While some of us were building sandcastles over the festive season, a team at Matla was erecting a new structure on top of B-silo to endsure a smooth continuation of mining activities.

A highly ambitious plan from the Structural Integrity and Maintenance System (SIMS) team was to excute the work over a 16-day window from 22 December to 7 January.

Demolition was planned to take eight days, removing at least 92 tonnes of steel, while erection of 156-ton new structure would take a further seven days. The work also involved dismantiling the three-incline conveyor structure going into the silo and putting back these conveyor structures and all the other ancillary tasks. The plan involved building the structure in four modules during November, galvanising the structure and pre-assembling the modules on the ground.

So far, so good.

What they didn’t factor in was heatwave conditions, thunderstorms, lightning and roaring winds, which precluded lifting any material above 22m.

But nature was no match for teamwork.

The Matla Plant Silo B Transfer House Structural and Chute replacement project all its objectives while focusing on safe execution in extremely tight timelines with no room to manoeuvre or for mistakes to be made. This project was completed within its budgeted timelines and costs.

WHY?

The old chutes of Matla Plant Silo Transfer House were in a state of hampering production and delivery of coal to Eskom Matla Power Station

THE PLANT SILO B STRUCTURAL REPLACEMENT PROJECT – MATLA COAL MINE

The project had to bring in LTM-1500 crane with a capacity of 550 tonnes and a 150m reach (the third-largest in SA) to demolish the old structure and erect the new structure.
