary cancer, excision of

choledochal cyst, open drainage of complicated pancreatic pseudocysts, liver transplantation both in

donor liver harvesting as well as in transplantation into recipients and in their subsequent follow-up

with invitation to the weekly meetings of the FMC transplantation unit comprising of surgeons,

hepatologists, hepatic anaesthetists and other members of the multidisciplinary team); upper GI

surgery (oesophagectomy including thoracoscopically-assisted and open Ivor-Lewis oesophagectomy,

gastrectomy including one for the rare ‘phlegmonous gastritis’, various upper gastrointestinal

laparoscopic work including gastric banding, fundoplication, paraoesophageal hernia reduction,

cardiomyotomy and splenectomy) both in the public hospital as well as in the private sector, plus being

on active call for emergency general surgical cases.

I was involved in laboratory research principly into the modulatory effects of segmental electrical field

stimulation before and following outright transection of the common bile duct to the sphincter of Oddi

in the Australian possum which culminated in poster presentations at the annual Australian

Neurodigestive Society conference in January 2003 and the International Society for Autonomic

Neuroscience (ISAN) in Calgary, Canada in July 2003. I was also involved in the weekly academic

scientific research meetings and participated at presentations.

Interests

All aspects of general surgery, especially gastrointestinal (upper GI & Colorectal) and laparoscopic–

oriented surgery having had the pleasure of working with surgeons with a keen interest in laparoscopic

surgery.

I maintain interest in Trauma surgery, Endocrine surgery (the thyroid in particular), Breast surgery

(breast cancer as well as updates on breast reconstructive surgery) and Plastic surgery (including

burns) having done considerable stints and had operative and management experience in these

specialities.

It is my hope to be able to contribute greatly to the development and future output and services of

this Surgical Unit at UPM.

1 Laboratory research as an undergraduate in part fulfillment of B.Med.Sci.(Hons) at the

University of Nottingham Medical School on a Haematology project entitled ‘Interleukin-4 (IL-

4) causes a synergistic growth of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) blast cells in vitro’

culminating in an oral presentation at the British Society of Haematologists conference in

Cambridge, 1991
