Dear CKI friends, Over the past couple years, its been my pleasure to remodel and maintain the congregation’s website. I truly appreciated all the incredible feed back, suggestions, and comments. I hope that it has become an extra tool/resource for you to use to keep informed of things going on in the CKI community. As I move on to my college years however, it is unfortu- nate for me that I will not be able to continue maintaining the website. While I really enjoyed doing it, it requires much work, and being away for so long of the year, it would be impossible to do. For this reason, I am proudly passing on the responsibilities of the synagogue’s webpage to Jake Marshall. Over the past couple of weeks, Jake and I have been in contact. It sounds like he has great ideas for the site, and I am sure he’ll do a great job keep- ing it up-to-date for the time to come. Thanks again for all your support and feedback as I maintained the page. It’s been a pleasure. I thought I wasn’t going towrite anything this month. Ya’

know – take a break! But I thought I’dmake a quick list of some things thatmight be of interest. So with no specialstory, event, or insight – here goes:

• The kids in Torah School collectedapproximately $500.00 in tzedakahmoney this year. That’s all their pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters each week.Often I’d find dollar bills, and sometimeseven $5.00 bills. This amount is $100.00plus over last year. How awesome isthat!?! This year, we will donate half ofthe money to Magen David Adom inIsrael, and the other half to Crohn’sDisease in honor of Jake Marshall andMatt Wolf.

• Mark your calendar now for our annual“SCHOOL REGISTRATION AND MEM-BER PICNIC” on Sunday, August 27th.As always, we will have entertainment, food grilled by our own Men’s Club, school registration, and just that goodold CKI mishpacha camaraderie. Watchfor more information in August’s Hakol.

As I did last summer, let me offer yousome good books I have read during thepast year. I think you’ll like some of them.

• A Walk in the Woods – Bill BrysonBryson sets out to walk the 2200 mileAppalachian Trail. Along the way hemeets a cast of assorted hilarious andbizarre characters. It’s a good laugh-out-loud adventure – almost a modernHuckleberry Finn in regards to the folkshe meets.

• Notes From a Small Island – Bill Bryson“…a delightfully irreverent jaunt aroundthe unparalleled floating nation that hasproduced zebra crossings, Shakespeare,Twiggie Winkie’s Farm, and places withnames like Farleigh Wallop and Titsey.”

This is a very entertaining read, especial-ly if you’ve been around England andLondon.

• Bel Canto – Ann PatchettA spell-binding novel of a group of peo-ple who gather for a lavish birthdayparty somewhere in South America. Allis wonderful until a group of terroriststakes the entire party hostage. It is astory of unexpected bonds of friendshipand love between the most unlikely ofpeople.

• The Magician’s Assistant – AnnPatchettA beautifully told story of a magiciannamed Parsifal and his wife, Sabine. Sheis his assistant for twenty years until hedies and learns that his non-existentfamily really does exist.

• Curious Minds: How a Child Becomesa Scientist – John Brockman, ed.A series of fascinating essays about 27 orthe world’s most interesting scientistsand how moments and events in theirchildhoods set them on the paths thatwould define. The questions posed is:“What happened when you were a kidthat led you to pursue a life in science?”The essays go from Mary CatherineBateson who discovered she wanted tobe an anthropologist while studyingHebrew to Robert Sapolsky, a Stanfordprofessor of biology who argued with arabbi over a passage in the Bible.

• The Secret History of the PinkCarnation – Lauren WilligNothing more than a “fun” read recallingthe swash-buckling antics of the ScarletPimpernel, the Purple Gentian… and the“Pink Carnation?” You’ll know the answerlong before you finish because it is sopredictable, but it’s fun nonetheless.

Kol Kneseth Israel is published monthly byCongregation Kneseth Israel of Elgin, Illinois. It ismailed to CKI members via first class postage.

Ha Kol Information

Torah School News

• Snow Flower and the Secret Fan – Lisa SeeA haunting and beautifully written novelof women in 19th century China – inespecially one remote Hunan county –and the mysterious relationship of theirfemale friendships.

• The Pleasure Was Mine – Tommy HaysAn enriching and moving novel aboutreal people in the large and smallmoments of life. It is a story that tells ofthe meaning of family and the power oflove.

• And right now I’m reading Tim Russert’sWisdom of Our Fathers: Lessons andLetters from Daughters and Sons.Following Russert’s bestseller about hisfather, Big Russ and Me, this book is acompilation of letters from sons anddaughters who wanted to tell the storiesof their fathers. So far, it is endearingand filled with heart

So enjoy the summer.

See ya’ at the picnic in August!

Sisterhood News

One of the nice things about sum-mer, is that we have the opportuni-

ty to review the past programming yearand plan for the next one. We startedour term of office, intending to keepthings simple and not offer many pro-grams. But as the months passed, themomentum grew and we ended uphosting lots of events. Some programswere tried-and-true, while others wereoffered for the first time. Of course, wedidn’t accomplish this on our own. Many Sisterhood members made thingshappen. It was great and we had fun! Allin all, we feel that our first year in officewas successful and we are looking for-ward to our second year.

We’ll use the quiet days of summer tochart out next year’s programs. Look fornotices of planning meetings. If youwould like to run a program or project, please let us know. We know that you’llenjoy it immensely. And if you’re not inthe mood to take charge, make surethat we know your program ideas. Thewomen of CKI Sisterhood are a diversegroup. If you’re interested in a subject or

activity, chances are that others areinterested, too. So, if you’re keen to dosomething at CKI Sisterhood, please tellus. We always welcome new ideas. Itkeeps things fresh!

Enjoy the time off from school and win-ter routines. But start to think aboutnext year. It will be here before youknow it!

Happy summer!

…to JOE ROSENFELD and BILLMcFARLANE for all their work in land-scaping and “greening” up the area inthe back of the synagogue by the officedoor. Through their muscle, it is becom-ing a wonderful little garden area com-plete with bench and birdbath. If youhaven’t seen it, take a stroll back there.

…and to FERN RABEN for her garden-ing expertise and advice in transform-ing that area.

…and to WENDY SHANKMAN for dig-ging, planting, and adorning the areawith hostas and plants.

HonorableMenschen...

Yahrtzeiten

We recall with loving memory those whose yahrtzeiten will be commemoratedduring the coming weeks, and those whose names will be read in the synagogue at Friday evening and Saturday morning Shabbat services during the month of July. It is appropriate that members of their families are present when these names are read.

There are two dates listed above on our yahrtzeit list. The first isthe day of the service at which the name will be read. The second is the actual date of the yahrtzeit and memorialcandles should be lit on the preceding evening. An asteriskafter the name indicates a plaque is affixed to the Memorial Tablet.
