Kabbalistic Sefirot. Each week represents one ofthose attributes, the first one being chesed orlovingkindness. Join with me each Shabbatafter Kiddush as we study each week’sattribute. We will use a book, Everyday Holinessby Alan Moranis who teaches Mussar classes allover the country. I have been studying Mussarfor two years with my chevruta study partnerand am excited to share this part of countingthe Omer with you.

Ultimately, that is the purpose of acongregation—to create holy moments in timeand space while building a community. Toallow a sacred space so that we can becomethe best that we can become.

May is poignant with memories. This year willbe no exception as we mark Yom Hashoah onMay 4 at 7:00 PM. We will begin with the celloprelude by Ernest Bloch played by one of theElgin Symphony Orchestra’s cellist, Mark Kuntz, and then will be treated to a documentary onthe Israeli Philharmonic, many of whoseoriginal musicians were rescued from theHolocaust. While the Holocaust is a difficultsubject, this will be an uplifting evening.

We then move into Yom Hazikaron, IsraeliMemorial Day and Yom Ha’atzma’ut. This yearwe will mark Yom Hazikaron out at the BluffCity Cemetery where we will bury our “genizah”collection—old prayer books, photocopies thatcontain the name of G-d, old talitot. Pleasebring items to me in my office before May 11for proper burial.

Don’t forget: Remembering and numbering ourdays, calls us into action as well. On theweekend we read the Holiness Code, whichincludes the line, “Don’t stand idly by while yourneighbor bleeds.” We will have our annualblood drive in the synagogue parking lot.People who have donated with HeartlandBlood Centers have most likely already beencalled. I know I have. New donors are alwayswelcome.

One way we remember is to celebrateanniversaries. I am delighted to celebrate HerbGross’s 80th birthday in the community and theanniversary of Leonard Kofkin’s Bar Mitzvah thismonth. Others will no doubt rememberwedding anniversaries and anniversaries ofgraduations. If you are celebrating a graduationor wedding this Spring, please let us know.Consider hosting an Oneg Shabbat or Kiddushfor these special events and letting us allcelebrate with you!

(Tell your friends, too!)

At this time last year, I was busypreparing to becomeSisterhood's new President. I set

some goals for myself and for ourorganization. Some of the goals have beensuccessful, while others so-so. I will be meetingwith the Sisterhood Board on Sunday, May 1, toevaluate our Sisterhood and to create someshort-range and long-range goals.

However, I must admit that I fantasize abouthaving a meeting with the entire group ofCKI women. I want to know what you likeabout our Sisterhood? What are we doingwell? What are you enjoying? What areas doyou feel could use some changes and/orimprovements? What ideas do you have forhow to make positive changes? What is yourvision for the next year? Two years from now?Five to ten years from now? Your feedback isimportant. I am interested in hearing yourthoughts. Feel free to contact me by phone,847-464-2959, or by email,[email protected]. Please note that Isaid the entire group of women. Thatincludes Sisterhood members and those thatare not currently members.

Our society tends to move at a quick rate. Itseems like we, and our families, areoccasionally overbooked. This can be achallenge for individuals and organizationslike our Sisterhood. For several weeks now, Ihave been recruiting women to become partof the various teams of Sisterhood. These arethe teams that truly help keep our synagoguerunning smoothly. My thinking for creatingteams is as follows:

• Individual ideas can be improved and moreexciting when they are discussed with otherpeople.

• Being on a team gives each individual anopportunity to speak up and to give andreceive feedback.

• Meeting as a team gives direct andimmediate feedback to the leaders involved.

• Being on a team gives members a chance tolearn more about how we operate, and whatwe are planning.

• Team members have an opportunity, as theyare available, to volunteer in whatevercapacity they feel comfortable.

• These teams will make our organization runmore smoothly and efficiently. What afabulous perk for all of us at CKI!

• Volunteers are not just doing a mitzvah,(good deed), but are learning from eachother, making connections, doing things theyenjoy, and if desired, are given opportunitiesfor learning new skills.

• As we volunteer, we give children, and therest of the our community, a validation thatour synagogue is an important place, andthat we care about our Jewish communityand want to keep this place runningsmoothly.

From my own observations, I have seen thatwhen people volunteer a little of their time, ittruly makes a huge difference. Please considervolunteering. Contact me. I will be happy toadd you to any team that interests you.Currently we have teams for the following:Baking and Cooking, Fundraising, Hospitality,Kitchen, and Programming. I would also love tostart a team for Publicity. This team would helpthe other teams as needed.

Please do not feel fearful that by signing up,you are making a huge time commitment. Please keep in mind that the amount oftime you put into Sisterhood is entirely upto you. I can tell you that there is a strongcorrelation between involvement andindividuals feeling successful and fulfilled.Remember, the more you put into Sisterhood, the more you are giving to our synagogue. What a worthy mitzvah.

I am blessed to be working with a greatteam of women that are holding variouspositions within our board. I thank each andevery one of them for all that we haveaccomplished thus far.

All the ladies are invited and encouraged toattend our next Sisterhood meeting at CKI, onMonday, May 9, at 7:00 PM. We have severalimportant issues on the agenda:

• We will vote on a by-law change. Theproposed change is to eliminate our sharingresponsibility for the CKI library. This is asynagogue responsibility, yet, currently in ourby-laws it is listed as one of our standingcommittees. We will vote on this changeduring the meeting.

• We will share the outcomes from our May 1Board Meeting. This will include ourself-evaluation and discussion of ourshort-range and long-range goals.

• Thirdly, I was asked to put on the agenda ourreconsidering our disaffiliation with Women'sLeague for Conservative Judaism (WLCJ). As away to be more informed of potentialbenefits, we will have Debbi Green,Immediate Past President for the CentralGreat Lakes region, in attendance. She willgive a short presentation and will answerquestions. If we are at a point where we canvote on this potential change, we will do itduring the meeting. If we do not have thetime, we have a tentative date scheduled inJune.

I want to send out a big thank you to thefollowing people:

Risa Cohen for instruction at our first Buncoevent.

Karen Bender for the Bunco evening treats, and making a mini recipe book from ourPassover Taste and Share.

Sue Johnson and Marcy Cohen Tremmel forplanning our pre-Passover Taste and Share. Itwas a wonderful event!

We want to let everybody know that the next activity of the TikkunOlam committee is a blood drive in the CKI social hall on

Sunday, May 15, from 8:00 AM until noon.

Although Passover is now behind us, we still remember the subject ofblood bookending our journey from slavery to freedom.

While blood was the first plague, it was also used to protect the hous-es of the children of Israel during the 10th plague when we had torush for our freedom and could not even take the time for our breadto rise. This is also how it is in today's world, when we do not knowwhen we will need life saving blood.

The Talmud says that whoever savesone life saves an entire world, so please join us on May 15 where wecan save the world many times over by giving blood...

Dinner &Services

As many of you already know, two highly valued members of our

community, Paul and Lynn Glaser, are leaving to go off toretirement in North Carolina. We will all miss them, especially for the

Becky Albert, is planned in their honor on June 3, at 6:00 PM.

Thanks to both Men’s Club and Sisterhood, who will be underwriting

part of the cost of the event, the price will be $20.00 per adult and

$10.00 per child under the age of 12 years old. To use one of Paul’s favorite

phrases, an extra charge will be assessed for fressers☺.

We ask that you send in your reservations and payment by May 25.

Also, a special gift will be presented to Paul and Lynn. If you would like to
