Print It! Winning Grammar School benefit from Duplo TrimmerHerscHel Grammar School in Slough have been able to enhance their graphics room with the addition of an IDEAL 1080 trimmer donated by Duplo International as part of PrintIT!; the print-industry scheme aimed at encouraging print through UK education.

The prize is as a result of year 9 student Jaye Sahota winning the PrintIT! award for “Best Understanding of Environmental Concerns” at the PrintIT! award ceremony at this years IPEX 2010.

Laura Regazzacci, Technology College Coordinator at the school comments “We have already been using the guillotine in our graphics room. Pupils making models using thicker card have been finding this an accurate way to cut their materials. This involves them using a process that mirrors the print industry. They are also made aware of the hazards involved and how to protect themselves and others when it is in use and when it is not.”

Print Finishing manufacturers Duplo have supported the PrintIT! scheme since its inception in 2005. Tony Lock, Managing Director Duplo UK comments “we see PrintIT! as an extremely important initiative that has began to show real tangible results within the print industry. Print is no longer just a trade, it is an exciting business sector encompassing all areas of media and communication, and PrintIT! puts that message out for all of us within the industry. We are again glad to see an education establishment making good use of our products, and ensuring students understand quality in the finished product from an early age.”

All Herschel, graphic students entered the competition by submitting a portfolio of work that incorporated their research, design ideas and development for the promotion of Fair Trade products in supermarkets and all areas of the school are benefitting from the new trimmer.

“Our technicians have also made use of the guillotine for larger scale cutting jobs, and our reprographics assistant is delighted to be able to use the guillotine to cut multiple copies of whole school publications. Overall we are as delighted with this award as we were to receive the Photoshop school licence that we won at the PrintIT! event” concludes Mrs. Regazzacci.

The IDEAL 1080 is a high performance professional trimmer, mounted on its own steel frame and operated by foot pedal and offering a choice of blade angle –

wide angle for thicker materials, sharply pointed narrow angle for paper and light cards. An 800mm cutting length provides versatility over sheets being cut and offers a real back up option to a guillotine in an inplant, school or commercial print operation.www.duplouk.com

A year 11 student who has been making full use of the guillotine recently, and has in fact become the ‘guardian’ of the machine during lessons, keeping it locked when not in use.

Print Ireland and Sign & Digital Ireland will take place on the 12 – 13 October 2011 at the Citywest Convention Centre, Dublin.

WitH five candidates being nominated for four different awards, the efforts of both the employers and employees of the paper industry shone through at the Proskills Awards 2010.

There were nominations in the categories of ‘Advanced Apprentice of the Year’, ‘Apprentice of the Year’, ‘Learner of the Year’ & ‘Union Learning Rep of the Year’. Out of the 5 nominations, 3 were then voted winners with 2 nominations coming worthy runners up.

Terry Watts, CEO of Proskills UK commented “We have again been amazed by the accomplishments of the finalists who have shown what exceptional talent we have within the UK workforce and without exception all our finalists have made outstanding use of the opportunities presented to them”.

The top award was shared by Ashley Allison of Chesapeake, Lanarkshire and Steven Harris from Aylesford Newsprint, Kent, who were both presented with the ‘Advanced Apprentice of the Year’ an award category sponsored by DS Smith.

Ashley, an apprentice in carton manufacturing, is the first female employed to operate cut and crease machines in the company. Steven, a mechanical apprentice, is in his final year and had recently been promoted to hydraulics technician. Both of these apprentices are good examples of the benefits undertaking an apprenticeship can give.

Ashley talked about her award, “I was shocked to be nominated because there are so many people working within the sector, but I can’t describe what it feels like to have actually won it, it’s one of the most important achievements I’ve made so far”

The ‘Learner of the Year’ category which was sponsored by The Concrete Society, was awarded to John Clements, a section leader from DS Smith. John has excelled within the business by focusing on career progression and training opportunities. He has an appetite to learn and has taken every

opportunity to acquire skills and knowledge to allow him to make an invaluable contribution to the company

John Clements commented on winning the award for ‘Learner of the Year’, “I felt very proud to win this award, it’s been a busy year and I’ve had a lot of work on – so for me to win this award feels like a massive achievement. I just want to keep going with my career and continue learning, I’m really enjoying it at the moment and hopefully I will have more success in the future”

Finalists included Ross Delgado (also of DS Smith) who narrowly missed out on the ‘Apprentice of the

Year’ award, sponsored by the Glass Qualification Authority, and Timothy Heward from Glatfelter Lydney who was also nominated for the award of ‘Union Learning Rep of the Year’, an award sponsored by Unite the Union

Terry Watts continued “Each finalist should be very proud of the achievements that they have made and the remarkable impact they are having in their workplaces”. Visit: www.proskills.co.uk. Paper Apprentices Steal the Show

Leading figures attend The Printing Charity’s 183rd Annual Luncheon

nearly 200 leading figures in the UK’s printing and publishing industries attended The Printing Charity’s 183rd Annual

Luncheon at Stationers’ Hall, London, on 4 November. This year’s guest speaker, award winning journalist and

media guru, Phil Hall began by entertaining the audience with anecdotes from his time as Editor of “News of World”. He went on to say that the internet is not necessarily the grim reaper for the printed word but newspapers have to realise that if they provide content for free they will kill the printed word.

Hall argued that the internet can be an ally and cited the case of one national newspaper that is successfully serving up a very different online offering from its printed version. He said that the print industry should use the new media frontiers as an opportunity and not regard them as a barrier to future success.

The charity’s outgoing President, Michael Johnson, spoke about the charity’s achievements during his two year term, including its rebranding as The Printing Charity and the increased spend under its grants programme from £189,000 to £450,000 since 2008. He also thanked Robert McClements, Print Yorkshire’s Chief Executive, and Garrick Staples, who took part in the 2010 Peking to Paris Car Rally to raise money for the charity.

The appointment of Sir Christopher Meyer, KCMG, as the charity’s President for 2011 was announced at the event. Sir Christopher’s distinguished diplomatic career culminated in his appointment as Ambassador to the United States. He has also served as Chairman of the Press Complaints Commission.

Stephen Gilbert, Chief Executive of The Printing Charity, said: “Once again, those attending our Annual Luncheon, entered into the spirit by helping us to raise £2,920 through the table draw. We would especially like to thank Hello! Magazine for sourcing a fabulous range of prizes on our behalf and the print and publishing industries for supporting our 183rd Annual Luncheon.” www.theprintingcharity.org.uk

Have you heard of the YMP organisation? Hopefully your answer was yes, many will recognise it, and will have been past members and I am sure would say it was an important learning experience in developing their printing career. Those of you that are not familiar, YMP has for over 80 years provided quality training and networking opportunities for young people who work in our industry.

It is imperative that we give the next generation the skills and qualifications for the future of the industry. YMP can be a major factor in influencing their development and knowledge. Bringing together, trainees, potential managers, junior managers and printers with different skills and experiences, giving them all the opportunity to discuss and share their knowledge.

Development is achieved with structured training programmes, company visits, business meetings, team building and a yearly conference. These are designed and geared to the personal requirements of the group and any business objectives of their companies.

The next event in the YMP Calendar is going to be the National Conference and

Training weekend, being held in Blackpool, 25th-27th February 2011.There are few places in the UK that can claim to be as iconic as Blackpool,

a town that embodies many of those qualities attributed to Lancashire, enjoyment, friendship and honest hard work. It is against this background that the National Conference 2011 will strive to make it an occasion to remember.

The usual fancy dress will be taking place on the Friday evening and we will be hitting the town dressed to kill. Starting the night off with traditional Fish and Chips, followed by a show with a difference! Can you really afford NOT to come to Blackpool, be there or miss out on what promises to be the conference to end all conferences.

The training element to the conference is being repeated from a previous event, with AdFab, based around Marketing and Promotion. Those that attended the conference at Dunston Hall in Norwich 2005, will know exactly what to expect. Who can forget the very loveable late Tony Acton, bearing all for his team! For further information, visit. www.ymp.org.uk

YMP – do you know it?

Roland’s VersaCAMM VS-640 helps DVLC motor forward at higher speedsnot every company needs the benefits of special colours and effects in its wide format printer, and Washington based Discount Vehicle Lettering Company is a classic example of a business which relies on fast, regular and reliable output. When the Roland VersaCAMM VS-640 was brought to market, it wasn’t the metallic and white option which appealed to this North East display specialist but, instead, it was the 1.62m width and its ability to produce dual CMYK with precision contour cutting.

Directors Mark and Helen Taylor are the brains behind the cannily named DVLC and its specialist services to the UK’s motor trade. The company was formed 14 years ago to cater for growing popularity of vehicle graphics and liveries and this incorporates computer-cut vinyl applications as well as full colour digital print. Steady growth has seen business grow and, when investment into new technology has become essential, the acquisition of the right machines has enabled increased production to take place seamlessly.

A devotee of Roland DG’s systems for many years, DVLC has been using a SolJet Pro III XC-540 for the production of colourful and durable print and cut designs which are used to decorate every type of vehicle, from a single car through fleets of vans, to trailers and other modes of transport. This is complemented by showroom and forecourt point of sale applications, such as pop-up and roll-up banners, posters, window graphics and virtually every other type of display likely to be used by the motor trade.

Short term displays for special events, such as sales promotions and special offers, can be designed and created along with longer life, durable applications which are able to handle the tough life to which vehicles are subjected on an everyday basis. Larger motor groups, agencies and fleet customers have become so accustomed to DVLC’s impeccable service and fast turn round that many now rely on the company’s dedicated on-line ordering system which allows clients to order new and replacement graphics quickly and efficiently.

Because of the growth in demand for DVLC’s full colour applications, in the spring of 2010 the company recognised that it needed to invest in an additional print and cut solution to maintain its turn round and delivery criteria. As important as the quality of print was the accuracy in cutting, and both these essentials have now been realised since the purchase of the Roland VersaCAMM VS-640.

The generous 1.62m width of this combined print and cut is deceptive because of its compact footprint, and its space saving attributes are complemented by low running costs and ability to run unattended. Knowing the high standards of Roland quality from its earlier unit, DVLC recognised that CMYK was more than adequate for its needs and decided to invest in the dual CMYK version of the machine.

Print quality is only part of the story at DVLC, however, as Mark Taylor explains: “As well as being able to rely on consistent and accurate colour at

the highest throughput speeds, absolutely vital to us is that the machine can cut accurately. A combination printer/cutter needs to be able to maintain the highest tolerances, even on long rolls of media. There would be nothing worse than printing a job only to find that the cutting hasn’t maintained the correct registration in the production cycle.

“When we went to try out the Roland VersaCAMM VS-640 with Roland’s partner, Signmaster, we really put the machine through its paces by giving it the most difficult samples to print and cut,” Taylor continues. “No matter

how demanding we were with our test files, the unit refused to let us down and maintained the finest tolerances throughout. Its performance was outstanding and we decided, there and then, that this was the right machine for our company.”

Helen Taylor comments on some of the other advantages that DVLC has discovered since installing the VS-640. “Because we print bi-directionally using dual CMYK, we’re able to output many jobs in what is essentially a draft mode, resulting in very fast throughput rates,” she says. “The new arrangement of the print-head and inks in this machine means there’s no banding even at the highest speed and lowest resolution, with solid vibrant colours and smooth graduated tints. The time savings are significant, with no compromise on end quality.”

“We also find the life of the cartridges is astonishing,” Mark Taylor emphasises. “Unlike some ink-jet printers which appear to run out when they’re far from being empty, the VS-640’s options continue until the ink has genuinely been exhausted. The savings we’ve noticed are considerable, and we wouldn’t be surprised if the vertical cartridge design is partly responsible for this.”

Since its launch, the modestly priced yet highly advanced Roland VersaCAMM VS-640 wide-format print and cut solution has been joined by three narrower models, the VS-540 (1.37m), the VS-420 (1.06m) and the VS-300 (762mm). All of these versatile solutions are available in three versions of CMYKLcLm plus metallic and white, standard six-colour (CMYKLcLm) and dual CMYK.

“The flexibility in configurations of our VersaCAMM VS series is demonstrated clearly with the machine in daily use at Discount Vehicle Lettering Company. Quality, high speed output of CMYK is matched by exacting tolerances for precision contour-cutting,” states Mat Drake, print product manager at Roland DG (UK). “Although we are amazed at the innovative results being created with the metallic and white ink models, we don’t want to over-shadow the fact that this system is also absolutely perfect in environments where reliable four-colour print-and-cut is the order of the day.”www.rolanddg.co.uk, tel: 0845 230 90 60

ocÉ has announce the global debut of the Océ ColorStream 3500 high speed inkjet system, with a unique combination of CMYK output, fi ft h and sixth colour printing and simplex/duplex fl exibility previously available only on Océ toner based continuous feed printers.

The new Océ ColorStream 3500 product line extends the proven Océ JetStream inkjet series. In addition, the new system extends the reach of the Océ inkjet systems as a solution for mailstream environments to transition to full colour printing.

The fl exible full colour web press gives customers a reliable solution for transaction, TransPomo, direct mail, book and manual applications. The 3500 provides a modular off ering in various single and twin confi gurations. The production and media fl exibility contributes to a future proof system that simplifi es the transition of applications and business models to more sophisticated documents with variable personalisation and smarter communication in colou.

Users can chose from a combination of specialty inks, including MICR, along with CMYK printing to support the widest range of business opportunities. The broad range of standard and special papers between 60–160 g/m² ensures versatility for all types of printing requirements.

The ColorStream 3500 system off ers extreme productivity for users with volumes up to 12 million A4 pages per month on a single system or up to 24 million A4 images per month on a twin system. The system prints at75 metres per minute with a print width of 540 mm (21,25”). That translates to 505 A4-size ppm (537 lett er) for a single unit or 1,010 A4-size ppm (1,070 lett er) for a twin confi guration, at 600 x 600 dpi resolution. With optional multilevel dot modulation, crisp details and smooth halft ones can be produced at full rated speed.

The Océ ColorStream 3500 system is the fi rst high volume, full colour inkjet system that combines Océ DigiDot piezo electric drop-on-demand technology, Océ SRA MP controller power and the fl exibility of Océ VarioStream L-, H- or U-shape twin confi gurations. Users can quickly switch from duplex to simplex printing without compromising productivity.

While the majority of the digital print volume is still monochrome, the market is trending towards full colour plus additional colours. An entry level monochrome confi guration of the Océ ColorStream

3500 system allows print providers to start with small colour volumes and just the same be prepared for future colour business. The transition to colour oft en comes gradually, and typically not all the print volume switches to full colour immediately. In the early stage, the majority of the volume remains monochrome, while a small but growing share switches to colour. The fl exible Océ ColorStream 3500 system allows users to adapt the printing mode to match their pace of colour transition. A 5th or 6th colour is easily fi eld-upgraded. A full colour OcéColorStream 3500 can be set up as monochrome only system when needed. In addition to Océ’s new high fi delity pigmented inkset for CMYK printing customers may add MICR or other specialty inks.

The Océ ColorStream 3500 system encourages greater daily operational effi ciency through its high ease of use for the operator. Printer operators can manage the inkjet system as easily as their existing continuous feed devices through wide operator intervention spaces inside the system, easy to adjust sensors, paper feed support and the familiar Océ GUI look and feel.

The 3500 was specifi cally designed for suitability and coexistence with their toner based systems. Its size, weight, power requirements and modular set-up allow the Océ ColorStream 3500 to be installed in almost all environments. Print and data centres can migrate to high volume full colour inkjet production with minimum impact on existing infrastructure and workfl ow. The traditional right-to-left printing direction of toner based continuous feed systems was chosen for the Océ ColorStream3500 system for easier integration into existing paper logistics. Printed rolls leave the printer on the same side as they do on toner based machines.

The Océ ColorStream 3500 system was introduced at the Canon Expo in Tokyo. The fi rst Océ ColorStream 3500 placement is planned for early 2011, with general availability by mid 2011.

In 2010 Océ joined the Canon Group of companies. Canon develops, manufactures and markets a growing line-up of copying machines, printers, cameras, optical and other products that meet a diverse range of customer needs. www.canon.com, www.oce.com

first hP Designjet Z6200 goes into newcastle printersaltHougH beta test and demonstrations models have been in circulation for the last couple of weeks, large format digital printer company, The Rip, placed the first UK order for the brand new Designjet Z6200 printer recently. Delivery and installation of the new 60” model takes place this month.

Word of mouth is still possibly one of the best forms of marketing, especially with a product that had only just been launched. A testament to the relationship The Rip and supplier CWE Solutions have is their ability to communicate effectively and The Rip are due to reap the benefits of this early news.

John Laidler, Managing Director of The Rip explains, “We were looking to replace some of our ageing printers and were already impressed with the quality, performance and durability of the HP Designjet range. Recommendations from our supplier on the Z6200 mean that we get the best we possibly can right from the outset.”

In production the new Z6200 will enable higher production at better quality, with lower ink consumption. The Z6200 claims not just to be an upgrade to the Z6100; new elements include higher production speeds, wider colour gamut and improved print quality, particularly on backlit film. New technologies include new print heads, new inks and updated third generation Omas media sensor; a powerful combination producing a throughput of up to 140sqm per hour and saleable output three and a half times faster than rival machines of comparable quality.www.cwesolutions.co.uk

RoLAnD DG SIMPLIfIeS The RouTe To wIDe foRMAT oPTIonS

Because of the increasing levels of interest from the commercial print sector wanting to move into wide format inkjet production, Roland DG is now offering succinct and practical information on a dedicated microsite located at www.rolanddg.co.uk/RCM2. This forward thinking manufacturer of versatile inkjet systems has also produced a special printed guide explaining the benefits of wide format production, and this is available free of charge via the same web page.

As a long established manufacturer of reliable, high quality production systems for the digital arena, Roland DG has always reacted positively with emerging markets for its technology. The company’s latest print and cut solutions echo the burgeoning requirements of the commercial print sector and, consequently, offset litho businesses, packaging specialists and proofing houses are amongst those increasingly turning to Roland’s wide format inkjet solutions. The potential for new avenues of creativity has now moved far beyond simple poster production into increasingly versatile applications which fit the remit of each commercial segment, with new opportunities made possible with the flexibility of durable inks and special finishes.

“Although familiar with display production, the general print sector falls outside the categories usually associated with wide format digital print, such as sign makers, photolabs and digital bureaus,” explains Brett Newman, Roland DG (UK)’s Technical Director. “This is the reason why we have developed a new area on our web site for the commercial side of the industry which, currently, is looking to invest in inkjet technology.

“In addition to outlining our product portfolio, we’re also offering our valuable free guide which includes all the information needed when considering the purchase of a wide format machine,” continues Newman. “Print companies already have the production skills; now we can help them make the transition into all areas of short run digital output, including colour matched proofing, labels and packaging prototyping, as well as signs, displays, point of sale and a wealth of additional innovative applications.”

Roland DG believes that, as well as offering the print and cut technology needed for the production of wide format output, companies established in other sectors of the printing industry also want to know how to maximise their investments into inkjet. Today’s end customers increasingly want to use a single supplier for all print requirements, and Roland’s “Ten reasons to get into wide format digital print” endorses the benefits and opportunities available to the commercial sector and its existing client base.

The choice of eco-solvent-based and UV-curable ink formulations also brings with it the ability to print specialist applications which feature unusual textures and finishes. Roland’s VersaCAMM VS quartet of solutions is available in a range of sizes and offers metallic and white ink options, whilst the VersaUV LEC-330 and LEC-540 both use flexible UV-curable chemistry, a highly opaque white and a versatile clear varnish, along with LED curing. Both product families include precision contour cutting to exacting tolerances, and all Roland printers are supplied with the versatile VersaWorks RIP.www.rolanddg.co.uk/RCM2, telephone: 0845 230 90 60

litHo and digital printer LEFA Print have enhanced their digital finishing capability with the addition of a DC-645 Cutter/Slitter/Creaser and Digital System 445 Booklet maker from Duplo.

The Kent based company, established in 1962 and acquired in 2000, were looking for “as much automation and quick set-up in our finishing, to really maximise the investment of our digital presses” according to Ed Arthur, Managing Director.

The history of LEFA has seen steady growth over its early years, accelerated by a spell of multi acquisitions in 2007 which saw a collection of local printers purchased with a multitude of plant equipment.

“After the acquisitions, our strength was firmly in the litho area with the type of plant equipment and customers we inherited. Steadily we have grown our digital business of which many of our traditional customers are migrating toward. As this growth increased, it was clear that we could not continue running short run work on our litho-led finishing equipment”.

“We were looking for automation, precision without compromising production speeds. So we picked up the phone to Duplo.”

Duplo’s DC-645 combines multiple finishing

functions in a single machine, slitting, cutting and creasing documents in one pass. The machine also features registration mark reader which alleviates the effect of image shift, and a barcode reader for automatic job recognition. Many of these features attracted LEFA to the product as Mr. Arthur explains;

“We were starting with a blank sheet of paper, and we were after a ‘catch all’ machine, and the DC-645 met our needs. It was firstly driven by repeat business card work, but the machine is so versatile we now run postcards, business promotional material

and brochures on the machine. Duplo kit is so easy to run, our press operators can look after the presses and the finishers too.”

The Digital System 445 is a booklet maker with inline square back module, which LEFA are using to minimise set up times by creasing and three knife trimming work all in one pass.

“It really makes a difference not having to trim the top and tail and offline crease a job before it goes into the booklet maker. With the Duplo we can go from press to booklet maker in one step. This enables us to turn around short run work in the same amount of time it would take to just set up our larger stitchers in the litho area. It has made a real difference to our digital service,” Arthur concludes. www.duplouk.com

Perfect Jogging performedquickly with the Air Blower• Reduce or eliminate static• Dry printed ink quicker• Reduce time and costs from feeding

double sheets

Neat Jogging – FASTThanks to the most powerful Air Blower in its class, theAJ700 reliably jogs unevenly arranged work in seconds, whilst helping prevent set off and marking by blowing airbetween the sheets. When using Air Blowing with Jogging, Static is heavily reduced and usually eliminated.Work such as collating, bookletmaking and overprinting ismade so much easier by reducing paper feeding errorssuch as double sheeting.

Speedier Ink DryingWet ink dries quicker using the air blower system and thiscan be even more effective on double sided work.

Various Job Modes – at thetouch of a button.Jogging strength and air volume are adjustable accordingto the quality and quantity of paper. In addition, the AJ700 can operate in several modes suchas air only, jogger only and a time interval mode(continuous jogging for a preset period after the air hasstopped) Any prices quoted are subject

Production Print WitH business-winning environmental credentials is the result of the newly launched partnership between BioMedia® and

Epson®. In a joint first, the two companies have announced their intention to work closely together to provide printers with a sustainable print solution.

Biodegradable within 5 years and recyclable, BioMedia® provides a durable alternative to plastic based and non-recyclable outdoor substrates. When combined with Epson’s environmentally conscious UltraChrome™, K3, HDR or even GS inks, the result is a fully environmentally-friendly production process.

The announcement follows 18 months of close co-operation to develop and profile the BioMedia® range manufactured and distributed by the G3S group. BioMedia® is compatible with the Epson Stylus Pro GS 6000, both coated and uncoated, while a water based coating has been developed for aqueous Stylus Pro printers. The range includes:

200 micron ideal to replace laminated posters350 micron ideal for pop up roller banners and shelf edges500 micron ideal for pop up systems750 micron ideal for flexible signageBio Banner replaces PVC banners

Mark Sanderson, Sales Director for BioMedia® says: “We have built up a solid working relationship with Epson and are delighted that the rigorously tested range is now available to users worldwide. The varied portfolio ensures there is a substrate for every need, enabling specifiers — confident of consistent results — to pick BioMedia® for a broad spectrum of campaign demands.”BioMedia® is available through Epson dealers worldwide and through G3S. New Year High ResolutionThe science of capturing images of the world around us has been active for a long time, over a thousand years in fact, but developments in the last ten and probably the next ten are the most radical ever, and with the most implications for our industry. Martin Christie writes…

altHougH PHotograPHy is recorded as having a hundred and

fifty years of history, the principle of projecting images by opitical means so they could be viewed by others was understood and apparently demonstrated over a millenia ago in Persia, modern day Iraq, once a cradle of advanced science while England was disputing ownership with the Vikings. Centuries later this technique enabled the images to be traced on to paper and thus produce in effect the first colour copies. The only limitation of this system was that the images were projected — by simple physics — upside down. It took the development of lenses and mirrors designed for other uses to be adapted to correct this, and create the camera obscura, a popular Victorian visitor entertainment. Thus advances in one area benefit another and progress leaps forward.

At a similar time others were working on the regular reproduction of images using chemical reactions affected by the application of light. The Englishman Fox Talbot is widely regarded as the father of conventional — I nearly used the word “modern” no longer appropriate for the process — photography for producing pictures on reactive coated paper, although it emerges that a Frenchman had actually managed the trick a decade before. His use of bitumen as a coating and lavender oil for processing along with an eight hour exposure made the process somewhat impractical for commercial use however.

I start with this little preamble into history to reflect on where we are now, with modern photographic imaging being almost universally digital, and where we are going. When you are working with print on demand from day to day you are entirely reactive to customer input and therefore unlikely to see the wood when you are surrounded by trees. Getting away for a day to visit Canon’s Pro Solutions at London’s Business Design Centre in Islington was a chance to see the wider landscape.

The second year of this event, Canon effectively picked up a bouncing ball dropped by Nikon, who should take some credit for originating a

professional exhibition incorporating hardware, software, practical demonstrations and advice seminars. It’s all very well having a showcase of printing and finishing machinery and their output, but an equal amount of attention needs to be directed to the input and the handling of it which is just as relevant to the copy shop.

Canon are perhaps in a better position than most manufacturers having a broad range of devices from cameras, scanners and projectors, to copiers and large format printers, but they also brought other industry service suppliers to the event underlining that these days no one has the complete solution. A co-operation with other complimentary agents is a mutually beneficial policy. As a representative said to me off the record “We seem to have lost a lot of the we know everything arrogance that used to be part of promotions”. This can only be to the good of those of us who have to trial and ultimately pay for the products.

One trend that is certain is that the home consumer will increasingly have technology that was previously the preserve of the professional. Even

basic digital cameras will take bigger pictures, video quality and popularity will increase, and realistic 3D images are not far away.

The challenge for the print shop, as ever, will be to do things the customer can’t do conveniently from home. Fortunately, the convenience of electronic information and image transfer has not replaced the need for hard copy, and the satisfaction of a quality print is still preferred over a

projection on a flickering light screen, though the day of the three dimensional printer in the regular work place may be not that far away.

One of the buzz phrases in photography at the moment is High Dynamic Range or HDR for short. As an effect, this is nothing really new, it has just been given a boost by the ease with which it can be done on the computer rather than labouring in the darkroom.

One of the more popular ways it is

DIGITAL IMAGING

being done in digital photography is by merging three otherwise identical images with different exposures to produce one final result with a wider tonal range than any of the three individual. If you are a keen digital photographer you can find loads of current HDR images, tips and advice by using a search engine, along with software that will make the process simple for the amateur, and as a printer it’s worth a look so you can be a step ahead of some picky customer who arrives at the shop counter with his or her latest creation.

It’s not rocket science, although many of the obsessive anoraks may try and make it so. We know from experience in printing that there is a high contrast between the lightest and the darkest point of any one image. Reducing the contrast enables the tonal range to be extended, whether in colour or greyscale, to produce something more intense overall. This can be good or bad, depending on the talents and the artistic interpretation of the creator, as many examples on the internet will prove.

The purists claim that only images created from RAW compilations are true HDR images, but the effect can be simulated in both Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom, and is currently popular in many magazines and adverts. It shouldn’t produce a major issue for printing, although some colours may need the wider gamut of large format inkjet printers to reproduce faithfully.

The examples here are taken from three RAW originals, shot on a tripod to ensure an exact set of triplets, and with exposure bracketed both over and under the central correctly exposed one. These three are then pasted together using an HDR processor in Adobe Photoshop Creative Suites. They are not heavily processed but just to show the effect.

Other customers may be much more adventurous. There may also be some issues buried deep in file saving if the customer is not aware of issues in saving for print. Generally HDR files output as Tiffs, but there may well be a variance with the colours of a Jpeg output, for example, which has been saved for website display.

As ever, what the customer can see on the screen and what we can reproduce on paper is the main point of possible

contention. Nothing new there. Just another digital issue to be aware of.

Moving on from paper, we had a chance to road test a Mimaki UJF 3042 printer that prints on all sorts of things from golf balls to toilet seats ! We didn’t get to try all of the print surfaces. That would have taken a longer trial and taken up a lot of probably error, but it was an interesting challenge all the same.

When I heard we were getting an A3 printer on trial I was expecting something that would fit on a desktop, but when it came out of the box and needed four men to carry it, I had to think again. If you’ve only got a standard, copier width doorway, think again. Unless you are going to take a window out, and clear a bit of space, the Mimaki is not for you. It will also need a decent ventilation system to sort out local fumes.

It’s heavy -120 kg — because it’s build solidly — industrial strength — and it’s wide — over a metre long and nearly a metre wide — because it has a carriage that is driven back and forth and needs room to move. When it does fi re up, it does so with a remarkable selection of noises and automated actions that give it a life of its own.

Inevitably, with its size and complication, the Mimaki looks a bit daunting at first. In fact it’s also a bit daunting at second and third glance as well. Its heavy four colour inks need a daily maintenance schedule to prevent them clogging heads and other vital parts. The push button interface on the machine console has a number of functions not familiar on any other type of printer, and the software RIP has a sometimes confusing selection of print settings and options.

I point these things out, not to criticise the machine but to forewarn anyone thinking of an impulse purchase that this is not a simple plug and play. You cannot just load it up, press green for go and walk away. This baby will require your full attention.

Copy shop type printing up to A3 is comparatively straight forward. It’s constrained by the size of the paper and the drum, so you can’t easily make a mistake. Once you move up to large format roll printing, where the target size can vary, and both the media and the print heads move, there’s a lot more

to go wrong. With the Mimaki, this is

taken a big step further because you need to direct the inks to a precise spot, using an accurate template or measurement, on a platform that moves up and down as well as backward and forward.

The heads move from side to side like a conventional inkjet printer, the main difference being an ultra-violet light source that cures the inks as soon as they are laid so that items are not only dry to touch but hardened for scratch resistance.

The platform on which the items to be printed are laid can be raised or lowered precisely to clear the moving heads, and can cope with anything up to 5cm deep. The height needs to be set carefully: too high and heads may foul or too low and ink spray will spill around the edges. When printing the platform is drawn by a motor below the moving heads. It’s a piece of sophisticated synchronisation as much mechanical as it is digital.

But that’s also why the printer has to be operated with care and attention. It needs a human eye to oversee the action and all the functional operations that need to be set before you can press the go button.

The printer can, in theory, print on anything shallow enough to fit into its A3 sized pan, and with a regular smooth surface, as long as the ink will take to it. And that includes a huge variety of things which don’t require a special coating, as well as some that do.

All sorts of promotional gifts,

particularly short run individualised products for local traders, are among the target client base for this printer. Pens, lighters, fridge magnets and the like which previously would be sent out for minimum run-type orders can be handled as well as one offs like the complete surface of a laptop, or a block of wood. It can also print directly onto clear acetate for signs or more artistic creations.

Although essentially a conventional CMYK four colour printer, the Mimaki is also able to print white as a base or overprint to add vibrance to images.

Once you’ve sorted out the templates for the individual pieces and sorted out colour profiles and other print settings, it should be relatively straight forward as the settings can be saved and used again. Just drop in the new artwork, and away you go, just remembering to place the blanks the right way up !

Not a machine for the average copy shop, perhaps, but a very impressive and adaptable piece of kit.

Please cHecK out your CSMA members benefits that offer group savings on a growing number of business

services – have you asked for an insurance comparison yet? The insurance for our own print shop has come in

at an amazing 60% savings per annum, so just send a copy of your existing policy to our broker Abigail.Rees@lucasfett es.co.uk. The possible savings must make it worth an email. Whether your policy is due for renewal at the moment or not, Abi will provide you with a non obligationary appraisal.

In fact if you visit www.csmaservices.co.uk you will find the insurance button has now been added. It is the middle one on the top row, so just click on and follow the prompts.

We have received many letters of thanks from readers who have already signed up but the following really appealed to me (as one of the female members of the CSN team). It hadn’t occurred to me that the saving we are making could be used to such good effect!

PeterFirstly, I would like to thank you for producing Copy Shop

News, we both eagerly wait for it to arrive every month and secondly I would like to thank you for the CSMA portal.

I received an email from Lucas Fettes and after contacting them I have managed to save over £600 per year on shop insurance, nearly a third off!

Bad news is that with Xmas fast approaching, wifey has earmarked all those savings for her present!

Keep up the good workMark Walland, Print-Trek

We have been lucky in our part of the country to have enjoyed a relatively mild autumn but the winter has now definitely arrived and walking around the print shop I am finding all the radiators are turned up to maximum output. Luckily we are enjoying savings made by switching our utilities last year, and having been so pleased with the result several members of staff have followed it up by switching their home utilities as well.

United we stand……to use the editor’s not very good link from last month!

…but it is proving to be true. The mere mention of the number of readers we have

immediately grabbed the attention of all the suppliers who are currently helping to make up the ‘buttons’ on the CSMA Services portal and it has made me wonder if there is anything we are missing out on? So please, if you have any ideas get in touch.

And now…back to last month’s bad link…stationery.Customers coming into our copy shop can see boxes

of paper so it has been an easy transition to leave a few reams in the entrance area with a price on. And that has made a diff erence. There have always been boxes of paper on view but having a price ticket has encouraged enquiries – presumably customers ‘hadn’t liked to ask’ in the past, but having seen the paper priced up they are now asking for envelopes, laminating pouches or just a few sheets of a specialist paper so why not contact Spicers and take advantage of the CSMA preferential rates.www.csmaservices.co.uk

Antalis launch 100% recyclable retail hanging signage

antalis McNaughton’s Sign and Display division has launched Antacote Lite, a 100% recyclable retail hanging signage solution that combines ecology with dimensional stability.

Antacote Lite offers all of the benefits and printability of traditional foam centred products such as flatness, good rigidity, lightweight and excellent dimensional stability, but unlike the polystyrene or rigid polyurethane foam (PUR) centred alternatives Antacote Lite is 100% recyclable and

PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) accredited.

Antacote Lite was developed by Antalis McNaughton in conjunction with Germany’s KATZ Group, an internationally renowned manufacturer of recyclable wood pulp products, to meet the increasing corporate responsibility needs of the retail sector and as such has attracted significant interest from several leading international retail supermarket chains.

Chris Green, market manager for Antalis McNaughton says: “Antacote Lite offers a genuine environmental solution for hanging signage. It’s more environmentally friendly than using foam boards, but also much stronger and lighter and unlike standard display board or corrugated products used in retail hanging signage, Antacote Lite remains flat and dimensionally stable.”

All raw materials produced by The KATZ Group are fully recyclable and biodegradable which means that Antacote Lite can be fully recycled along with standard paper and board waste. In addition to

helping to reduce landfill, the more environmentally astute retailers have taken to selling the end of life board for recycling purposes. One such major retailer reported a £250,000 saving on waste management following its move to Antacote Lite.

“Antacote Lite is a welcome addition to our ever growing portfolio of environmentally beneficial products and strengthens our commitment to meeting our customers’ corporate responsibility requirements,” says Mr. Green. “We take our responsibility to the environment seriously and have successfully integrated environmental management into our entire range of business activities. This means our procurement policy states that wherever possible we uphold our corporate responsibility to the environment by selecting recycled products; products with FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC (Programme for Endorsement of Forest Certification) schemes; and biodegradable products and greener plastic alternatives.”www.antalis.co.uk

CYCLuS – A world of no Co2mpromise

arjoWiggins Graphic has announced the launch of an innovative direct marketing campaign – NO CO2mpromise – targeted at designers and corporations. A dedicated website has also been created www.cyclus.dk.

The campaign, which follows Arjowiggins Graphic’s support of last year’s United Nations Climate Change talks in Copenhagen (COP15), consists of five mailers printed on the highly sustainable Cyclus range.

The Cyclus range is manufactured at the Dalum paper mill in Denmark from 100% recycled fibres and requires only one fifth of the energy used to produce virgin fibres. All the residual products throughout the supply chain are reused• 60% of waste paper collected is turned into

usable fibres• 37% that is unsuitable for paper production is used

as raw material in the production of cement• 2% of unusable material is sent to the nearby

power station

• 1% is biological sludge and used as agricultural fertiliser

In 2007 the mill introduced a wood chip burning bio-mass energy plant which made the mill virturally carbon neutral and reduced CO2 emissions by 55,000 tonnes compared to 2006. The surplus energy from the bio fuelled boiler and the steam system is recovered and supplied as district heating to the local neighbourhood of 3500 households. This is an ongoing project which will increase the supply of green energy generated from Dalum Mill to 7000 households in 2011 due to the industry leading environmentally focused manufacturing processes in place at the paper mill.

The paper’s strong sustainable qualities offer no compromise on carbon emissions, the environment or quality. In order to communicate this message Arjowiggins Graphic has created five mailers that will be printed on Cyclus and delivered together in a Cyclus envelope.

The theme of four of the mailers centres on communities that visually communicate their values with no compromise. The Manga, Tattoo, Viking and Rockabilly communities all live their passions through the way that they dress and the activities they undertake. Each mailer will detail the history of the group and include facts and information about events that members attend. They will also include a case study asking what sacrifices they have made to maintain their lifestyle and the different reactions that their distinctive appearances have provoked.

A fifth mailer focuses on the manufacturing process at Dalum and the benefits of using Cyclus for print jobs. Each mailer will be printed on different finishes and grades of Cyclus to showcase the excellent print results that can be achieved using this range. The mailers will be distributed by Antalis McNaughton, Premier Beswick and Paperback

As a call to action, a response card is included, allowing recipients to request a full size poster of

Swedish Rockabilly model Tifa Delone. They will also have the opportunity to sign up to a Cyclus newsletter that will focus on the campaign. Alternatively it is possible to request the poster and sign up to the newsletter online at www.cyclus.dk. Signing up online automatically enters the participant into a free prize drawn to win a No CO2mpromise t-shirt – 10 t-shirts will be given away each week until the 15th December.

www.cyclus.dk has been created specifically for this campaign and includes:• Additional information about the communities• Full details of the campaign• The online response function to claim the

poster etc • A quiz to see if designers themselves compromise

in their daily livesAngela De Vorchik, UK Operational Marketing

Manager at Arjowiggins Graphic comments “By using recycled papers, such as Cyclus, designers, printers and companies have the opportunity to extend the message of no compromise on the environment to the wider public and this campaign will encourage them to do so.We are the first paper manufacturer to provide all our customers with detailed information about the green credentials of our papers. Environmental declarations are available for all of our product range to inform customers of the stock’s carbon footprint, energy consumption and water consumption.”

Arjowiggins Graphic is also the first paper company to develop the environmental benefit statements. Designers, printers and businesses can request statements to show figures about the equivalent reduction in landfill for any given print job using recycled paper (compared to non recycled paper). The statement can be integrated into documents to highlight CSR commitments with a summary of how using recycled stocks has reduced the environmental impact through measures such as water, energy, carbon dioxide consumption and wood.

Preston based Granthams is the first UK company to sign up as a reseller for IGS UK’s Elements green series of wide-format printing systems. The long established supplier of solutions for the display industry had been looking for more environmentally friendly options to suit its growing customer base, and the Atom 24 and Atom 44, which incorporate Epson MicroPiezo TFP print-heads, ticked all the boxes for durability, totally safe operation and cost-effective ease of use.

A member of the GDL Colourlink Group, a consortium of independent UK graphics’ specialists, Granthams was founded 114 years ago and is a major supplier of sign-making and display products throughout the country. A policy of only offering the best solutions, for which full support is included, has led the company to gain a high reputation for sales and service with leading brand aqueous- and solvent-based printers, consumables and accessories. The addition of IGS UK’s Elements range now satisfies the demand for an essential green option for users wanting to produce durable displays.

Kirsty Reader, general manager of Granthams, states: “Our growing client list comprises large and small businesses, including many offices and organisations who want to produce their durable display print in-house. Until now this hasn’t been practical because of the odours and hazardous chemicals inherent in most solvent-based printing systems.

“The Elements Atom 24 and Atom 44 printers, combined

with H2O inks, matched Krypton Eco-Media and specially configured Chromium RIP, result in a neat, clean and green system which produces high quality output onto a range of materials, including semi-rigids and, even, aluminium composites,” Reader continues. “This turnkey solution also incorporates full support for users, plus minimal maintenance. We believe it is certain to appeal to first-time printer purchasers as well as those who want to incorporate eco-friendly options into their existing range of services.”

With size options of 610 mm (24 inches) and 1117.6 mm (44 inches), the Elements Atom duo is based on industry-proven Epson Stylus Pro printers, modified to facilitate the use of Elements H2O’s proprietary outdoor durable heat-cured water-based resin inks. Epson’s MicroPiezo TFP (Thin Film Piezo) technology ensures that precise dot placement is matched with high performance criteria and excellent print-head durability.

Managing director of IGS UK, Nick Wintle, adds: “Although we’ve only recently launched our Elements family of products, the interest has been exceptionally high from resellers eager to adopt a water-based green wide-format print solution. Granthams was first past the post and we’re pleased to be working with such a high profile, well established specialist.”For further information, or to arrange a demonstration, Granthams can be contacted on Tel: 0845 230 5520, you can also visit their website at www.graphicdiscount.co.uk

CARBon TRuST STAnDARD LAunCheS new SeRVICetHe Carbon Trust Standard Company has made it easier and more cost effective for the UK’s 4.8 million SMEs to cut their carbon footprints, save money and gain the respected Carbon Trust Standard.

A UK first, the new service comes at a time when a ‘perfect storm’ of factors – from rising energy prices to looming regulatory controls – are making carbon-cutting an imperative whatever the size or shape of your enterprise.

SMEs account for 45% of business energy use according to government statistics and are widely recognised as having a vital role to play in the UK drive to cut carbon emissions and foster a low carbon economy. Despite this potential, a lack of time, money and resources has so far prevented many from taking action to cut their carbon emissions.

To address this need, the new Carbon Trust Standard online application process is specifically designed to enable small and growing businesses to be assessed and certified cost effectively against the requirements of the Carbon Trust Standard. The new service is available to organisations with an energy spend of up to £50,000.

While household names such as Marks & Spencer, Microsoft and Boots are among the more than 400 businesses that have achieved the Carbon Trust Standard so far, only 17 are SMEs. The Carbon Trust Standard Company’s new online application service will enable many more SMEs to reap the same commercial rewards as their bigger brothers by helping them easily and rapidly quantify their footprint and enabling them to enhance their environmental credentials by demonstration their carbon measurement and reduction performance.

Harry Morrison, General Manager of the Carbon Trust Standard Company, said: “When added together the potential for savings by SMEs could be up to £1.1 billion

so carbon management is fast becoming a business imperative. To help them act they need tailored expert help to do the right thing and reap the business benefi ts. Our new assessment and certifi cation service is a great way for small and growing companies to accurately assess and benchmark their carbon performance, support their ongoing carbon reduction programmes and most importantly independently certify and promote their carbon saving achievements to key stakeholders.

“The new online service is convenient and relatively low cost to deliver making it more affordable and easier for SMEs to tackle their carbon management performance alongside their other priorities.”

SMEs - from a range of industry sectors - helped to validate the tool via a pilot scheme. On average they have cut their carbon footprint by over 7%, saved nearly 5 tonnes CO2e and now benefit from independent certification of their carbon performance by the Carbon Trust Standard Company.

Simon Harvey, Managing Director at the accounting soft ware specialists, Benchmark Soft ware, said: “There is growing evidence to support the commercial and fi nancial benefi ts of being more carbon effi cient. In our experience, large organisations are increasingly responsible for the carbon in their supply chain and expect their suppliers to have environmental policies and be actively reducing their emissions. In addition, our customers are becoming more savvy and discerning and expect us to do business in a more ethical and sustainable way. The Carbon Trust Standard certifi cation gives us that opportunity to communicate out environmental credentials with integrity to those that matt er.” Anyone wishing to fi nd out more about the service for SMEs, or to register, can visit www.carbontruststandard.com/sme.

Pop up and see me some time…

We do believe in practicing what we preach so here you will see the two pop up banners featured in November’s CSN from www.wherethetradebuys.co.uk standing in our yard.

Now maybe we are surrounded by some cheapskates, Scrooges, or giving them the benefit of the doubt they don’t like messy pine needles but to date, and bearing in mind we only put them up mid November, we have had two customers order the pop-up Christmas tree to be personalised as their corporate Christmas trees to be neatly packed away and used year upon year!

Bott le tops — well almost!

We were recently lucky enough to have one of the latest Mimaki printers on trial and were amazed at all the promotional items we were able to produce. A particular favourite was this magnetic bottle opener which houses openers for both screw and flip top bottles and lives happily on the fridge door.

This A3 size printer can print on anything up to 2 inches thick, and because it’s a cold cure process can handle items that would otherwise melt or crumple.

There’s also a primer solution which can be used to make any surface, including metal, suitable for printing. Do check out Martin’s column on page 20 for a full report and contact the Mimaki exclusive distributors; www.hybridservices.co.uk 01270 501 900

free Solar Panels, Plus free IncomeiF you have large roof space we need you — Solar panels free of charge with no installation or insurance fees – interested? CSMA has found a new partner that will pay our larger printers and suppliers for helping create electricity.

Prosolar have been supplying solar panels to businesses free of charge throughout Europe for many years and are now looking to do the same in the UK.

UK companies are selling solar panels to residential and commercial customers alike on the basis that once you have finished paying for your solar panels in say 10-15 years you will start to show a profit. This figure does not take into account the fact you as a business will have to install, insure, clean, maintain etc your solar panels for the next 25 years.

Prosolar are giving panels away and paying commercial customers a rental income on their otherwise unused roof space for a guaranteed 25 year period. Within this deal they will install, insure, clean, and maintain the panels free of charge for the 25 year period.

This is a fantastic offer for businesses to generate income in times when it’s needed so much, without any outlay. How much did your roof space earn you this year? Think how much it could earn you in the future! • This roof rental deal is aimed at businesses who own

the freehold as the rental income and contract can only be made with the company who owns the freehold so if you don’t own the building pass this information onto the freeholder and you could still generate income from the

reduction in your power costs. • Businesses who lease their building can also make a large

saving by benefitting from guaranteed electricity charge of 4p per unit for the next 25 years

• Prosolar are to install, maintain and insure the complete system at their expense — guaranteed for 25 years.

• Prosolar will pay a yearly rental income of approximately £14k for every 10,000m² of usable roof space in advance, guaranteed for 25 years

• Prosolar will supply electricity generated from the solar panels to the business premises at 4p per unit guaranteed for 25 years

• Prosolar will remove and recycle the solar panels after the 25 year deal and insure the roof is repaired to its original state.

• Businesses will have no financial outlay during the offer process and will only have the costs of their own solicitors

• Businesses are not committed to any deal until Prosolar give them the final contract for signature

• EU 2020 targets are driving this scheme forward as businesses are being pressured to generate their own power by renewable energy.

• With Guaranteed rental income and electricity charges for the next 25 years businesses are better equipped to budget for the future.

CREAZY FOR YOU

We’ve always sold a lot of banners from our own print shop in Brighton but until making contact with Scott of Venture Banners have never had suitable samples to hand. True we have a large banner on the gate but now thanks to our new friend have some ‘handy’ size 1 metre examples on our counter. Furthermore they even state what material they are made of – genius! All the customer’s questions answered!

Historically we have provided heavy vinyl banners but now

have a mesh sample as well which is proving very popular with Brighton residents who have previously had solid vinyl banners ripped from their moorings by the ‘gentle sea breeze’. The mesh variety will of course allow the gale, sorry breeze, to blow through the banner without a problem. Have a look at www.venturetrade.co.uk or fi nd the telephone contact from their advert on the CSN 2011 Yearplanner

at coPy sHoP News we are great fans of the Creazy range of pre-

creased die-cut items that enable us to produce ‘on demand’ personalised mug boxes, wine boxes and even A4 box lids. Downloadable templates are available for all these, and many more items. Do have a look at www.creazy.co.uk — you will be surprised at the new profi t making opportunities open to you.

John Powell has sent us some links of the new websites which have all the templates required for you and your customers. Your research to produce 3-D print starts here: the printers site

Creazy is an innovative range of pre-creased sheets, enabling the production of point of sale, marketing and packaging products without the need for die cutt ing equipment.

Creazy launch free W2P solution. With the introduction of this website,

designing and creating artwork for these products will be easier than ever. www.eazydesigner.com is a web to print solution for the Creazy range of products. The website enables you to select a Creazy product, choose a

design, upload logos, add photographs, personalise with text and create a fi nished printable PDF.

Digital print companies can now direct their clients to the eazydesigner website, where they can create print ready artwork for the Creazy products. On receipt of the artwork the printer simply prints onto the relevant Creazy sheet, conducts the relevant finishing and supplies to the client.

Lyndon Powell, Managing Director of Creazy said ‘We have been eagerly awaiting the launch of this soft ware, we have had extensive discussions with distributors, digital printers and end users of the Creazy products, which have culminated in the launch of this soft ware. Our products have always been well received within the industry and this facility gives the printer the opportunity to improve their productivity and profi ts with an increased return on investment”

The initial launch of the soft ware is populated with Christmas inspired graphics for products such as the wine box and gift box and a range of calendar designs which can be applied to a number of the Creazy products. For more information, please contact Lyndon Powell on [email protected] or tel. 07900 214089 or visit www.creazy.co.uk.

GLASS ACTThe factory foreman inspected the shipment of crystal vases leaving the plant, and approached his new packer. He put his arm around the man’s shoulder and said,

“Well, Ole, I see you did what I asked. Stamped the top of each box, ‘This Side Up, Handle With Care.’

“Yes sir,” the worker replied. “And just to make sure, I stamped it on the bottom too.”

fRAnKInSTeIne AnD MeRThBob Hill and his new wife Betty were vacationing in Europe, as it happens, near Transylvania. They were driving in a rental car along a rather deserted highway. It was late, and raining very hard. Bob could barely see 20 feet in front of the car.

Suddenly the car skids out of control! Bob attempts to control the car, but to no avail! The car swerves and smashes into a tree. Moments later, Bob shakes his head to clear the fog. Dazed, he looks over at the passenger seat and sees his wife unconscious, with her head bleeding! Despite the rain and unfamiliar countryside, Bob knows he has to carry her to the nearest phone.

Bob carefully picks his wife up and begins trudging down the road. After a short while, he sees a light. He heads towards the light, which is coming from an old, large house. He approaches the door and knocks. A minute passes. A small, hunched man opens the door. Bob immediately blurts, “Hello, my name is Bob Hill, and this is my wife Betty. We’ve been in a terrible accident, and my wife has been seriously hurt. Can I please use

your phone?”“I’m sorry,” replied the hunchback, “but

we don’t have a phone. My master is a doctor; come in and I will get him!”

Bob brings his wife in. An elegant man comes down the stairs. “I’m afraid my assistant may have misled you. I am not a medical doctor; I am a scientist. However, it is many miles to the nearest clinic, and I have had a basic medical training. I will see what I can do. Igor, bring them down to the laboratory.”

With that, Igor picks up Betty and carries her downstairs, with Bob following closely. Igor places Betty on a table in the lab. Bob collapses from exhaustion and his own injuries, so Igor places Bob on an adjoining table. After a brief examination, Igor’s master looks worried.

“Things are serious, Igor. Prepare a transfusion.” Igor and his master work feverishly, but to no avail. Bob and Betty Hill are no more.

The Hills’ deaths upset Igor’s master greatly. Wearily, he climbs the steps to his conservatory, which houses his grand piano. For it is here that he has always found solace. He begins to play, and a stirring, almost haunting, melody fills the house.

Meanwhile, Igor is still in the lab tidying up. His eyes catch movement, and he notices the fingers on Betty’s hand twitch, keeping time to the haunting piano music. Stunned, he watches as Bob’s arm begins to rise, marking the beat! He is further amazed as Betty sits straight up! Unable to contain himself, he dashes up the stairs to the conservatory. He bursts in and shouts to his master: “Master, Master! The Hills are alive with the sound of music!”

He noticed with alarm that a salesman’s brain sells for £375.00 a pound. With not a little curiosity he asked the owner why the huge difference in price between the similar meats.

The owner responded with a deadpan look on his face, “Do you realise how many salesmen it takes to get a pound of brains?

fIShY SToRYThree men were sitting on a park bench. The one in the middle was reading a newspaper; the others were pretending to fish. They baited imaginary hooks, cast lines, and reeled in their catch.

A passing policeman stopped to watch the spectacle and asked the man in the middle if he new the other two.

“Oh yes” he said. “They ‘re my friends.”“In that case,” warned the officer, “you’d

MAn PoweRA man awoke one evening to discover prowlers in his storage shed. He immediately called 999, gave his address, to report the prowlers and possible burglary. The operator at the other end said “Are they in your house?” He said they were not, only in his storage shed in back of the house. The operator said there were no cars available at that time. He thanked the operator, hung up the phone and counted to 30 and called again. “I just called you about prowlers in my storage shed. Well you do not have to worry, as I just shot them all dead!” Within seconds there were 3 police cars, an ambulance and fire engine at the scene. After capturing the prowlers red-handed, the policeman asked the caller, “I thought you said you had shot them all!” The man answered, “I thought you said there were no police available!”

SALeS TARGeTAfter gunning his BMW the wrong way down a one-way street, the rather intoxicated young salesman was asked where he thought he was going by a curious police officer.

“I’m not really sure,” confessed the drunk salesman, “but wherever it is, I must be late, because everybody seems to be coming back already.”

ReInDeeR’S SToRY AT ChRISTMAS

According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, while both male and female reindeer grow antlers in the summer each year, male reindeer drop their antlers at the beginning of winter, usually late November to mid-December.

Female reindeer retain their antlers till after they give birth in the spring. Therefore, according to EVERY historical rendition depicting Santa’s reindeer, EVERY single one of them, from Rudolph to Blitzen, had to be a girl.

We should have known... ONLY women would be able to drag a fat man in a red velvet suit all around the world in one night and not get lost.

It was just before Christmas and the magistrate was in a happy mood. He asked the prisoner who was in the dock, ‘What are you charged with?’

The prisoner replied, ‘Doing my Christmas shopping too early.’

‘That’s no crime’, said the magistrate. ‘Just how early were you doing this shopping?’

‘Before the shop opened’, answered the prisoner.

Pupils at a school in Sweden are being terrorised by a drunken Reindeer. Police say the animal has probably been eating fermented apples in a garden, reports Sky News.

Jan Caiman, a police officer in Molndal, said, ‘That could be the problem. We could be dealing with a boozy Reindeer’. Reindeer can weigh as much as 1,100 lb and personnel at the school described the erratic male as ‘completely mad’. The receptionist at the school, near Molndal, in the south of the country, told the Gothenburg Post, ‘The children are really scared’. Police have contacted hunters and said that if the animal does not sober up and calm down, it could be shot.

A Russian couple were strolling down the street in Moscow, when the husband felt a drop hit his nose. ‘I think it’s starting to rain,’ he said to his wife.

‘I don’t think so, it felt more like snow to me,’ she replied.

‘No, I’m sure it was just rain, he said.’ Well, as these things go, they were about to have a major argument about whether it was raining or snowing. Just then they saw a minor communist party official walking toward them. ‘Let’s not fight about it,’ the man said, ‘let’s ask Comrade Rudolph whether it’s officially raining or snowing.’

As the official approached, the husband stopped him and asked, ‘Tell us, Comrade Rudolph, is it officially raining or snowing?’

‘It’s raining, of course,’ he answered and walked on. But the woman insisted: ‘I know that felt like snow!’ To which the man quietly replied: ‘Rudolph the Red knows rain, dear!’

He says to the vet, ‘Doctor, please do something for my Rudolph. His nose won’t light up.

The vet walks out of the room and returns with a pet carrier. He places the pet carrier next to the reindeer, opens it and out steps a cat. The cat walks around the reindeer and sniffs it. The cat then climbs back into the carrier. The animal doctor takes it out of the room and returns. He hands Santa Claus the bill.

Santa gasps, £350. You didn’t do anything for my Rudolph and you’re charging me £350?.

The vet shrugged and replied, ‘That’s the usual charge. £50 for the consultation and £300 for the CAT SCAN.’

Alex was five; all his Christmas presents were always signed, ‘from Father Christmas.’

A little while after Alex had opened all his presents on Christmas morning, we became aware that he was looking quite down in the mouth for no obvious reason.

‘What’s the matter, Al?’ I asked.‘Ummmm, ‘replied Alex slowly, ‘I really

hoped that you and Mummy would give me something for Christmas.’

Freddie and John were fortunate enough to have a season ticket to watch Chelsea. They could not help noticing that there was always a spare seat next (B14) to them and they had a friend who would love to buy a season ticket, especially if all three could have seats together.

One half-time Freddie went to the ticket office and asked if they could by buy the season ticket for B14. The official said that unfortunately the ticket had been sold. Nevertheless, week after week the seat was still empty.

Then on Boxing day, much to Freddie and Eddie’s amazement the seat was taken for the first time that season. John could not resist asking the newcomer, ‘Where have you been all season’. Don’t ask he said, the wife bought the season ticket back last summer, and kept it for a surprise Christmas present.

ChRISTMAS TuRKeYIt was Christmas Eve in at the meat counter and a woman was anxiously picking over the last few remaining turkeys in the hope of finding a large one.

In desperation she called over a shop assistant and said, ‘Excuse me. Do these turkeys get any bigger?’

‘No, madam, ‘he replied, ‘they’re all dead.’

On Christmas Eve, Nathan the copier salesman thought it would be nice to buy his wife a little gift for the next day. Always short of money, he thought long and hard about what that present might be’

Unable to decide, Nathan entered Debenhams and in the cosmetics section he asked the girl, ‘How about some perfume?’ She showed him a bottle costing £75.

‘Too expensive,’ muttered Nathan. The young lady returned with a smaller

bottle for £50. ‘Oh dear,’ Nathan groused, ‘still far too much.’

Growing rather annoyed at Nathan’s meanness, the sales girl brought out a tiny £10 bottle and offered it to him.

Nathan became really agitated, ‘What I mean’, he whined, ‘is I’d like to see something really cheap.’

So the sales girl handed him a mirror.

KISSInG unDeR The MISTLeToe AT The AIRPoRT

Nigel’s business trip had gone quite well, but he was ready to return home to the warmth of his family. Bristol airport, on the other hand, had turned a tacky red and green; the loudspeakers blared annoying renditions of once cherished Christmas carols and ancient pop songs.

Nigel enjoyed Christmas and took it very seriously, and being slightly tired and irritable, he just wanted to get home. He approached the check in desk humming a carol quietly to himself in an attempt to keep his spirits up.

He began to check in his one suitcase when he saw hanging mistletoe. Not real mistletoe, but very cheap plastic with red paint on some of the rounder parts and green paint on some of the flatter and more pointed parts, that could be taken for mistletoe only in a very surreal type of way.

With a considerable degree of irritation and nowhere else to vent it, he said to the girl at the desk, ‘Even if we were married, I would not want to kiss you under such a ghastly mockery of mistletoe.’

‘Sir,’ replied the attendant politely, ‘look more closely at where the mistletoe is.’

‘Ok,’ muttered Nigel, ‘I see that it’s above the luggage scale which is the place you’d have to step forward for a kiss.’

‘That’s not why it’s there.’ ‘Ok, I give up. Why is it there?’ snapped

Nigel irritably. The attendant quipped: ‘It’s there so

you can kiss your luggage good-bye.’
