Milhouse has built a reputation for delivering reliable, competitive engineering and design services to natural gas providers nationwide. Our team began its work in the natural gas industry in 2012 and now serves a diverse roster of utility clients, including Atlanta Gas Light (AGL) Resources, Nicor Gas, Peoples Gas, NIPSCO, and Ameren.

Gas utilities serve more than 68 million residential customers and more than 5 million commercial enterprises. Natural gas is delivered to customers through a 2.4-million mile underground pipeline system that includes 2.1 million miles of local utility distribution pipes and 300,000 miles of transmission lines. With many of these systems aging and in need of replacement, the management of system integrity in the natural gas industry is more important now than ever.

Based on our breadth and depth of experience, Milhouse is a natural partner for gas utilities. Our engineers understand gas industry standards and each client’s specific design criteria. We are dedicated to working with our clients and the local municipalities which they serve, to create compliant and cost-effective design solutions. Our expertise in a range of complementary infrastructure practices, such as environmental, tunnels, highways, and water/wastewater, means we can assemble diverse teams to help solve project challenges that might sometimes fall outside the routine for gas utilities.

Our specialties include design solutions for multi-year programs to remove and replace cast iron and bare steel main from the existing gas distribution system, as well as designs for relocation and new business. In 2015, we provided design solutions for the replacement of over 50 miles of distribution gas main, doubling our capacity from the previous year. Our team offers experience in high- and low pressure systems; uprating systems for pressure improvements; horizontal and directional drilling; vault/tin replacement; meter set design; and public improvement projects.

Highlighted Projects

Nicor Gas Engineering ServicesChicago, Illinois

Nicor Gas, the largest subsidiary of AGL Resources, is an energy company headquartered in Naperville, Illinois. Founded in1954, Nicor Gas serves more than 2 million customers in 641 communities. Its service territory encompasses most of the northern third of Illinois, excluding the city of Chicago. Nicor has 32,000 miles (51,000 km) of pipelines, with an annual sendout exceeding 5,000 billion cubic feet (BCF) and a designed peak day delivery of 5.2 BCF.

Milhouse began work with Nicor Gas in 2013 to provide issued for construction drawings for various gas main replacement projects. A majority of these projects are for Nicor’s Investing in Illinois program, which facilitates the replacement of old cast iron and bare steel main. Milhouse has completed a cumulative total of 70+ miles of main replacement projects for Nicor. Milhouse evaluates designs for public improvement projects that may require gas main relocations. The public improvement projects require Milhouse to work with other design firms to resolve potential gas main conflicts, thus saving Nicor money. In addition, Milhouse performs engineering services for pressure improvement projects, vault repair/replacement projects, and large main horizontal directional drilling projects, as well as field work for electronic locates.

Ameren Exposed 12-Inch Steel Transmission Main ReplacementMount Sterling, Illinois

Based in Collinsville, Illinois, Ameren Illinois is a regulated electric and gas delivery company in the business of energy distribution. Ameren’s parent company, the Ameren Corporation, is based in St. Louis, Missouri. Ameren Illinois’s service territory spans 43,700 square miles, approximately three-quarters of the state. Every day, Ameren delivers to its 806,000 natural gas customers in more than 1,2000 communities throughout central and southern Illinois. The Ameren complex delivery includes approximately 45,400 miles of distribution pipeline; 18,000 miles of natural gas transmission and distribution main; and 12 underground natural gas storage fields.

Milhouse began working with Ameren in 2015 to provide engineering design of an approximately 800-linear-foot (LF) horizontal directional drilling (HDD) design to replace an exposed 12-inch steel gas transmission line south of U.S. Route 24 near Mt. Sterling, Illinois.

Milhouse’s scope on this project includes:

• HDD plan and profile preparation• Piping and mechanical layout• Drawings and details• Engineering cost estimates• Hydrotest calculations• Construction site maintenance, including a four-inch bypass line

Peoples Gas Main Replacement, West Beverly and West Morgan ParkChicago, Illinois

For more than 165 years, Peoples Gas has provided natural gas service to the City of Chicago. Currently delivering services to 828,000 customers in the City, Peoples Gas is dedicated to upgrading its infrastructure of approximately 568 miles of pipeline. Milhouse has been retained by Peoples Gas to provide engineering design services for the relocation of the utility’s aging infrastructure.

Milhouse was selected to provide engineering services to Peoples Gas in Chicago’s West Beverly and West Morgan Park neighborhoods. The two projects total approximately 62,000 linear feet (LF) of medium pressure main replacement, and include the installation of 2-inch to 18-inch plastic main. The projects are spilt into 10 different construction phases for submission to the Chicago Office of Underground Coordination.

Design plans developed by Milhouse included:

• Installation sheets with profiles• Retirement, restoration, and maintenance of traffic (MOT) sheets• Design for an 18-inch, jack-and-bore railroad crossing• Deep shore excavation• Pipe insertion• Directional bore and open cut utility crossings

Nicor Gas Gathering SystemVarious Locations, Illinois

Nicor Gas, the largest subsidiary of AGL Resources, is an energy company headquartered in Naperville, Illinois. In 1954, the first underground storage facility for natural gas, called an aquifer, was developed in Illinois. Today, Nicor Gas operates 7 storage fields throughout Illinois, with a combined storage capacity of 150 billion cubic feet. This allows Nicor to purchase gas when it is likely to be less expensive. Natural gas is injected into the aquifers during the summer months, and withdrawn during peak winter months.

Milhouse is responsible for providing design services for the replacement of the gathering lines systems. These systems collect natural gas from the wellheads and transport it to the dehydration centers, before it enters the transmission lines. The gathering lines must be piggable by an in-line inspection tool, and therefore include the replacement of pig launchers and receivers, drip cabinets, and outlet valves. Milhouse is also responsible for designing the replacement of two well vessel heads.

Services provided by Milhouse include:

• Plans for demolition of the existing well head• Design of new piping from the well wing valve to the downstream valve• Design of a new water knockout vessel• Design of a new shelter, concrete foundation, and space heating systems
