Creative Music Hub Open Day - Saturday 6th November 2021

On Saturday 6 November 2021 from 10am, Bournemouth and Poole College is throwing open its doors for a musical open day to publicise the launch of the new Creative Music Hub (CMH), a new centre that will host a range of weekly and monthly musical activities for young people. Have a go at an instrument, play along with the Dorset Youth Symphony Orchestra, try your hand at jazz improvisation, get song-writing and performance tips for your band, try your hand at music production or register for our new creative ensemble!

Entry is FREE for all sessions, but you do need to register for the following:

Session overview DDORSET YOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA (DYSO) conducted by John Randall: Open rehearsal 10.15 – 11.30am Bring your own instrument and play along with the orchestra

Standard: Grade 3 or equivalent on the following: Violin, Viola, Cello, Double bass, Trumpet, Cornet, French Horn, Trombone, Tuba, Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Orchestral Percussion.

DDYSO is an intermediate level symphony orchestra led by experienced orchestral specialists and DMS team members Johnathan Randall and Dianne Ely. Moving forward, the group will offer the chance to receive high-quality orchestral coaching and play alongside likeminded young musicians if you join. There will also be weekly starter groups for lower levels in brass, strings and woodwind(?) starting on 7 November, to begin the pipeline of young musicians into the orchestra.

As this is a As this is a Symphony orchestra, we can’t accommodate all types of instrument on the open day without planning, there will however be other activities at the CMH that you can take part in. If you play other instruments and would like to try the or-chestra, please email [email protected] and we can try and make sure there are suitable parts for you.

BANDCAMP with Jack Grace: two sessions: attend either or both 10.15 – 12.00; 1.15 – 2.45pm Open to existing bands or musicians/vocalists (Aged 13+) wanting to be in a band, who can play/sing to a reasonable standard. Bring your own instrument (drums and keys supplied)

Do Do you play/sing in a band and want some tips on how to improve your performance or song writing? Jack Grace is a Bourne-mouth – based professional musician and songwriter who performs regularly across the south west. At these introductory ses-sions, he’ll be taking you through how to compose a new song. Moving forward, the Bandcamp sessions will offer a fortnightly space for young people, bands, and ensembles to collaborate with their peers, access 11 mentoring from professional musicians, develop their practice skills, access rehearsal space, and advance their knowledge of the recording process.

MUSICAL IN A FLASH with Sarah Kemp: two sessions, attend either or both: 10.15 – 12.00; 1.15 – 2.45pm Ever wanted to write and perform in your own musical? Come and meet Sarah to find out more about this exciting offer for fans of musical theatre; we want to hear your ideas and sign you up to this unique collaborative monthly session.

Standard: Students studying (or opting for) GCSE/BTEC or A-Level music, drama, theatre studies or dance with an interest in production Ages: 14- 18

LLaunching 28th November (then meeting monthly), Musical in a Flash, will bring together students from across the performing arts (music, theatre studies and drama) to coproduce and develop a musical from scratch. You’ll devise the plot as a team and then choose songs that match the storyline (think Mamma Mia!). The first series of workshops will culminate on 6th March with a very special one-off performance in the Jellico Theatre at the College.

JAZZ/BLUES IMPROVISATION with the TERRY QUINNEY QUARTET: two sessions, attend either or both 10.15 – 11.30; 11.45 – 1.00pm Bring your instrument and have a go at creating your own tunes backed by a professional jazz quartet Standard: open to any instrumentalist or vocalist who has been playing 2-3 years, Age 8+

TTerry leads the Dorset Youth Jazz Orchestra and this fantastic professional jazz quartet, who all teach too, playing across the south of England. This session will give any musician the chance to have a go at improvising backed by some top ‘jazzers’ and educators, giving tips on performance and improvisation. Moving forward, there will be a chance to join the Dorset Youth Jazz Orchestra and a Starter Jazz Ensemble, who meet monthly; and we also hope to establish a freer, funky improvisation ensemble in 2022

CREATIVE ENSEMBLE with Jason Thornton and Bath Philharmonia Education Team: one session 11.45pm – 1pm Join the Dorset Symphony Youth Orchestra to create a new piece of music from scratch in an hour and 15 mins! Standard: open to any instrumentalist or vocalist, all ages and standards (bring your own instrument) JJason and the Bath Phil team, are at the forefront of innovative music education and inclusion, working with of young people from all backgrounds across the south west. Their sessions can include participants of any standard and is based on learning by ear. This session will give a taste of the new monthly CREATIVE ENSEMBLE we will launch in 2022, supported by Youth Music, which will adopt a similar model, led by the same team, incorporating a wide range of standards, instruments, genres, and abili-ties. Attendees at all other sessions most welcome to take part.

Creative Music Hub Open Day - Saturday 6th November 2021MUSIC PRODUCTION Taster Session with Shawn Keys: two sessions 10.15-11.30 and 1.15-2.30pm Standard: Aged 11+ but no previous experience necessary (equipment provided) ShShawn is a music production and tech specialist. In this session, you will learn the basics of creating a piece of music using soft-ware – no previous experience necessary. You may not consider yourself a musician, but you might do after this session! An in-troduction to music sequencing using free browser based digital audio workstation that anyone with Wi-Fi and a device can access. Learn how to manipulate sounds and samples and edit them to develop a composition. There’ll be future sessions at CMH to expand your knowledge and develop your sound.

POP-UP PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE with Paul Williams: two sessions 10.15-11.30 and 1.15-2.30pm In less than an hour learn how to play as part of a percussion ensemble and register to join ‘Sound the Drum’ the new CMH per-cussion offer. Open to all but particularly those interested in percussion be that kit, orchestral or samba. You’ll have the chance to try your hand on a range of instruments including Timpani’s, Glocks, Xylophones, Vibraphone, and Marimba. Moving forward, students will learn the skills necessary to allow them to feed into the other CMH ensembles (brass, mixed wind) as well as performing in their own percussion ensemble. OTHER OPPORTUNITIES TRY AN INSTRUMENT with staff from Dorset Music Service: throughout the day Standard: no previous experience required: all young people welcome aged 7-18 Have you wanted to have a go an instrument but never had the chance? A selection of instruments will be available throughout the day which you can come along and try out. Who knows, it might just whet your appetite to take your musical learning to the next level at school and beyond.

VVISITING MUSIC TEACHERS AND OTHER INTERESTED MUSICIANS: networking session 12.45pm – 1.30pm Are you a music educator or instrumental teacher from the area? We’d love to talk to you about new musical opportunities we are developing across Dorset and BCP, as well as ways in which we can work together to enable more musical provision for young people. You’re invited to check out some of the activities at the Hub between 12 – 2pm and then have a cup of tea and a chat with the teams from the Dorset and BCP Hub’s between 12.45 -1.30pm
