THE UNION

Since our founding as a global scientific organisation in 1920, The Union has drawn from the best evidence and expertise to advance solutions to public health challenges affecting people living in poverty. We are currently progressing solutions for tuberculosis, HIV and other lung disease, and policies to reduce tobacco use and prevent non-communicable diseases.

With more than 20,000 members and subscribers from 146 countries, The Union has its headquarters in Paris and 11 offices in Africa, the Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America, North America and South-East Asia.

OUR HISTORY

Tuberculosis was known as the White Plague in the 1880s when it was rampant across the globe. The Union was formed by 31 national lung associations in 1920 to unite scientific minds and share the very latest approaches to tackling TB and lung disease.

In this way, The Union changed the face of the battle with TB. The once incurable scourge became curable and there is hope.

It is a necessity for all countries wishing to eradicate tuberculosis to agree among themselves on the methods of fighting it, to agree on the most effective weapons, and to forge… them jointly against the common enemy.

It is in this spirit and for these ends that we wish to create an International Union Against Tuberculosis.

This research will potentially make MDR-TB treatment far less burdensome for everyone involved. Patients shouldn’t have to choose between deafness and death. Dr I.D. Rusen Senior Vice President of Research & Development, The Union

DOTSIn the late 1970s The Union’s Dr Karel Styblo, Director of Scientific Activities and Dr Annik Rouillon, Executive Director, developed the strategy for TB control that later became known as DOTS (directly observed treatment, short course). The Union’s TB model was implemented in collaboration with the national

OUR IMPACT

TB programmes of nine countries in 1978. These programmes yielded high, never-before-seen therapeutic effectiveness, including the cure of the majority of the patients treated. Adopted by the WHO as the international global TB control strategy in 1995, DOTS has been used to treat millions of TB patients right across the world.

MDR-TBThe spread of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) represents a major barrier to hopes of ridding the world of TB.

The current standard treatment regimen for MDR-TB lasts up to 24 months and requires frequent injections, which pose a significant burden both for patients and for health systems tasked with administering treatment. Permanent hearing loss is a serious side effect of the injected medicines used to treat MDR-TB.

The Union’s MDR short-course treatment trials in francophone Africa and the STREAM clinical trial are revolutionising both our knowledge of – and approach to – MDR care globally.

TOBACCO CONTROL Since 2007 The Union has been working with governments and civil society in low and middle income countries with the highest rates of tobacco use, supporting introduction of increased tobacco taxes, smokefree areas, graphic health warnings on tobacco products and bans on tobacco advertising – policies proven to reduce tobacco use.

Angela became infected with MDR-TB at 35 years old and spent three years in treatment. She is now cured and works as a child-minder, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

OUR HOPES

The Union’s great strength has been its in-depth knowledge and commitment to the fight against tuberculosis, combined with the flexibility to respond to new challenges, such as tobacco use, the emergence of HIV/AIDS and the non-communicable disease pandemic. These qualities position us well to make a major contribution to achieving the public health goals now agreed and in the future.

We are already playing a leading role in the World Health Organization’s “End TB” campaign to reduce TB deaths by 95 per cent (compared with 2015) by 2035.

At the same time, our experience and expertise are well matched to meeting the new targets for 2030 outlined in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 – a goal that The Union worked hard to articulate and advocate for.

We have come far but our work is not yet over.

VIII Alliance Seminar participants hold up signs as they pose for a photo in front of the National Congress of Brazil, showing the unwavering commitment of civil society organisations working in tobacco control across Latin America.

In India, The Union’s Project Axshya volunteers travelled hundreds of kilometres by bicycle, motorbike, public transport and even boat to transport 250,000 sputum samples to microscopy centres for TB testing in 2014. Just one part of our work towards a world free from TB.

ENGAGEMENT OPPORTUNITIES

FLAGSHIP EVENTS 47th Union World Conference on Lung Health (from 10,000 euros/year)

The Union has been organising international conferences on tuberculosis and related issues since shortly after its founding in 1920. Today its world and regional conferences attract thousands of delegates who come to learn about the latest research, programmatic and policy developments; share their successes and challenges; and re-connect with others.

The World Conference on Lung Health in 2016 takes place in Liverpool, United Kingdom, from 25 to 29 October.

The theme for the conference is Confronting Resistance: Fundamentals to Innovations. The theme addresses a number of areas for discussion, including the growing problem of resistance to existing TB drugs, which is one of the most important challenges facing this community and public health in general today.

Sponsorship packages, advertising and marketing opportunitiesWe offer our sponsors the unique opportunity to be involved in shaping the delegates’ experience throughout the event and to make their mark in the history of the conference through brand awareness campaigns and product placement. During the conference, your company will have access to an exclusive audience of over 3,000 delegates from over 130 different countries.

We offer a range of bespoke sponsorship and partnership opportunities. For more information and for the 2016 sponsorship brochure, please contact the partnership team by email [email protected]

The Centennial Campaign was launched with the 1st President’s Centennial Dinner in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2012. This event is now held each year during the World Conference until 2020. Already popular, the first three dinners have raised $1 million.

With high-profile speakers, a champagne reception, silver service dining and fine wine, this is a great evening for those who want to entertain clients and guests, as well as the opportunity to network with 200 other business leaders from a variety of industries and other stakeholders in public health.
