ContextThere is evidence that the use of concept maps to represent the relationships between ideas helps to externalise and enhance the understanding of complex subjects. In this assignment you will demonstrate your understanding of some of the relationships between important ideas within the Movement Science III module, using a concept map. See the back of the page for an example of the assignment.

TasksYour assignment is to answer the question, “What are the relationships between concepts within the Movement Science III module and a patient with a movement disorder?” In order to do this, you will need to complete the following tasks:

Identify a patient / client with a movement disorder (can be a patient you've treated, or somone you know)

Create a short patient presentation (about half a page) highlighting the movement disorder and it's impact on the person's function

Set a learning objective you would like to use this assignment to achieve Develop a concept map using concepts from the Movement Science module to explore / explain the

patient presentation, movement problems, and the physiotherapy management Use additional media (e.g. articles, web pages, images, videos) to highlight the relationships

between at least 5 concepts

Patient presentation55 year old male presenting with left-sided hemiplegia following a right CVA 2 years ago. The stroke left him with increased tone resulting in an upper limb flexor pattern, limited ROM throughout the upper and lower limbs and an inability to maintain a standing position for more than a few minutes. The patient has difficulty performing ADLs, including dressing, transferring and playing social soccer with his friends. He has been unable to work since the CVA, as his job required him to stand for 4-6 hours a day, sorting apples on a conveyer belt. At the initial assessment, you also notice that he has difficulty balancing in standing.

Management of the patient includes passive stretching to reduce tone and improve ROM, standing and walking in the parallel bars to improve exercise tolerance, and activities in standing to facilitate his balance. Long-term goals are to aim for return to employment on a part-time basis.

Objective: To explore the relationship between condition, patient and physiotherapy management.
