Basic Scissors Skills
A progression of cu=ng forward, curved and angled lines.
1. Cut to the dot – teaches children to aim scissors as they cut. Teach the students to “cut to the dot”. This is important for learning to cut angles, as students learn to cut forward, and turn on the dot.

to “cut towards the dot” 2. No dots: Child uses advanced scissors skills, with good bilateral hand skills and
the ability to turn and place scissors to cut complex angles around a path.

Fine Motor: -‐ Develop separa[on of the two sides of the hand to have good stability with the 4th/5th fingers (ulnar stabiliza[on) and manipula[on with the thumb, index and 3rd fingers (radial manipula[on) using scissors. -‐ Improve eye hand coordina[on to cut forward, curved and angled lines. -‐ Develop bilateral hand use to hold and cut with scissors -‐ Develop a supinated forearm/ “thumbs up” paVern with scissors skills -‐ Cut simple and complex paths with scissors (forward, curved, angled, complex)
