Please Make an Appointment The strong, positive relationship that exists between the staff of Crookwell Public School and our school’s families is appreciated and valued. The opportunity for parents and teachers to openly and honestly discuss aspects of a child’s education is welcomed and of vital importance.

However, as teachers are extremely busy of a morning preparing for the day ahead and often have commitments after school, I urge parents to phone the school on 48321213 to make an appointment to meet with a teacher. This will ensure teachers can fully focus on the issue/concern raised by the parent and allow teachers to address commitments and preparations uninterrupted.

Your cooperation with this request is greatly appreciated.

To Keep Track of Your Child’s Belongings You can: use a permanent laundry marker to label clothes, hats

and shoes, or sew or iron on personalised labels

go through your child’s bag with them each night

check that labels haven’t faded with washing

enquire at the office when something is misplaced and they will direct you to the school’s lost property area.

Year 6 Peer Support leaders are ready to start! Last Thursday and Friday, students in Year 6 were trained as Peer Support leaders under the guidance of 8 peer leaders from Crookwell High School. Students thoroughly enjoyed the wide range of fun-filled activities presented by the Crookwell High School students who did a terrific job of preparing Year 6 students for the task ahead of them. Peer Support training for Year 6 students continued throughout Friday night with a ‘sleepover’ in the school hall. Students enjoyed an evening meal of pizza and participated in a variety of Peer Support games and activities before arranging their sleeping bags and swags in the hall and, after supper, bedding down to watch a movie.

The following morning they were greeted by the sounds and smells of a cooked breakfast prepared by Mr Whittington and Mr and Mrs Cunningham, before being picked up by their parents.

Year 6 spoke enthusiastically about this great experience and are now ready to embark on the Peer Support program at Crookwell Public School that will run each Friday for approximately ten weeks.

Thank you to Crookwell High and the Year 10 peer leaders for helping to facilitate this great program. Thanks also to Mrs Hayes, Mr Whittington and Mr Atfield; the two day training program, and most importantly the ‘sleepover’, could not have run without your help and support. Also a big thankyou to Mr and Mrs Cunningham for helping cook our breakfast. (Mrs Atfield)

Sianabel Anderson and Abigail Gray are struggling to keep their foothold on a ‘stepping stone’ during a team building

Peer Support activity. Victa Woods, Ellie Whittington, Charlie Colley, Charles Butler and Billy Speer are also

photographed.

Billy Speer, Emma Robertson, Charles Butler, Tyler Smith (who appears to be afraid of mossies), Skye Garnham and Sophie Ward are preparing for bed although they do not look particularly tired.

Sophie Watson, and Charlotte Selmes are all smiles after

competing in a team challenge involving dressing for a movie part using only newspaper and sticky tape.

Skye Garnham, Betsy Willis, Emma Robertson, Sianabel Anderson, Sophie Ward, Hanna Hunt and Ellie Whittington

enjoy a barbeque breakfast of bacon, hash browns and toast.

No Hat …… Play In The Shade Australia has the highest incidence of skin cancer in the world with 140,000 new cases and 1,000 deaths recorded annually. The increasing occurrence of skin cancer in Australia is a matter of concern with skin cancers accounting for 80% of all new cancers diagnosed each year.

The A.C.T. and surrounding region has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in Australia. The major cause of skin cancer is exposure to ultraviolet radiation over many years, particularly during childhood and adolescence. Even if exposure does not cause obvious sunburn, damage still occurs and accumulates over the years.

To help protect students from over exposure to the sun during Term 1, the school’s policy of ‘No Hat…Play in the Shade,’ will be strictly enforced. Please encourage your child to wear their school hat at school to help keep them sun safe.

N.B. Adjustable microfibre school hats are available from the uniform shop at a cost of $15.00.

Year 5 Overnight Excursion What a whirlwind experience! From viewing a session in Parliament House, to discovering the resting place of Phar Lap’s heart. From testing stamina and speed at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), to being respectful and reverent at the Australian War Memorial. The Year 5 overnight excursion most certainly was a hit!

Last Thursday, 33 Year 5 students, and an eager Mr Roberts, Mr Whittington and Mrs Thorpe headed off on a journey of discovery and team building. Canberra opened its heart to the Crookwell kids! They visited Parliament House, the National Museum of Australia, The National Gallery of Australia, the Arboretum, Mount Stromlo Observatory, the Australian Institute of Sport and the War Memorial. Due to some unfavourable weather conditions, the students (and teachers) were treated to a game of ten pin bowling, where the excitement and energy was contagious.

As per usual, the students of Crookwell Public School represented themselves respectfully. Each and every one of them should be proud of themselves.

The weather didn’t allow us to have a group shot in front of Parliament House, so we tried the next best thing!

Montanna was excited to see the preserved heart of Phar Lap at the National Museum.

It was interesting to see how each student took

something different away from the same piece of art.

The weather at the Arboretum wasn’t ideal, but the view sure

was.

Liam, making the most of the bad weather

Year 5 Overnight Excursion continued …..

Johnny and Erik in a chin up competition at the AIS.

Who’s going to win?

Looking lovely in pink were Ruby, Alyssa and Elizabeth at the Year 5 overnight excursion.

One tour group heard war stories about the Hill family, three brothers fighting for their nation, one to never return. Tegan

placed a poppy beside Jonny Hill’s name on the Wall of Remembrance.

A picture says a thousand words. We will remember them.

Emily was a ‘force to be reckoned with’ when she went ten-pin bowling on the overnight excursion.

Harmony Day Celebrations Harmony Day is coming up once again. The message of Harmony Day is ‘everyone belongs.’ The day celebrates cultural diversity and fosters respect and tolerance for everyone who calls Australia home.

This year we will be celebrating Harmony Day on Wednesday 25th of March. On this day students will participate in a variety of workshops aimed at promoting acceptance and understanding of different cultures and traditions.

Students are invited to wear something orange on this day as this colour traditionally signifies social communications and meaningful conversations, as well as the encouragement of mutual respect.

Some interesting conversation starters from the Harmony Day website include;

• nearly half (49 per cent) of Australians were born

overseas or have at least one parent who was

• we identify with over 300 ancestries

• since 1945, more than 7.5 million people have

migrated to Australia

• 85% of Australians agree multiculturalism has been

good for Australia

• apart from English, the most common languages

spoken in Australia are Mandarin, Arabic,

Cantonese, Vietnamese, Italian, Greek,

Tagalog/Filipino, Hindi, Spanish and Punjabi

• more than 70 Indigenous languages are spoken in

Australia

GCOPS Choir Rehearsal More than 50 primary students travelled into Goulburn East Public School last Wednesday for an introduction to the songs they will be singing in this year’s GCOPS concert. School rehearsals will start in the coming weeks, we hope families enjoy being entertained as your children rehearse at home. It was a pleasure for teachers Margi Hayes, Ellen Miners and SLSO Jayde Della to take such an enthusiastic and well behaved group of students away for the day.

Girls just want to have fun, just ask Evelyn and Tegan.

Jim, Levi and Bastian enjoy a break from singing.

Billy, Charlie, Maddy, Jack, Sophie, Keeley and Charles are

ready to sing.

Singing is better when you do it with your friends, just ask Brax and Dustin.

This year’s Year 6 keep up the tradition of sitting at the back

of the bus.

Hanna and Charlotte enjoy relaxing after a big day.

GCOPS Choir Rehearsal continued ….

Charlie and Alex sing and look like angels!

William and Ben chill out on the way home.

What a great bunch of kids! Late arrival / Early departure If your child arrives at school after school has commenced, leaves prior to school ending or leaves for a period during the school day, it is necessary to call at the school office and obtain a late arrival or early departure slip.

Your compliance will assist us to keep your child safe at school.

Thank you for your cooperation in this regard.

Squirrel Glider Survivor Show This week students from Kindergarten to Year 6 were treated to an interactive show which taught us ways we can look after and care for squirrel gliders and their environment. We followed the tale of a little squirrel glider called Peita, who faced the challenge of surviving a night in the forest. We met many characters, both friendly and not so friendly, that lived in or near her home. Thank you to Juliet Scrine and the Eaton Gorge Theatre Company for treating our students to this educational performance.

Ryann Ross and Koa Pick have a taste of sap, one

of the squirrel gliders favourite foods.

The goanna was hungry and thought Caden Locke

would make for a delicious meal!

Some of our students enjoyed taking on very important

roles in the performance. Yours in Public Education,
