These works are counterbalanced by’Entr’acte’, ’Méditation’ and ’Two Interludes’: musicalmoments of contemplative repose.

Ghosts and Shadows

Beethoven’s youthful Horn Sonata was composed in 1800, andwritten for Giovanni Punto, a horn player who wasmore famousthan Beethoven at the time. Whilst the performer’s legacy hasbeen lost tohistory,Beethoven’sworkhas stood the testof time.Poulenc’s Sonata for Violin and Piano was published in 1944,and is dedicated to the memory of the Spanish poet FedericoGarcia Lorca (1899-1936),whowasexecuted for his liberal viewsduring the Spanish Civil War. Chopin’s beautiful Nocturne in Cminor was published posthumously, due to the fact that thecomposer expressly forbade its performance, suggesting thatany performer who disobeyed would be haunted by his ghost! The performance culminates in Brahms’ elegiac masterpiece of1865 (the same year as Cranleigh School’s foundation),composed as a wordless requiem for his mother.

Francis Poulenc

'Praise' is the strong thematic link between these two dynamictwentieth-century works for large chorus and orchestra, this year'scollaboration between the musical forces of the School andCranleigh Choral Society. Poulenc's evocative setting of the Gloriatext has become a favourite choral work since its premiere in 1961.It is typical of the composer's style; in turn dramatic, quirky andpowerfully sensuous.

A perfect complement is John Rutter's popular 1990 setting ofMary's hymn of praise, followingGabriel's annunciation of the birthof Christ. The composer was inspired by "jubilant celebrations offeasts of the Virgin Mary in Hispanic cultures" and conceived thework as a bright Latin-flavoured joyful fiesta bursting withtunefulness and colour.
