16. RESEARCH INTERESTS
Environmental governance, politics, institutions, planning and management: Institutional
theories on environmental planning and management. Distribution of power. Governance and the
use of policy instruments in natural resource management. Relationships between public and
private actors. Legitimacy and efficiency in governance. Responses to instruments. Conflicts and
conflict resolution. Focus on protected area management, biodiversity conservation and
climate change.
Environment and development; Local people’s dependence upon environmental resources, and
conflicts and resolution between local people and protected areas.

Agricultural, resource and development economics: Development economics, and how to
organize macro-economic structures to enhance both economic growth, agricultural development
and environmental concerns. Economic and social incentives structures and institutions research to
promote sustainable development.
Peasant household economics; production, poverty and environment: Theories of adaptation;
why farmers adapt they way they do; material and ideational constraints and patterns of thought -
combining economic and sociological/anthropological approaches. Participatory approaches to rural
development and to incentive selection. Cost- benefit and project, program and policy analysis.
Dependence upon environmental incomes. Local heterogeneity and conflicts over resource use.
Philosophy of science/interdisciplinarity: Communication across science borders; How can
economists benefit from other social sciences in their theoretical work and in modeling works?
What role does institutional economics play in this field? What is the nature of communication and
lack of such between economists, anthropologists, agronomists and ecologists? How to design
education programmes to improve interdisciplinarity.
Ph.D.thesis ; Farmers and Fertilizers- a Study of Adaptation and Response to Price Change
among Norwegian Farmers: The dissertation takes issue with problems in Norwegian agriculture on
how farmers adapt to changes in their frame conditions. The thesis includes a comparison of
economic versus pedagogic incentives to reduce problems of excess Nitrogen fertilizer use.
