Rafael Cordero Molina was born October 24, 1790, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He was a self-taught free black man who devoted his life to educating slave and poor children who, therefore, could not attend school. He taught his students to read and write, as well as arithmetic, geography, history, and Catholic doctrine, a religion to which he was very devoted. The people called him maestro (teacher), a title he rejected because he considered Jesus the only one worthy of it. His fame as a good teacher was such that white families of the city - some of them well-off families - began to send their children to be educated by him. This is considered the genesis of the abolition of slavery in Puerto Rico as some of these white students, who studied in his school alongside poor and slave children were, as adults, abolitionist civic and political leaders who fought until slavery was eradicated on the Island. To support his little school he repaired shoes as he never wanted to charge for his classes. After years of exercising his teaching in a self-sacrificing and altruistic manner, a private organization rewarded his community service with a donation. Seeing himself obliged to accept it, he distributed half the money among the neediest of his students and the other half to the city’s beggars, invited by him to attend the event. On December 9, 2013, Pope Francis declared that this humble and just man had lived a life of Christian virtue in a heroic manner, which opened the path to his hoped for beatification.

"Some of you said: this system can no longer be endured. We must change it; we must put human dignity again at the center and on that pillar build the alternative social structures we need. It must
be done with courage, but also with intelligence, with tenacity but without fanaticism, with passion but without violence. And among us all, addressing the conflicts without being trapped in them, always seeking to resolve the tensions to reach a higher plane of unity, peace and justice."
-- Pope Francis, 10/28/14
