ASSET Summer Teacher Workshops For Social Studies Teachers July 22, 2011 July 26, 2011 Cornell University Ithaca, New York The ASSET Program at Cornell University is looking for innovative and interdisciplinary-minded Social Studies teachers to examine the complex relationship between Democracy and Science. The program provides classroom simulations and role-playing exercises designed to stimulate independent, critical thinking, and to foster vigorous classroom discourse and debate by encouraging students to critically evaluate the complex relationship between science and society. Funded by the National Institute of Health, this 5 year program while aimed primarily at Government, Economics and AP classes is adaptable to many other Social Studies classes. The first workshop on July 22, 2011 and a repeat workshop on July 26, 2011 are held at the Cornell University campus in Ithaca, NY. Both workshops are from 8:30 AM until 1:OO PM. Then enjoy a Cornell summer afternoon. All teachers will receive: Travel Stipend with all meals provided during the workshop. In-service credit. Access to the ASSET Lending Library program. The ASSET Program at Cornell University is looking for innovative and interdisciplinary-minded Social Studies teachers to examine the complex relationship between Democracy and Science. The program provides classroom simulations and role-playing exercises designed to stimulate independent, critical thinking, and to foster vigorous classroom discourse and debate by encouraging students to critically evaluate the complex relationship between science and society.

AP Classes: The DinnerBased on the book, Banquet at Delmonicos, students will recreate a seminal dinner in which corporate and religious figures such as Andrew Carnegie and Henry Ward Beecher meet to encourage the teaching of evolution in schools.

The Consensus ConferenceThis simulation, based on a widely used real world technique allows students to assume the roles of governmental decision makers dealing with funding and regulation of scientific research.
