Since the High Holy Day services, Ihave heard from many people who

remarked on how much they liked theservices this year. Time and again, theystated that the highlight of the serviceswas the music shared by cantorialsoloist Paula Drues and Rabbi Greene. Many commented on the beauty of theharmony between them. We wereindeed blessed to have these twovoices guide us in our prayers.

Music is an integral part of our faith.I know of no other religion which hastwo spiritual leaders: a Rabbi and aCantor. Music has been an integral partof CKI throughout our history. Forseveral decades we had a wonderful

choir which sang every Friday night andon the High Holidays, providing us withmany beautiful melodies. The Torahschool children have frequentlyparticipated in a choir. Additionally, wehave featured concerts by leadingcantors and musicians from around thecountry. Each of these special eventshas been well attended.

We once again have an opportunity tobring music to our community. Lastyear, a very generous contribution wasgiven to fund music programs at CKI. Inmemory of her parents, Abraham M.and Anna Rose Seltzer, Sarah Frischbegan a fund for musical programs. Weare seeking ideas which will bring more

music to CKI. The initial meeting of amusic committee will be on Tuesdaynight, November 2, 7 PM at CKI. Pleasecome to share your ideas. If you areinterested, but can not attend, contactRabbi Greene.

There is another way we can allguarantee the future of music in ourcongregation. Contributions to thisfund, for any occasion, can be made bysending the form which is in Ha Koleach month.

The Board of Directors of CongregationKneseth Israel and Hazzan Alan Smolenhave reached a mutually-agreedresolution of the various disputesbetween parties. Without either partyadmitting or denying any liability, theBoard has agreed to pay Alan Smolen$20,000 over a three month period oftime. The Board’s decision to settle, while difficult, was ultimately driven bywhat was deemed to be in the bestinterest of the congregation. The Boardand Smolen have agreed to withdraw, and not to file further any grievances orcomplaints for any activities related toSmolen’s employment with CKI.

An on-going criticism of Americaneducation is the “dumbing down” of

curricula and the lowering of standardsin schools and on state and nationaltests. A parent raised that issue to me afew weeks ago in regards to our TorahSchool. Because of the changingleadership, both religious andeducational, this parent seemed to beconcerned that we are now going to“lower the bar” on our standards. Notexactly. If nothing else, we are alwaysstriving to “raise the bar.” For example,in Bet and Gimel Hebrew classes, theteachers, Tova Kaplan and DebbeAstrug, have started to incorporate aconversational Hebrew segment in theirweekly studies. So rest assured, please, our standards are not changing. Theteachers are still presenting and alwaysstrengthening their individual classlessons. The entire school has anatmosphere of excitement and greatinvolvement!

Here’s a sampling of the outstandinglessons that have taken place in just thefirst three weeks of school:

• Preschool with Wendy Barrash –The children learned about RoshHashanah in their very first meeting…

• Kindergarten with Tova Kaplan –The kinder have learned aboutShabbat, constructed their own littlesukkah,“visited” the bimah and lookedat the Torah…

• 1st grade with Judi Schweinler –The children made New Year’s cardsand talked about the “birthday of theworld” / creation and askingforgiveness. (Judi says,“Suchinteresting thoughts from the ‘mouthsof babes!’ A lot of fun!”)…

• 2nd grade with Adele Stein – Aftercompleting lessons to learn the letterGimel, the students learned newwords, studied the Torah story ofNoah’s ark from The Bible from Alef toTov (a gimel word – geshem: rain), andtalked about the rainbow’s six colors…

• 3rd grade with Jessica Astrug –After a discussion about kosher andIsraeli foods, the class created a Jewishrestaurant menu…

• 4th grade with Aaron Wolfinshon –During a class session, the studentsconsidered the question:“How do weknow God exists?” Since we cannotsee God, how do we make ourselvesaware of everything He has created…

• 5th grade with Marc Zemel – Theclass has had several in-depthdiscussions about Rosh Hashanah,Yom Kippur and Sukkot. What didthese holidays mean to our ancestors? What do they mean to us in today’sworld? The lessons in this class showthat we are a link in the chain ofJudaism, just as our ancestors were –L’dor V’dor – from generation togeneration…

• 6th grade with Wanda Pitzele – Theclass is learning about qualities ofheroes. They have also discussed HankGreenberg, Sandy Koufax and ShawnGreen’s decision not to play ball onYom Kippur. How do you handle thedilemma of choosing between religionand school events…

• 7th grade with Marty Wolfinsohn –Lessons in this class are designed toincrease the students’ understandingof Judaism and the Holocaust…

• Confirmation class with Ron Raben– Focusing on “the many faces ofJudaism,” the class has discussed holyobjects – both religious and secular –and considered the case of Lt. Ben

Shalit who wanted to register in Israelas Nationality: Jewish, Religion: None. That led to group involvement on“What is a Jew” and “Problems YouFace as A Jew in Today’s Society.”…

• Hebrew Classes with Marc Zemel,Adele Stein, Tova Kaplan, DebbeAstrug, Jessica Astrug, RabbiGreene – Learning Hebrew continuesat a quick pace as students increasetheir reading and speaking knowledgeof the language (i.e., the Bet studentsare building a Hebrew dictionary).

And we can’t ignore the cadre ofoutstanding aides who assist teachers,me and individual students. MorganStanczak, Shayna Stein, MichellePiraino, and Michael Rosenfeld allhelp particular teachers in selectedclassrooms. (Even Dori Stein who is noton the this list helps her mom in 2ndgrade.) Emily Burker and Jason Sigalare the troubleshooters who work inthe office, in classes when needed andwith selected students. MichaelRosenfeld has already started tutoringseveral students in Hebrew.

As if this isn’t enough going on, our“music man,” Terry Shapiro is with us acouple of Sundays each month to workwith the children in music. He’s greatfun! And Earl Sternfeld continues totutor the b’nei mitzvah students.

(continued on page 6)

CKI “music man” Terry Shapiro has an attentive audience duringmonthly Sunday music assembly for Torah School students.

Many Thanks to…..

Wanda Pitzelle for hosting our OctoberSisterhood meeting & dinner in herSukkah. It was a great success.

Et Schillmoeller and Karen Sigal forputting together the new memberdinner. All enjoyed a great meal withour new synagogue friends.

Being a member of CKI sometimestakes a little sweat (like when the air

conditioning isn’t working exactlyright), and sometimes a little tears. Thistime, we’re asking members to considergiving a little blood. (One pint will do.)

On Sunday, November 7, CKI will hostits Second-Ever Blood Drive, from 8:30to 12:30, in the Social Hall.

The Drive is being conducted with theassistance of Heartland Blood Centers, anon-profit medical organization whichsupplies blood to the area hospitalsserving CKI members, such as Sherman,Provena St. Joseph, Delnor, and Central-DuPage. If you or someone you knowhad surgery locally in the past yearrequiring a blood transfusion, chancesare the blood came from a Heartlanddonor.

Last year’s drive was a smashingsuccess, with nearly 30 units of blooddonated. This year, we’d like to increase

our donation by 25%. Since each donorcan only offer one unit, that means we’llneed to have 25% more participation. And since some prospective donorsmay be turned away due to medicalreasons, a minimum of 50 volunteerdonors should come forward.

We’ll have twice the number of cots thisyear, meaning that the wait will beshortened significantly. If you’re here todrop off your children for SundaySchool, this will be a perfect way tospend the morning. And don’t forgetthe juice and treats afterward!

If you’ve never donated blood before,it’s easy, quick (in most cases thedonation itself takes less than 15minutes) and relatively painless. Mostimportant, IT’S A MITZVAH!

The Drive is being coordinated by theSocial Action Committee. Reservationsare strongly suggested. To pre-registerfor a donation time, please e-mail PaulGlaser at [email protected] if you know you can’t donate thisyear but would like to volunteer to helpwith the registration process thatmorning, let Paul know.

For more information on blooddonation, check out Heartland’swebsite: www.heartlandbc.org.

In the meantime, some excellent foodsources of iron include chard, spirulina, blackstrap molasses, tofu, thyme, parsley, cinnamon, and tumeric. We’ll beoffering a special prize to the personwho comes up with the best recipecombining all these ingredients. So getto work, eat healthy, and we’ll see youall on November 7.

ROLL UP YOUR SLEEVES. SAVE A LIFE. FOR REAL.

To date, we’ve had two large all-schoolactivities. One was the making andhanging of decorations in the Sukkah. And if you were in synagogue onSunday, October 10th, you saw thestudents participate in an art programabout Jewish stained glass and thencreate their own original piece of art tobe made into a magnet, mug, t-shirt, etc.as a fund raiser for Shalom Academy. The Solomon Schechter (Northbrook)art teacher facilitated the activity.

In my 40-plus years of teaching, I havealways set my expectations high sostudents have to reach for them byaccepting challenges and stretchingbeyond their normal limits. I know thatall of our Torah School teachers do thesame.

So, have we lowered the bar? I don’tthink so. This place is ALIVE! Whenyou’re here on a Sunday morning, juststop for a moment, stand quietly, andlisten to the sounds of school. Feel theenergy and the wheels turning. Andthink about this awesome quotationfrom the Talmud: “The world enduresonly for the sake of the breath ofschool- children.”

See you in school!

L’chaim,

Shalom Academy News

Thanks to Men’s Club Handymen, Jerry Himmelfarb and Perry Pitzele, we nowhave a bulletin board in the hallway outside Shalom Academy. Next time you are

in the building, please stop and check out pictures and projects of what our studentsare doing.

Thank you also to the Torah School for participating in an artistic fundraiser, OriginalWorks. The artwork the students created will be available to families on a variety ofitems, such as mugs, tee shirts, mouse pads (for computers, not homes for mice),potholders and note cards, to mention a few! When we are done with the fundraiser, the original works will be made into a huge mural.

We are still accepting new students: If congregants know of a family with a pre-school aged child, please try to connect us. We will not exceed a 6:1 student toteacher ratio. With that kind of attention, preschoolers excel. We have a greatteacher, a terrific program, and room for more students!

What is Rosh Chodesh?

The celebration of the New Moon is

called Rosh Chodesh. It is

considered a semi-festival. In

Talmudic times, whenever a witness

testified that they had observed the

crescent of the new moon, the

highest court (Sanhedrin), after

verifying the testimony, declared the

New Moon’s arrival official. This,

then, became an occasion for

celebration. Special sacrifices were

offered in the temple, the Shofar

was blown, and the population

celebrated in a festive manner. To

the prophets the New Moon,

celebration was equated in

importance with the Sabbath.

In the synagogue proper on the

Shabbat prior to Rosh Chodesh, the

new month is commemorated with

its own special prayer. This prayer is

not recited before Rosh Chodesh

Tishri since that month is already

blessed with many holidays

Some months we celebrate Rosh

Chodesh for two days. This is

because some Jewish months have

29 days and some have 30 days. The

moon actually makes revolutions

around the earth every 29 days. The

New Moon thus actually appears

every 30 days. When a month is 29

days long the first day of the next

month is considered the Rosh

Chodesh (which literally means

“head of the month”). In months

where there are 30 days the New

Moon actually appears on the 3oth

day of the month. In these months

the arrival of the New Moon is

celebrated for two days – the first

day of the new month and the

preceding day (the 30th day of the

previous month). In these 30 day

months the counting of the new

moon (the first day of the new

month) starts with the second day

of the New Moon celebration. This

practice may have started to imitate

Rosh Hashana. The first day of Tishri

Ask the Ritual Committee

7

is the only day mandated by the

Torah as Rosh Hashana (Leviticus

23:24). In Talmudic times the law

was changed so Rosh Hashana

became mandatory to be a two day

holiday. The same was done for

Rosh Chodesh. These two day

holidays were treated as one and

referred to as “a long day.”

Please take a moment to respond to this request. Why? Beause it would be

nice to speak your Hebrew name when calling you to the Bimah for an

Aliyah/Honor. We have a few of the member names on a list that has been

maintained over the years. We need to update that list with every

congregant’s Hebrew name, so we may alphabetize the list and call you by

your proper Hebrew name.

Please respond ASAP and send your names to me, c/o CKI ,or send them to

my email address which is: [email protected]

Jewish Healing Network of Chicago presents its third-annualcommunity wide conference, A Jewish Response to Illness andLoss: Learning from the Book of Job. The conference will featureRabbi Shira Stern, Director of the Jewish Institute for Pastoral Carein New York City. As Jews, we share a collective response to crisis, finding comfort and answers in traditional texts and meaningfulritual. Sometimes, though, the questions are overwhelming. Whyhas this happened to me? How do we sustain ourselves when weface spiritual crisis brought on by illness and loss, and how can weoffer support and solace to those who will turn to us for comfort.Together, we will explore the Book of Job for guidance.

Sunday, November 14, 2004 ~ 1:00 p.m.

Location: Bernard Horwich JCC, 3003 W. Touhy Ave., Chicago

A healing circle will be held after the lecture.

We Need A FewGood Ads

Advertisers in the 2004 Ha Kol arereceiving renewal letters this

month for their ads for 2005. We're veryproud of Ha Kol. We think it reflects theenthusiasm, energy and range ofactivities that will make CongregationKneseth Israel a special place to be formany years to come.

We've worked hard to keep the new Ha Kol affordable while looking like “a million bucks.” Our advertisers helpmake this all possible. If you, orsomeone you know, has interest inplacing an ad in Ha Kol for 2005, youmay contact Zahava Raz at thesynagogue office for furtherinformation. Ha Kol is a great way toreach a growing and dynamic JewishCommunity in the Fox Valley.

Yahrtzeiten

We recall with loving memory those whose yahrtzeiten will be commemoratedduring the coming weeks, and those whose names will be read in the synagogue at Friday evening and Saturday morning Shabbat services during the month of November. It is appropriate that members of their families are present when these names are read.

There are two dates listed above on our yahrtzeit list. The first is the day of the service at which the namewill be read. The second is the actual date of the yahrtzeit and memorial candles should be lit on thepreceding evening. An asterisk after the name indicates a plaque is affixed to the Memorial Tablet.
