Dear Biathlon Friends

Itisofteninthemosttenderyearsofayoungathlete’s sporting career that an outstanding talent canbespottedmakingabreakthrough.Theyouthandjunioryearsinbiathlonareaperiodinwhichayoungathletedoesn’tyetknowthedepthofhisorhertalent,doesn’tyetreallyknowhowtomanagetheabundanceofenergy,doesn’tyetreallyknowhow to treat sporting triumphs and disasters. In a sport with such delicate relationships between speed andendurance,andabsolutefocusandgrit,findinga winning balance is an even more striking achie-vement.

TheIBUsetoneofitsmanyfar-seeingmilestonesinthe 2001/2002 season when it extended what was thenknownonlyastheIBUJuniorWorldChampions-hipstotheIBUYouth/JuniorWorldChampionshipsinRidnaun-ValRidanna,Italy.Sincethen,wehaveseenmanyoutstandingbiathletesburstontothescene,the best of them winning multiple medals and moving straight into the highest echelons of the world’s biathlon. We have learnt that the best of the bestofthemoftenstartchangingbiathlonhistoryweekbyweekastheyaddexperiencetotheirnaturalabilityandworkethic.

TherehavebeenIBUYouth/JuniorWorldChampi-onshipswherenotoneindividualbutagroupofverytalented biathletes emerged at the same time. It was in Obertilliach, Austria in 2012/2013 that Laura

Dahlmeier won medals in all the competitions sheentered, all gold medals except one, a feat she would later repeat at the IBU World Championships in Hochfilzen,Austriainthe2016/2017season.ItwasalsoinObertilliachthatthetopfiveinthesprintcompetitionhappenedtobethemightytalentedandnowlegendaryJTBoeofNorway,AlexanderLoginovand Maxim Tsvetkov of Russia, Vettle Sjaastad ChristiansenofNorwayandQuentinFillon-Maillet of France: all of them went on to win competitions at the BMW IBU World Cup level and win medals on thegrandestofbiathlon’sstages.Morerecently,wewitnessed the rapid ascent of Hanna Oeberg of Sweden, who won junior sprint and pursuit gold medalsattheIBUYouth/JuniorWorldChampions-hips in Cheile Gradistei, Romania in the 2015/2016 season. She went on to win gold in the individual competitionatthePyeongchang2018OlympicWinter Games and at the IBU World Championships 2019, a feat no woman has ever accomplished before.

ItisbecauseofterrificstorieslikethesethatkeepwritingthemselvesthattheIBUYouth/JuniorWorldChampionships are such interesting and valuable events. WährenddesAufenthaltsinderSchweizmüssenGewehre und Munition voreinander getrennt und sicheraufbewahrtwerden.GemässSchweizerRechtist es nicht erlaubt, die Gewehre über Nacht in den Wachskabinenzulassen.

WhilestayinginSwitzerland,riflesmustbekeptin a safe place separate to the ammunition in the accommodation according to Swiss law. It is not allowedtoleaveanyriflesinthewaxcabinsduringnight.

Das Depot für den Schlüssel der Wachskabinen ist CHF50.–/EUR50.–.(EswirdnachderSchlüsselrück-gabezurückerstattet).DerSchlüsselfürdieWachs- kabinen kann im Wettkampfbüro abgeholt und retourniert werden. Die Teams sind selber für ihre Ausrüstung in den Container verantwortlich. Die Container müssen immer richtig abgeschlossen, sowie leer und sauber hinterlassen werden. Rückga-be bis 2.
