PROJECT BACKGROUND

Statistical quality improvement methods such as Taguchi and DOE techniques form an essential part of the search for improved product performance.

The Taguchi method has been widely used in engineering analysis and is a powerful tools to design a quality system.

Design of experiments (DOE) or experimental design is the design of any information-gathering exercises where variation is present, whether under the full control of the experimenter or not.

OBJECTIVES

To compare effectiveness Taguchi method and Shainin DOE experimental design processes in surface roughness.

To determine applicability Taguchi method in optimizing accuracy of surface roughness.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

The adoption of the experimental design techniques outlined in this paper and their application to a real engineering problem will enable a company to apply the techniques and to attain improvements in terms of cost and quality.

LITERATURE REVIEW

Logothetis, N., (1990). A Perspective on Shainin’s Approach to Experimental Design for Quality Improvement. Quality and Reliability Engineering International, 6 (3), pp. 195-202.

“Classical DOE and Taguchi approaches are still much more powerful, more statistically valid and more robust. Shainin methods could perhaps have some applicability in medium-to-high volume processes for which a high level of quality has already been achieved. They can also be used when dealing with binary response (for example, a machine work or not) and the reason behind the response may be due to a huge amount of variables”

LITERATURE REVIEW

Thomas A.J., Antony J., (2005). A Comparative Analysis of The Taguchi and Shainin DOE Techniques in an Aerospace Environment. International Journal of Productivity and Performance Management, Vol. 54, No. 8, pp. 658-678.

“The Taguchi approach provides for a powerful product/process enhancement capability where system robustness can be created through the identification of a wider range of influential variables that can affect system output. The Taguchi techniques provides its strength through being able to accurately identify main effects and interactions through partial factorial experimentation”

EXPECTED RESULT

This paper identifies an optimum parameter setting gained from applying these experimental design techniques to optimize Ra in surface roughness measurement by setting cut of length, type of probe and diameter of probe.

It also to compare effectiveness of Taguchi and Shainin DOE method as applied to surface roughness.
