Twenty-two cowboys worth more than $6 million in contracts will take part in the Professional Bull

Riders (PBR) Australian Cup Series’ National Finals at Sydney Olympic Park on Saturday, July 9. And one of those amazing riders will be Oklahoma born and all-round good guy, Cord McCoy.

“The Australian Cup Series consists of four different events with the National Finals here in Sydney,” Cord said.

“I think this series is going to be special, not only because the best bulls in Australia are coming to these four events but you have the best bull riders from Australia, Canada, Mexico and the United States competing.”

The 30-year-old rides approximately 50 weeks a year at different events and said growing up on his family ranch infl uenced his exciting, yet dangerous career path.

“My dad and three older brothers rode bulls and I think I got on my fi rst calf when I was fi ve-years-old at a rodeo and grew into it,” he said.

“By the time I was a sophomore in high school I was making a living riding bulls. I went on to get a full ride scholarship to college on a rodeo team and when I fi nished college I never did fi ll out a résumé, I just stepped into the PBR.”

Bull riding in Australia is mostly confi ned to regional towns around the country but Cord said our Aussie bull riders are some of the best in the world.

“The Australians have been excellent this year,” he said.

“You look at the top 40 bull riders in the world standings and there are a whole bunch of Aussies in there, they’ve defi nitely been holding their own.”

Despite the tough competition Cord faces in the National Finals, he said winning is a simple formula.

“I try and keep it as simple as I can. It’s the cowboy versus the bull and as long as you do your job, chances are it’s going to turn out well,” he said.

But sometimes the bull can get the better of the cowboy – in 2004 Cord experienced the dangerous side of bull riding with a near fatal accident.

“In 2004 I got kicked in the head and it crushed my skull, they didn’t think I was going to live to start with and then didn’t know if I was going to be mentally stable,” Cord said.

“Eight months after the accident I got on my fi rst bull just to prove that I could. It wasn’t as if I was trying to conquer the world at bull riding, I just wanted to prove I could and was thankful I still had the

talent. Now every bull I get on I wear a helmet.”

Bull riding hasn’t been the only thing Cord has been well-known for though. In 2010, Cord along with his brother, Jet, starred in the 16th season of the American version of ‘The Amazing Race’.

‘Team Cowboys’ as they were tagged, fi nished that season as runners up and due to their huge popularity around the world were invited back in 2011 to race for a second time in the recent series ‘The Amazing Race: Unfi nished Business’.

This all-star version of the race pitted popular teams from previous seasons against each other to have another shot at winning $1 million.

“It’s an experience you defi nitely never forget. All the places that you see and the things you get to do is a once in a lifetime opportunity and we did it twice,” Cord said.

On their second ‘The Amazing Race’ adventure, the fi rst stop for the contestants was Sydney and the cowboy brothers couldn’t have been happier.

“When Jet and I were fi lling out our form for the show, one of the questions was ‘what country do you want to visit most?’ Jet and I both put Australia,” he said.

“So our fi rst envelope we opened up said ‘make your way to Sydney, Australia’! That was cool as both of us wanted to come here and the people here are so nice helping two lost cowboys with backpacks.”

Even though Cord and his

brother Jet had two shots at winning the million dollar prize he said he wasn’t disappointed at missing out, but more thankful to have such an amazing experience with his brother.

“Every team takes off to win a million dollars; I still believe that’s why everyone signs up for it. However when you are done with the race, a million dollars or not, you’re glad you did it and ran the race,” he said.

“A million bucks might be the persuasion but defi nitely when it’s over it’s not the reason why you did it.”

Cord McCoy returns to Sydney on July 9 at Acer Arena to compete for the $200,000 cash prize at the 2011 Professional Bull Riders Australian Cup Series’ National Finals.
