EducationExisting school infrastructure is a challenge to upgrade and maintain given rapid changes in technology and the infrastructure required to support it in facilities that were built decades before today’s teaching methods were developed. Facilities designed to be occupied nine months per year are now operated year-round. Milhouse utilizes value engineering to optimize learning environments in terms of safety, functionality, and comfort, while reducing facilities’ life cycle operating costs.

Milhouse’s MEP and Fire Protection engineers have designed solutions for schools from kindergarten to the university level. Our staff includes LEED accredited professionals who specialize in delivering green solutions that are both cost- and comfort-effective. Our team uses a collaborative approach to integrate the design and engineering of infrastructure systems with the technology components required for modern education. Tools include 3D modelling with collision analysis, BIM coordination, and energy modelling. The result is school environments are flexible, efficient, sustainable, and reliable.

Sample clients include Northwestern University; the University of Chicago; Chicago Public Schools and the Bellwood School District in Illinois; as well as Prince George’s County School District in Maryland.

Dunne Technology Academy ModernizationChicago, Illinois

Chicago Public Schools (CPS), through the Public Building Commission (PBC), engaged FGM Architects to design an addition for the school as well as a renovation for the existing building. Milhouse was retained to provide mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection design services associated with the project. The project was fast-tracked, allowing the design to be completed within a four-month period over the winter, in time for the renovation project to be bid and awarded, as well as for the renovation work to be completed before school resumed in the fall. The LEED certified addition includes a new electrical service, sprinkler system, rooftop units for ventilation, a science lab, a sophisticated technology classroom, and a gymnasium.

The renovation work included rehabbing the existing unit ventilators; upgrading the fire alarm system; modifying the cold and hot water services; and adding a hood to the existing kitchen. The compressed construction schedule called for the renovation to be complete by mid-August and for the addition, which includes an elevator, to be ready for use in December. Due to funding limitations that arose during the time of the bid, the original bid package had to be broken into two bid documents with the second package back on the street within three weeks of the original bid date. The project required that Milhouse collaborate closely with public agencies and the prime consultant to coordinate the work and complete the project on time.

University of Illinois College of Engineering Buildings Energy Performance Urbana, Illinois

In the last 10 years, the University of Illinois has climbed from the bottom of the Big Ten to the top in energy reduction; reducing its consumption. Since 2008, the university has seen a 28 percent reduction in energy usage in campus buildings. These results were achieved with efforts including Retro-Commissioning, energy performance contracting, lighting retrofits, and energy grants. The University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign conducted an energy performance audit at its Engineering Campus. Buildings on the Engineering Campus include the Engineering Sciences Building, the Superconductivity Center, and the Loomis Laboratory. The energy performance contract developed a comprehensive set of energy efficiency, renewable energy, and distributed generation measures that guarantee savings.

Milhouse was selected to provide electrical engineering design services for the three engineering buildings, as well as mechanical design services for Loomis Laboratory. The design includes the replacement of air handling units, replacement of supply fans, and replacement of existing fume hoods exhaust fans.

Center for Urban AgricultureChicago, Illinois

The Center for Urban Agriculture at Chicago State University is a research, teaching, and office space used by the faculty and students of Chicago State University to expand their understanding and practice low impact, environmentally friendly food production in an urban setting. This facility houses a large- scale Aquaponics system, as well as some smaller resource-reuse systems. The Aquaponics system produces fish for sale to local restaurants, as well as a number of vegetables and herbs. The system uses the enriched water from the fish growing tanks to fertilize the plants being grown, then uses the non-saleable portions of the plants to feed to the fish, with some added products. The facility is located in an old warehouse west of the main campus area. Since its opening, this warehouse has experienced only minor upgrades. This project provides a new, state-of-the-art workplace for staff and students. The new space is used as a workplace and as a showcase where the school can bring groups from around the city to educate them on the systems and help them see the possibilities for urban food production.

Milhouse is the Engineer of Record on this project and is working with 4240 Architecture, Inc., who serves as the Architect of Record. Milhouse is responsible for all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) and fire protection design work for the build-out of the new facility. Milhouse’s scope included the design of new heating, ventilation, air conditioning, plumbing, electrical power, and lighting systems, as well as security, data, fire alarm, protection, and building controls systems to replace the outdated systems. All of the systems have been designed to promote energy efficiency and energy reuse where possible. The use of energy recovery on the heating and cooling systems, as well as low flow plumbing fixtures and LED lighting fixtures, helps to reduce the building’s overall carbon footprint.

A.N. Pritzker Elementary SchoolChicago, Illinois

The A.N. Pritzker Elementary School commissioned this project to modernize and replace its existing mechanical systems. Milhouse provided mechanical, electrical, and architectural design services for this Chicago Public Schools (CPS) project. Work included the replacement of lighting throughout all classrooms and office areas; modernization of the school’s fire alarm and communications systems; and the addition of a new fuel-fired generator to provide emergency power to critical life-safety equipment.

The mechanical upgrades included the installation of a controls system that provides detailed monitoring and control of the building’s new and existing mechanical systems. The project also required that the building’s existing facilities be reworked to comply with ADA requirements for accessible restrooms, auditorium seating, and door openers. New flooring and paint were also added to improve the aesthetics of classrooms and administrative offices.
