D. Thomas Stearns AICP, PP, ASLA, LEED AP

Tom Stearns has over 30 years of experience as a land planner and landscape architect. He was a Studio Principal with Hillier in Princeton, NJ where he worked for 16 years and was Director of Hillier’s Land Planning Studio.

Mr. Stearns understands how project planning and design must respond to market conditions, physical and environmental constraints, and financial and operational objectives, while not compromising the design integrity. Tom’s success over the years has been based on listening to his clients, being responsive and meeting their expectations for design, approvals, schedule and budget.

His background includes a range of commercial, institutional and residential project types. Commercial projects include corporate and investment office, research & development, industrial, retail and mixed-use. Institutional projects include health care, higher education, K-12 and religious. He has worked nationally and internationally for some of the most respected developers, corporations and institutions.

Mr. Stearns is a licensed professional planner and landscape architect. Through his extensive experience, he is familiar with federal, state and local land use regulations and knows what it takes to get a project through the governmental approval process. He is especially familiar with the approval process for New Jersey and Lawrence Township.

Tom brings a design philosophy to planning and landscape architecture that explores historical precedent, theory and strong architectural ideas.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)

Stearns Associates LLC is corporate member of the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). We are also members of the New Jersey Chapter and the Delaware Valley Chapter (DVGBC) of the USGBC.

Tom Stearns is a LEED® Accredited Professional (LEED® AP). based on LEED NC Version 2.2.

Mr. Stearns has served on the DVGBC Educational Committee, which sponsors educational talks on suistainablility in the greater Phildalphia Area.

Mr. Stearns presented at the 2008 NJASLA annual convention on an overview of the USGBC, LEED rating system, becoming a LEED AP and the Sustainable Sites Initiative sponsored by the ASLA, Lady Bird Johnson WIldflower Center and the US Botanic Garden.

Mr. Stearns is a member of Green Roofs for Healthy Cities, the green roof industry association.

Mr. Stearns has taken the two design courses for Green Roofs including: Green Roof Design 101, and Green Roof Infrastructure 201, which focuses on design and installation.

Stearns Associates is currently working on some institutional projects that are pursuing LEED Certification, and have worked on integrated design teams to think and work across disciplines on sustainable solutions.

A winning design competition scheme created a central green with a grid of specimen zelkova trees to act as a campus focal point on an urban pharmaceutical campus. The green unites the surrounding high rise buildings with New Building 1 and helps promote interaction among employees.

A public green way was developed and incorporated a central courtyard with a fountain feature. Steps with a formal balustrade provided access from the green way to the main motor court level. Here a bosque of palms creates a more formal courtyard atmosphere and provide shade from the hot tropical sun.

Located on the former Geraldine Dodge estate, the landscape took its cue for the existing climax forest groves and allees of trees. The landscape became a simple statement of a corporate villa with an expansive front lawn. The fast-tracked project got designed, approved and

As part of the UMCP project 12 acres of former FMC industrial buildings were removed to create a regenerative landscape in the form of a 32 acre passive-use public park along the Millstone River.

The park includes a small parking area and a paved walking path with gravel pathways to the river. Most of the site is located in floodplain or wetlands.

Native tree and shrub species were used in as well as native grasses and wildflowers. A significant portion of the 32 acre public park was reforested.

The intent is to let the park grow wild and restore a native landscape.

Stearns Associates helped with landscape design and approvals for Munich Re’s 2.5 MW high-efficiency solar panels on a carport structure that will provide shade for the facility's parking lot while reducing annual electricity costs by almost $500,000.

Most importantly, the Munich Re solar energy system will benefit the environment with an annual carbon footprint reduction equivalent to removing more than 400 cars from the road.

This 140,000 sf building provides modern labs for new drug research and development.

A central green was created to act as a campus focal point as part of a multi- building master plan. This was the first building implemented as part of the master plan.
