    DEFINITION.1. It is the teaching of content or information in

    the language being learned with little or nodirect or explicit effort to teach the languageitself separately from the content being taught.(Khranke, 1987: 65).

    2. Refers to an aproach to second language

    teaching in which teaching is organizedaround the content or information thatstudents will acquire, rather than around alinguistic or other type of syllabes.

    Content Definition.

    Refers to the substances or subjectmatter that we learn or communicatethrough language rather than thelanguage used to convey it.

    Role of Content in Curriculum

    Designs.1. Language Across the Curriculum: Language Skills should also be taught in the

    content subjects and not left exclusively for the English teacher to deal with.

    2. Immersion Education: The Foreign language is the vehicle for content

    instruction; it is not the subject of instrucion.

    3. Immigrant On-Arrival Programs: Started in Australia with the Direct Method andalso, used the role play and simulations based on the language need tofunction in specific situations.

    4. Programs for Students with Limited English Proficiency: Giving students thelanguage and other skills needed to enter the regular school curriculum.

    5. Language for Specific Purposes: Is a movement that seeks to serve thelanguage needs of learners who need language in order to carry out specific

    roles.

    Two Central Principles.

    People learn a second language moresuccesfully when they use the language as ameans of acquiring information, rather than asan end in itself. One of the motivations in CBI(Content-Based Instructions). Content-based Instruction better reflectslearnersneeds for learning a second language.This principle reflects to prepare ESL studentsfor academic studies or for mainstreaming.

    Objectives.

    To activate and develop existing Englishlanguage skills. To acquire learning skills and strategies thatcould be applied in future language developmentopportunities.     Stoller (1997) providesa list classifiedaccording to theirinstructional focus andthere are:

    Roles in CBI.1. Role of the teacher : Essential skillsfor any CBI instructors (Stryker andLeaver, 1993:293):

    Varying the format of the classroominstruction;

    Using group work and team-building

    techniques; Organizing jigsaw reading arrangments; Defining the background knowledge and

    language skills requirement for studentssucess;

    Helping students develop copingstrategies;

    Using process approaches to writing; Using appropiate error correction

    techniques;

    and Developing and Maintaining highlevels of student esteem.
