Worship Notes:Participants: Dr. Karl Haffner, our senior pastor, continues the fall sermon series on evangelism, “GoFish”. Dan Stevens, our pastor for administration, hosts today's worship. Victor Brown, Kettering CollegeDean for Enrollment, tells the children’s story. Jerry Taylor, minister of worship and music, is the organistfor today’s service. Donald Huff, conducts the Praise Orchestra.

About the Music: As we gather for worship, we hear composed byEric Ewazen who writes “On September 11, 2001, I was teaching my music theory class at The Julliard School, when we were notified of the catastrophe that was occurring several miles south of us in Manhattan.Gathering around a radio in the school’s library, we heard the events unfold in shock and disbelief. Afterwards, walking up Broadway on the sun-filled day, the street was full of silent people, all quickly heading to theirhomes. During the next several days, our great city became a landscape of empty streets and impromptu, heartbreaking memorials mourning our lost citizens, friends and family. But then on Friday, a few days later, the city seemed to have been transformed. On this evening, walking up Broadway, I saw multitudes of peopleholding candles, singing songs, and gathering in front of those memorials, paying tribute to the lost, becominga community of citizens of this city, of this country and of this world, leaning on each other for strength andsupport. portrays those painful days following September 11th, days ofsupreme sadness. It is intended to be a memorial for those lost souls, gone from this life, but who are forevertreasured in our memories.” was commissioned by and is dedicated to theUS Air Force Heritage of America Band, Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, Major Larry H. Lang, Director.

is a hymn written by Edwart Mote, who was a Baptist minister, andsung to the tune, which is often associated with the Navy Hymn. According to Acts 27, Melita is theRoman island where Paul was shipwrecked while traveling as a prisoner to Rome.

is a hymn written by Randall Wallace and set to the music of Nick Glennie-Smith forthe 2002 film, starring Mel Gibson, and was recorded by the United States Military AcademyGlee Club and the Metro Voices. The hymn also served as the recessional in the 2004 funeral of PresidentRonald Reagan. That rendition was sung by the Armed Forces Chorus with the United States Marine ChamberOrchestra. Josh Wheeker, tenor soloist, is a senior vocal major at the Cincinnati College Conservatory ofMusic.

(Hymn 530) Horatio Spafford was a highly successful lawyer from Chicago whohad invested much of his savings in real estate during the mid-1800s. Unfortunately, the Chicago fire of 1871wiped out his holdings, adding further to the despair that he was experiencing over the recent death of hisonly son. In 1873 Spafford, his wife and four daughters decided to travel to England for a much-neededvacation. Due to business, he sent his family ahead with the promise that he would join them shortlythereafter. On November 22 their ship, the , collided with an English sailing vessel off the coastof Newfoundland and sank within a matter of minutes. Horatio’s wife, Anna, was one of just a few survivors.Their daughters Maggie, Tenetta, Annie, and Bessie were all lost at sea. Anna sent Horatio a cable telegramthat simply said, “Saved alone.” When Horatio arrived to be with his grieving wife, he sailed near the locationwhere his daughters had tragically perished. There, in all his sorrow, he managed to pen the poem that overthe years has brought tremendous  comfort to countless numbers of people in times of grief. This hymn byHoratio Gates Spafford, along with the music of Philip Bliss, served as a significant inspiration for thecomposition

based on the well-known hymn, , is respectfully dedicated to theheroes of United Flight 93 who tragically lost their lives in a Pennsylvania field on September 11, 2001.Reflective, intense, somber and inspiring are but a few of the words that best describe the emotional make-upof this stunning composition. Commissioned by the Somerset County (Pennsylvania) Community Band, thiswork was premiered on the occasion of the one-year anniversary, with the composer conducting.

(Matthew 28:19) “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in thename of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

“It is not merely the duty of the minister, but of every member of the church, to representChrist to the world. They are to catch the rays of light from Jesus, and reflect them uponsouls blinded by error and infatuated with false doctrines.” (Ellen White, ,[1995], p. 153).

d. Volunteering to serve the poor so that people see an evangelistic sermon in you.

e. Knowing your own testimony so you can share it every chance you get.

III. Assessing your Style

A. The _________________________________________ Style

(Acts 17:16-17) While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was greatly distressed to see that the city was full of idols. So he reasoned in the synagogue with both Jews and God-fearing Greeks, as well as in the marketplace day by day with those who happened to be there.

B. The _________________________________________ Style

(John 4:28-30) Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?” 30 They came out of the town and made their way toward him.

C. The _________________________________________ Style

(Acts 2:14) Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say.

D. The _________________________________________ Style

(Acts 9:36) In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (in Greek her name is Dorcas); she was always doing good and helping the poor.

E. The _________________________________________ Style (Mark 5:18-19) As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon- possessed begged to go with him. Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.”
