Week beginning 18th May

Lesson 1 - LO: To understand the rate at which ice melts.

This is an investigation to find the effect of adding salt to ice.

Many countries have very harsh winters, resulting in frozen roads. This investigation looks at why salt is used in these situations.

What do you think the yellow plastic bin labelled ‘salt’ is for? Draw/write you prediction.

Carry out an investigation to test the effects of salt on your ice cubes. This is best set up at the start of the day and then checked on at regular intervals throughout the day.

Lesson 1 - LO: To understand the rate at which ice melts.

Chose how to write up your investigation.

You could:

• Write it up as an investigation under headings (prediction, equipment, investigation steps, diagram, results, conclusion)

• Take photographs at regular intervals and label them.

• Create a vlog of your investigation and share with us on twitter.

Lesson 1 - LO: To understand the rate at which ice melts.

Extension

Find out if other substances (e.g. sugar, flour, sand, pepper) speed up the melting of ice in a similar way to salt.

Research the advantages and disadvantages of using these substances on the road.

Lesson 2 – LO: To plan and construct.

• An igloo is a shelter made from blocks of snow placed on top of each other, often in the shape of a dome. They were used in winter as temporary shelters by hunters when they were away from their regular homes.

• Snow is used because the air pockets trapped in it make it an insulator.

• Find out more about igloos here https://kids.kiddle.co/Igloo

Lesson 2 – LO: To plan and construct.

• Watch how Inuit build their igloos here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-x5QOSqP3E

• What do you notice about how the igloo is made?

• What are the advantages of an igloo?

Lesson 2 – LO: To plan and construct.

• Plan how you will construct your igloo. There are lots of ideas here https://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Model-Igloo.

• Build your igloo and share a picture with us on twitter or via email.

Lesson 3 – Science L.O. To investigate living things and their environments

• Go into your garden or for a walk. • You could go to the police club, down to the river

or Roding Valley Nature Reserve(Grange Farm Lane, Chigwell, IG7 6DP)

• Collect (one) or take photos of seeds/seed cases from flowers , shrubs and trees.

• You can draw what you have found. • Talk to an adult. How would they be dispersed? • You could organise them into groups by dispersal

techniques. • You could create a branching diagram.

Lesson 3 – Science L.O. To investigate living things and their environments

Try making your own wind dispersal seed.

• How well does it work?

• Predict how far it will fly.

• Measure how far it flies.

• Try 3 times-record your distances.

What is the furthest it flew?

Would a smaller or larger one be more effective?

Try it out and explain your reasons

helicopter Sycamore Seed Helicopter Materials and Equipment • Scissors • Helicopter template • Colouring pencils • A paper clip

Step 1 Print the templates on the next slide or copy them out onto paper. Using the colouring pencils, colour in your helicopter. Step 2 Cut along the solid lines on the template. Step 3 Fold along the dotted lines. Step 4 Attach a paper clip to the bottom of the helicopter.
