Flying Start The focus for Flying Start this week was, ‘Who looks after us?’ Miss O’Neill read the story ‘Time for Bed’ by Mem Fox and students completed an activity that required them to match the baby animals to the adult. This activity demonstrated students’ fine motor ability as they were asked to cut out the pictures and glue them next to the correct adult animal. Students were excited to see that the rain had stayed away for the morning as they were able to have a play on the equipment outside. We hope to see you all again next Monday at Flying Start!

Fred Reid Visiting Performance Last Friday Fred Reid, an Aboriginal performer, visited Crookwell Public School. Fred shared his extensive knowledge and experience of his culture through a variety of dances, musical instruments and artefacts. Fred and his son involved the girls in a dance about black emus and the boys participated in a dance about kangaroos. Students enjoyed the opportunity to practise speaking words from the traditional language and to ask questions to gain a deeper understanding of their culture. This was a brilliant performance to wrap up our NAIDOC celebrations!

Term 3 Class Captains Last Friday our newly inducted Term 3 Class Captains received their badges at a special assembly. The proud parents, grandparents and family members presented their children with their badges for the role they will fill for the duration of the term. Class Captains are responsible for assisting their class teacher and peers as well as taking and collecting the lunch order baskets to the canteen, taking notes and the class roll to the office and any messages the class teacher may need to send around the school. Providing a leadership opportunity from a young age builds responsibility, respect and self-confidence, congratulations Class Captains, we know you will do a fabulous job.

The Term 3 Class Captains, proudly wearing their new

badges, are ready and willing to fulfil their duties.

Year 6 Taster Lessons at Crookwell High School Transition from primary to high school requires students to move to a complex and differently structured learning environment. The teachers at Crookwell High School want to make this transition for your child as smooth and successful as possible by offering them the opportunity to experience the high school environment through participation in a series of taster lessons this term with the first one scheduled for next week.

We have scheduled the following dates:

Wednesday, 10th

August Wednesday, 24

th August

Monday, 5th

September

The students will participate in lessons in a variety of key learning areas and attend our school assembly. Students should arrive at Crookwell High School ready to commence these lessons at 8.55am. They will share recess at the high school and head back to school at 11.15am.

Students will need to wear full winter school uniform and take their pencil case, writing paper and food for recess. Canteen facilities are available for students wishing to purchase recess.

The high school has organised a bus to leave Crookwell Public School at 8:45am to take us to the high school for each taster lesson. On each of these days students are to meet Mr Grey and Mr Whittington at school ready for the bus to take us to Crookwell High School in readiness for the day’s lessons which commences at 8.55am. The bus will then bring us back to school at 11:15am when the taster lesson mornings conclude except for the last day, Monday 5

th September, when we will return at 11:30am after

assembly.

If your child will be making their own way to Crookwell High School we need to be notified in writing the day prior to the taster lessons. Students who make their own way to CHS are to meet under the shade sails at the high school ready for the taster lessons to commence.

We believe this will be a worthwhile and positive experience for the students which will give them greater confidence as they move into high school in 2017.

If you have any questions please feel free to call Mr Brian Hudson, Crookwell High School Principal, on 48321421.

If you would like your child to participate in Taster Lessons at Crookwell High School on Wednesday 10

Library Visit This week saw the first infants class experience the local library. Students walked down to the Crookwell Public Library and enjoyed an interesting book read by librarian Michaela Olde. After the book students joined in a fun activity based on the book. Students borrowed books from the library to share back at school before continuing literacy based activities based on the shared experience.

Crookwell Town librarian Michaela Olde reads to 1/2K during

their visit.

Literacy Challenge Recipients The first wave of literacy challenge recipients have now received their amazing new badges that they can wear proudly in the knowledge that they accepted the challenge and completed it. The challenge requires students to read all 17 books that are beautifully depicted on the library stairs. Once this has been signed off by parents the students then receive their Literacy Challenge badge at assembly. We hope we are able to present more badges this term and next, so keep reading!

Our Literacy Challenge recipients so far are (back row)

Georja Seaman, Georgie Lloyd, Imogen Roberts and (front row) Charlotte Stephenson, Jesse Croker and Mikeely Gray.

From little things big things grow! We lead very busy lives which can cause us to forget that our families, especially our children, need that daily positive connection with us. Maggie Dent suggests little things such as winking, smiling, high fives, thumbs up, rough and tumble, reading bedtime stories in their beds and small secret gestures of kindness towards our children are just a few simple things we can do as parents and teachers to brighten not only a child’s day but our own as well.

Book Fair 2016 This week, being Education Week, Crookwell Public School once again hosted their annual Book Fair in the library. We had an overwhelming response to this year’s Book Fair, with parents, grandparents, carers and staff lined up as the doors opened, to make their purchases from a wide range of books, posters and stationery. The final amount raised is yet to be confirmed, but it is safe to say that the commission earned from this year’s Book Fair will be made available to both the library and the rest of the school, enabling the purchase of more quality reading material for all students to read and enjoy. Congratulations and an enormous thank you to everyone who purchased books and stationery at the 2016 Library Book Fair. Your generous support of our school, once again is greatly appreciated.

Thank you also to the kind parents and Year 6 students who generously gave up their time to work in the library, thus ensuring the smooth operation of this year’s Book Fair.

Important changes to Crookwell Public School’s Uniform Guidelines We have an amazing school community that embraces our school uniform. As staff we rarely, if ever, have to send a note home to ask that a child wears our school uniform rather than other clothing and we thank you so much for this!

To ensure our school uniform continues to evoke a sense of pride and play an important role in ensuring the focus of our school, which is learning and growing in a safe, comfortable and rewarding environment, here are our new school uniform guidelines which was voted and decided upon at the last P&C meeting, Monday 1

st August.

It is imperative these guidelines are followed each school day and particularly when on excursions, ANZAC Day march, school assemblies and performances to foster school pride and a sense of belonging.

Please note, the following items are being discontinued and are currently on sale at a reduced price. These items will be completely phased out by 2018. Girls stretched bootleg pants, fleecy cuff tracksuit pants, straight leg tracksuit pants, girls box pleat shorts, sports shorts and girls sport skort.

A unisex navy short will be introduced for sporting uniform in the coming months.

Infants Sport – Rock & Water Infants’ students are enjoying a tri-focus of wellbeing for sport this term.

Each week students rotate between: ‘Rock & Water’ with Miss Logan, ‘Cosmic Yoga’ with Mrs Davies and ‘Creative Catching and Throwing’ with Miss O’Neill and Miss Bowden.

During ‘Rock & Water’ sessions students are learning to be strong physically, mentally, socially and emotionally. This week we practised a new position that keeps the body balanced and strong. Once we were stable in this position we learnt how to shield and jab, all whilst looking after our partner. Our discussions were well considered when reflecting about when we would use these kinds of skills.

Congratulations to every sport group for your outstanding maturity at Rock & Water!

Miss Logan

Darcie Osborne and Ada Dunn bow and say “I will respect

you and I will look after you’.

Ben Webster is strong in his stance whilst providing a

focussed target for Jack Haynes to practise his cross and

jab.

• has taken place annually at Qantas Credit Union Arena (formerly known as the Sydney Entertainment Centre) since 1984 and in 2016 has relocated to Qudos Bank Arena.

• 2016 will be the biggest year yet! Usually the show involves approximately 3,600 students from over 400 NSW public schools; in 2016 the show will involve close to 6,000 students!

Tell Them From Me student feedback survey I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey aims to help improve student learning outcomes and measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

You may remember that our students also participated in a Tell Them From Me student survey in Term 1 this year. Asking students to complete the survey twice in one year allows us to identify trends in student responses as well as track engagement and motivation across the school year.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents

The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help improve how they do things at school.

I want to assure you that the survey is strictly confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 22 August and 21 October. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.

A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey is being sent home with students. If you do not want

your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by Friday 19

th August. Copies of the form and FAQs

are available from the website above.

Partners in Learning parent feedback survey This term, our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.

Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

The survey is conducted entirely online at home or on public computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be conducted between 22 August and 21 October. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary; however, your responses are very much appreciated.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents or feel free to contact the school on 48 321 213 and speak with Mr Whittington about any concerns/queries regarding the survey.

Welcome to Crookwell Public School’s Literary Challenge! We invite all interested students to partake in our literary challenge. As you would be aware, our library stairs have been transformed into book spines of popular children books. The challenge for students is to read every book whose title is listed on the stairs to receive a special award before they exit primary school. As you complete reading a book have your parents or teachers sign that you have read that particular book and once you have read the entire list of books below, please present this sheet to Mr Atfield for a prize.
