As a practicing dentist, you are well aware that new materials come and go. Due to its strength, translucency, and life-like esthetics, zirconia is here to stay, so it's important to understand zirconia and the available types. With over 100 different brands of zirconia discs to choose from, it is difficult for dentists to understand the quality differential, and what types of zirconia should be used for which types of restorations.

The bottom line is, there are many things you need to know when prescribing or selecting zirconia restorations for your patients. And this guide will tell you all you need to know to make better decisions.

The zirconia market is the most saturated market in dentistry. It’s no surprise then that not all dental laboratories fully understand the types of zirconia available. If the dental labs you depend on don’t know which materials are the best to use, how can you ensure that your patients will have the best treatment outcomes? And how can you know which materials are the best quality? The truth is, the only way to make sure that you are using the best zirconia is to understand the market and what is available. This guide, filled with industry insight from Bob Cohen, CDT, will give you the foundation you need to make educated decisions that will improve treatment outcomes for your patients.

THE ISSUE

The Issue with Zirconia

In a 2016 survey of dental labs technicians, 27%

of respondents said they did not have adequate understanding of the zirconia market to ensure

they are purchasing the correct material.¹

What Are Your Options?

While there are over 100 options available, this so-called diversity is merely a facade, as there are only about a dozen types of zirconia. Many manufacturers realized that the zirconia market was profitable, and therefore the market became flooded with low-quality zirconia. The worst part is that this zirconia is usually only a few dollars less than the high-quality zirconia, making it difficult for dentists like you to distinguish the high-quality from the low-quality.

KNOW THE MARKET

“Our patients are beyond happy with the service we provided, the margins

are great, the case seated easily…. If you haven't already, I hope you will

give DSG a chance to show you what they can do!” -David A. Foster, DDS

5 Things You Need to Know

1. While low-quality zirconia exists, there is never a case to use lowquality zirconia in restorations, for best patient outcomes.2. Low-quality zirconia is manufactured with many shortcuts duringmining, washing and fabrication, effectively diminishing the inherentmechanical properties of the final restoration.3. Many types of zirconia are sold in discs. High-quality zirconia discsare manufactured with multiple steps that ensure consistent particledensity in every disc.4. When the discs are milled for final prosthesis, a sub-optimallaboratory partner could also cut corners to reduce costs (such asusing low-quality sintering furnaces) and result in compromisedoutcomes for your patients.5. And above all, using a multi-layered zirconia disc made from a high- grade powder that’s pressed correctly and sintered with precision, milled at an experienced and strong laboratory partner is the bestoption for both anterior and posterior restorations.

Zirconia: Brands You Can Trust

Since most zirconia is priced about the same regardless of the quality, how can you ensure that you are using the best quality materials in your restorations?

Here are a few tips:

DID YOU KNOW?

Top materials in dental

zirconia today include

Amann Girrbach's Zolid

FX and Noritake’s Katana

UTML. These are among

the highest-quality, most

esthetic materials

available. They are made

from cubic powder

material and are multi-

layered - the most life-like

monolithic ceramic

restoration available.

Only use well-known manufacturers and name brand discs. Top companies such as Amann Girrbach of Austria, Noritake of Japan and 3M. These companies are known for their ability to beautifully replicate human dentition. Work with a dental lab who employs highly-trained technicians and uses a high-quality manufacturing process, without cutting any corners. Using low-quality zirconia and not partnering with a laboratory to help you during the process could result in sub-optimal results for your patients, such as lower bond strength, crack/fail of the prosthesis, discoloration and malodor in the mouth.
