Worship Notes:Participants: Jerry Taylor, our minister of worship and music, presents the second sermon in oursermon series on music Brendon Prutzman, our associate pastor for youth and children’s ministries, hosts today’sworship. During the Children’s Lesson, the children from the Vacation Bible School will present the songs they learnedthis past week . Dan and Judy Schoun, whose daughter is being married here tomorrow, read today’s scripture andpresent the Prayers of the People. Donald Huff conducts the Praise Orchestra (without strings today). JerryTaylor is the organist.

Amber Henderson is being baptized today by Pastor Elliot Smith. Amber will be in the 8th grade at Spring ValleyAcademy.

Bruce Wilson, today’s Praise Orchestra guest, is an associate professor of music at Washington Adventist Universitywhere he is the director of the Washington Concert Winds and instrumental music. He has taught in AdventistEducation for 37 years and is responsible for commissioning 13 new sacred works for band from well-known Americancomposers. Bruce was voted into in 1992 and he received the ZaparaExcellence in Teaching Award in 1997.

Today’s musical selections are all compositions commissioned by Donald Huff or Bruce Wilson for Adventist Schools. As we gather for worship, we hear a fanfare prelude based on Hymn 223. Thispiece was commissioned from Ohio composer James Swearingen by Donald Huff for the Spring Valley Academy Band.It premiered in this church on May 16, 1998, with Sarah Bath as the organist and the composer conducting. JamesCurnow’s was commissioned by Donald Huff for the Loma Linda Academy Symphonic Band.premiere performance was November 3, 2007 at the Loma Linda University SDA Church with the composer directing.Based on the great hymn of praise and adoration by St. Frances of Assisi, Genesisportrays the creation story from the beginning of time to the first Sabbath.

(Hymn 565) was written in 1864 about God’s gifts to us. The tune, is named after William Dixwho wrote the Christmas hymn .

is a Salvation Army hymn written by Lloyd Scott. Bruce Wilson commissioned this arrangement for the2008 Columbia Union College Festival Honors Band by Stephen Bulla. The premiere performance was given on Friday,February 8, 2008 with Stephen Bulla conducting and Bruce Wilson playing the euphonium solo. For this reason,Donald Huff asked Bruce Wilson if he would consider coming to Ohio today to play it again. This composition will bepublished in 2011 by Landmark Publishing in London.

by James Curnow (who also composed the prelude piece ) is a set of threevariations based upon the old American psalm tune “Pleading Savior.” The hymn first appeared in Joshua Leavitt’scollection published in New York in 1831. The text usually associated with this tune is “Hail, ThouOnce Despised Jesus” by John Bakewell. This piece was commissioned by Bruce Wilson for the 1987 ShenandoahValley Academy Composer’s Festival, New Market, Virginia. James Curnow directed the premier performance. Mr.Curnow is from Nicholasville, Kentucky, where he is president, composer, and educational consultant for Curnow MusicPress, publishers of significant music for concert band and brass band.

(Hymn 32) was written by Fred Pratt Green, who lives in Norwich Englandand is one of only two hymns in our hymnal about music. Fred Pratt Green is one of the foremost hymn writers of ourtime. He has 15 texts in our current hymnal. The tune, was composed by Charles Villiers Stanford(1852-1924) who was one of England’s great church musicians. This tune is “through-composed” meaning that themelody has no repeated phrases, but keeps on going with a first ending and a final ending.

is a setting of Hymn No. 4 by Stephen Bulla. The basisof the work is the 19th-century hymn tune , which, roughly translated from the Latin, means “to praiselife.” This piece was commissioned by Donald Huff for the Spring Valley Academy Band. The premiere performancewas in the Kettering SDA Church on September 28, 2002, with Jerry Taylor as the organist and the composer directing.Stephen Bulla, after graduating from Boston’s Berklee College of Music, has served over thirty years as staff arrangerand composer for the United States Marine Band. He is responsible for the production of music that encompassescountless styles and instrumental combinations, most of which are performed for Presidential functions and visitingdignitaries in Washington DC. His compositions are performed both in the concert hall and on broadcast media.
