Guide to Selected Artists 2013-2014

Introduction Yet another year has gone past and the time has come to present the Guide to Selected Artists 2013-2014.

Again there were over 100 applicants and, as usual, the overall standard was very high. It is always a difficult decision as to who goes into this guide, as only a quarter of the applicants are able to be selected.

This guide is one of many tools promoting groups can use to find artists for their concerts which is why, in addition to the chosen artists, there are adverts from other artists and information as to other sources of support. Hopefully you may find some of them useful.

The Concert Promoters Group (CPG) is well aware of the financial strain that some promoters are feeling. This is a matter of concern for promoters, artists, agents and audiences. Hopefully the range of artist fees available will enable you to engage artists at reasonable costs. It is worth emphasising the falling costs if artists are engaged for six or more performances. Working with other promoters in your area, it would be possible to get a significant discount if small tours could be arranged.

My thanks to George Wolfe and Jean Richards in particular, and to all members of the CPG for their help and support.

Best wishes for the 2013-2014 season.

46 - MAKING MUSIC CONCERT PROMOTERS’ GROUP

In addition to Making Music’s Concert Promoters’ Group, there are other organisations that do the listening for you and recommend artists:

The Young Concert Artists Trust (YCAT) YCAT chooses some of the best young players around. The fees per concert for artists new to the scheme are often very reasonable and you are guaranteed excellent artists - some of them appear in this brochure and a real bargain may be found. www.ycat.co.uk

The Tillett Trust Selects a small number of artists (usually three soloists or ensembles each year) and offers a substantial grant against their normal fees. www.thetilletttrust.org.uk (see Young Artists’ Platform and listings under ‘Current/ previous winners’)

The Countess of Munster Musical Trust Chooses a selection of young artists who are then available, often with an accompanist, for only £75 plus travel costs (large ensembles are more expensive). You will need to apply to join their scheme, although there is usually a waiting list. www.munstertrust.org.uk (see listings under ‘Recital Scheme’)

The Tunnell Trust Awards paid engagements to selected young chamber musicians throughout Scotland, with concert promoters paying only travel costs. www.tunnelltrust.org.uk

The Wigmore Hall London International String Quartet Competition Takes place every three years. The prize winners are worth booking before they become famous! www.wigmore-hall.org.uk/competitions/string-quartet

The Royal Over-Seas League Is worth checking out for the latest prizewinners. www.roslarts.co.uk

Haverhill Soloist Competition Provides prize-winning soloists to concert promoters who agree in advance to take the winner of the specific categories. www.haverhillsinfonia.co.uk

The Live Music Now Is worth considering, especially if you are interested in combining a concert with an event in an unusual venue; the scheme was set up to take music into places where it may not normally be heard. www.livemusicnow.org.uk

How to book a Selected Artist

Choose an artist and check the current number of bookings at www.makingmusic.org.uk/artistbookingprogress. The current bookings page shows confirmed and potential bookings to date, which will indicate the fee levels that are likely to be reached.

Speak to the artist's contact indicating your interest in making a booking from the Concert Promoters’ Group brochure. You can either make a definite booking, or a provisional booking on the basis that the fee comes down to a particular level.

If you decide to go ahead, let us know using the register interest form at www.makingmusic.org.uk/registerinterest. We use the information you provide on this form to update our current bookings page. Please note that completion of this form does not replace the booking process.

The contact for the artist should inform you when the fee comes down to the next level, but it pays to check this before you sign a contract as well as in the period leading up to the concert.

When you sign a contract, we advise that you agree the fee to be ’as determined by the number of bookings through the Concert Promoters’ Group brochure’ so that you get the benefit of the sliding scale of fees.

We would also ask you to acknowledge the scheme in your annual brochure and programmes using the following wording: ‘This concert has been supported by the Making Music Promoters’ Group scheme. www.makingmusic.org.uk/promoters

Please note that the fees in this brochure relate to bookings in the period September 2013 to August 2014. The cut-off point for making bookings on the sliding scale is the end of June 2013. Bookings outside this period should be negotiated without reference to the scheme.

The 1-6+ concert fees do not normally include travel costs, which must be added on top of the fee.

All fees assume that you will provide accommodation if necessary.

VAT at the current rate is included in the fees where appropriate.

Do look at the advertisements in this brochure, as there may be artists who are just right for your current season. There are also some artists who are at an early stage in their career, whose low fees are attractive to promoters who cannot afford more established artists

Background information

Selection We advertise our Selected Artist Scheme in various places, and as a result agents as well as individual artists apply to be in the scheme. Forms are sent out to everyone on our database in July of each year and include a request for a list of forthcoming engagements. We aim to send a listener to report on performances by all artists who provide appropriate concert details (we are always looking to increase the number of listeners – see contact details below if you’re interested in applying). In February or March of the following year, the Concert Promoters’ Group reviews all the reports and undertakes the difficult selection process. The list of selected artists is first published in our newsletter and on our website.

Programme suggestionsSome artists have set programmes (with associated reduced rehearsal time), so the fees agreed with them reflect this narrower choice. Others will be open to negotiation on their programme; check this when you make a preliminary enquiry.

AvailabilityArtists do belong to other ensembles and have other commitments so it pays to have a few dates in mind when trying to make a booking.

Fees per concertWe try to cater for our wide range of members, all of whom wish to book good-quality professional artists. For that reason the 6+ concert fee for artists ranges from £350 to over £2000. However, we try to have at least a third of the artists’ fees at the lower end of this range, and this year there are 9 out of 24 at £750 or below for 6+ bookings.

2012 season includes recitals at the Berlin Philharmonie, the Leipzig Gewandhaus, the Palais des Beaux Arts in Brussels – and a fiveconcert series at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw.

… and introducing Joy Lisney violoncelloThe flowering artistry of Joy Lisney. Still in her teens and yet

playing with an aplomb and rapport, a definition and vitality,

an insight and ardour that many cellists better known and

more experienced would do well to honour. Her sensitive

musicianship was manifest. Her lyricism was uplifting and

haunting. Her abrasive vitality in Suite Italienne was

sensational. The Chopin was a revelation.
