Worship Notes:Participants: Dr. Karl Haffner, our senior pastor, presents today’s sermon from I Peter 5:1-14 on servantleadership. Elliot Smith, our pastor for Young Adults, Taskforce and Outreach, hosts today’s service. DonaldHuff, director of the Praise Orchestra, reads today’s scripture lesson. Kristan Huff, optometrist, presents thePrayers of the People. Victor Brown, dean for enrollment at KCMA, tells the children’s story. Steve Halldirects the Kettering Brass. Jerry Taylor, our minister of worship and music, is the organist for today’sservice.

As we gather for worship, the Kettering Brass plays Melchior Franck’s . Melchior Franck, 1579-1639(not to be confused with the French organist César Franck) was a German composer of the late Renaissanceand early Baroque eras. He was a hugely prolific composer of Protestant church music. Henry Purcell was anEnglish composer and organist at St. Pauls’ in London. Old 100th is the tune for our Doxology.

is from Felix Mendelssohn’s oratorio,

(Hymn 363) is sung to the Welsh tune The text to thishymn is a paraphrase of Isaiah 58:6, 7.

is a setting of Hymn 334 by Steve Hall’s student, Tim Rumsey. The hymn thiscomposition is based upon was written by Robert Robinson, who was an English Methodist preacher. Thetune, is named for Asahel Nettleton who was an itinerant evangelist in Connecticut, and manybelieve the early American composer, John Wyeth, is the composer of this tune.

is a setting of Hymn 216 and arranged for brass ensemble by NormanJohnson, a music editor from Virginia. The hymn and tune were written by James Milton Black, who was a“Singing School” teacher.

is a contemporary hymn composed by Daniel Schutte in 1981. Its words are based onIsaiah 6:8 and 1 Samuel 3.

is one of the great masterpieces of organ literature by the Frenchorganist/composer Eugène Gigout. This piece is most effective and most commonly played with organ and abrass ensemble. Eugène Gigout (March 23 1844 – December 9, 1925) was organist at Saint Augustine Churchin Paris for 62 years.

(1 Peter 5:1-4) “To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder, awitness of Christ's sufferings and one who also will share in the gloryto be revealed: Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care,serving as overseers-not because you must, but because you are will-ing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager toserve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examplesto the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receivethe crown of glory that will never fade away.”
