Stanton Library-

The year at a glance

The primary focus for many staff at Stanton

Library over the year was the planning and

preparation of events and activities for the

National Year of Reading, 2012. Signage,

promotional material and special events

during this time reflected the nationwide

focus on the profile of libraries and reading.

The Writers @ Stanton program continued

to be a popular and highly regarded

program, with the library hosting 59 events

over the course of the year.

Demand for children’s activities, especially

among the 0-5 age group continued to be

high, with bookings for the Baby Rhymetime

program being consistently filled.

Participation in the Bill Coppell Young

Writers’ Award was also high, with entries

being submitted from 17 schools.

The Heritage Centre continued to showcase

an interesting range of exhibitions and

talks, as well as several very popular

walking tours exploring the history and

features of the North Sydney area.

Computer and internet facilities in the

library are always in high demand, and

regular internet training classes were well

attended. Additional workshops on social

media, eBooks and the Ancestry online

resource also proved popular.

The volunteer Justice of the Peace service

has proved to be one of the most requested

new additions to daily activities in the

library, meeting the apparent high demand

for this kind of service in the area.

Research

Profile of a reference user

Anne, a High School student, needed to

research a female member of the family of

the second Prime Minister of Australia.

Anne began with the Australian Dictionary

of Biography where she found she had a

choice of Alfred Deakin’s two wives. She

then went on to make use of a wide variety

of Stanton resources [biographies, costume

and social history (19th

and early 20th

Century books] as well as a range of on line

databases, in compiling her portrait of one

of Australia’s First Ladies.

Legal Information Access Centre (LIAC)

In October Stanton launched its

participation in LIAC which was established

in 1990 by an Agreement between the Law

& Justice Foundation of NSW and the State

Library of New South Wales to provide

access to information about the law for the

NSW community.

Audio-visual (David Wallace) Collection

The presentation and accessibility of the

audio-visual collection improved markedly

with new, purpose-built shelving designed

by Carola Salazar of Five Spaces Design.

Community

Information

The Community Information database Lincs

is a valuable link between the community

and activities / contacts in their local area.

The Library also has a community display

area which informs people of local

activities, community organizations and

groups, leisure facilities, walks and cultural

events.

Volunteers

Outreach

In November 2011 Stanton commenced its

rostered Justice of the Peace service.

Dedicated JPs were made available in 2-hour

slots on weekdays initially and later on

Saturday afternoons as well.

Stanton depends on these and other

volunteers, to deliver its current range of

services; they work in the Home Library

Service and Local Studies, in particular the

Museums. On 6 December Mayor Genia

McCaffery hosted an evening to thank all

North Sydney Volunteers, and on 8

December she welcomed the Library

Volunteers to their special lunchtime ‘thank

you’.

Home Library Service

The Home Library Service (HLS) continued

to select and deliver resources to the

housebound residents of North Sydney

and the James Milson, Bougainvillea and

Georgian House and Lansdowne Gardens

retirement villages. This service also

delivers items for active borrowers who

have difficulty transporting library

material. HLS volunteers visit the patrons

who welcome a little additional company.

Community Centres

Stanton provided Internet links and

computer support to community centres

at Neutral Bay, Primrose Park, McMahons

Point and the Cammeray Croquet Club.

Professional and resource support is

provided for the lending service at Kirribilli

Neighbourhood Centre.

North Sydney Olympic

Pool

Seventy five years as a local landmark and a

national treasure, North Sydney Olympic

Pool was one of the most tehnically ad-

vanced and stylish municipal pools when it

opened in 1936. In October 2011, Don Bank

‘Writer in Residence’, P.M. Newton, gave a

talk about the local community’s intense

relationship with the Pool.

In December, Council’s Historian Dr Ian

Hoskins curated the replacement of the

large interpretative panels in the Pool’s 'Hall

of Fame'. The display now carries the title of

the recent North Sydney Heritage Centre

exhibition Liquid Luxury: celebrating 75

years of the North Sydney Olympic Pool. The

panels are of durable acrylic and marine ply

which will withstand the corrosive affects of

salt air and chlorine fumes. Spot lighting was

installed in January.

North Shore Historical

Society

The Library continued its strategic relation-

ship with the Society, hosting its on-line da-

tabase of journals and monthly meetings in

the Conference Room, as well as caring for

its Archives in the Heritage Centre. During

the Year the Society’s invited speaker talks

included:

Vic Grant: The Life of Thomas Sutcliffe

Mort: Australia’s Greatest Businessman.

Michael Lech: The rise of Sydney’s depart-

ment stores and the families that owned

them.

John Flint: Governor Lachlan Macquarie: his

wife and friends Parts 1 and 2

Paul Storm: Australian Decorative arts

Dr Ian Hoskins: Our birthright and inheri-

tance: whaling off NSW from the 1820s to

Don Bank Museum is a rare example of an

early timber slab house nestled in a

Victorian garden. Don Bank is open to the

public twice a week and through its displays

visitors can learn about North Sydney’s

social history. In 2012 a permanent

exhibition was installed.

Don Bank celebrated its 30th

anniversary as

a museum in 2011. The historic home was

bought by North Sydney Council in 1979

after community advocacy and on the

recommendation of the newly formed

Heritage Council. The house museum

opened in 1981.

St Thomas’ Rest Park and Sexton’s Cottage

Museum provides visitors with a snapshot

of life and death in Australia from the early

Victorian period. The Rest Park which is the

site of the former St. Thomas’ Cemetery,

the oldest European burial ground on the

North Shore dating back to 1845, is open in

daylight hours. The Museum is open once a

week.

May Gibbs’ Nutcote is the former house

and garden of May Gibbs, one of Australia’s

foremost children’s authors and illustrators,

and creator of the characters Snugglepot

and Cuddlepie. Owned and maintained by

Council but operated by a Trust, it is open

to the public Wednesdays to Sundays.

STATISTICS

Loans & in library use

Total library loans (643,401) fell by 5.2%

over the previous year and were

comparable with loan levels in 2003/4.

These lower levels arise from the opening

of large new libraries in the Shorelink

Network at Lane Cove and Willoughby, with

their attractions of two hours free parking

and supermarket shopping.

Against this trend, loans in the young adult

(17,000) and junior collections (158,000),

held steady. Adult Reference database

usage soared with a 42% increase. In library

usage (2,898) increased by 12%.

Progress on Strategic

Plan

Reader services

While information requests at the desk and

internal loans (see also door count below)

all dropped, mirroring the impact on loans,

reservations and interlibrary loans persisted

at previous levels, with the inter-Shorelink

courier service remaining very productive:

41,749 items were conveyed, assisting to

take thousands of cars off the road.

Conference Room usage remained at the

same high level as last year with over 400

bookings.

The library was open 1 day less than last

year, and was again able to open on a

public holiday during Easter thanks to a

willing staff.

Stanton’s public continued strong use of

the self-checker with 103,400 or 16% of

items issued by the borrowers themselves.

Children’s services

The library is again well placed to respond

to the increase in numbers of children in

the LGA with, as discussed, loans up and

activities holding up against previous years.

Attendance at storytelling (4,900) increased

over last year while there a small drop in

attendance at Holiday activities (723

attending).

Page 22 Stanton Library Annual Report

Historic services

The number of Historical Services research

requests (429) increased by 49.5% over last

year.

An exhibition on the architecture of

residential flat buildings opened in the

Heritage Centre and the display at the

Olympic Pool was re-created for the 75th

Anniversary.

Don Bank contributed two fine exhibitions,

with over 300 attending throughout the

year.

Walking tours increased their numbers by

47% and 348 attended history talks.

Home Library Service

Home Library Service loans decreased by

7.9%, reversing the results for last year. The

number of members, volunteers and

nursing homes and retirement villages

remained constant.

Door count

As with the loan count, and for the same

reasons, the door count (385,550) again

decreased, this year by 3.7%. Use of the

Heritage Centre and Museums remained

steady with over 17,000 attending.

Membership

20,887 North Sydney residents are active

members of the Library, following a cull

using State Library Guidelines. This

comprises 33.6% of the resident

population. A further 17,539 members are

largely drawn from the North Sydney

workforce or have reciprocal membership

with other Shorelink Council areas.

Expenditure

Resource expenditure for the years was

101.6%.

Income

Recurrent Income, while 7.5% less than the

previous year, principally due to less late

fees, was 10.75% over the estimate.

Library Resources

The library added 18,000 items, resulting in

a turnover of stock of 10% compared with a

target of 8%.

Local History Collections & Resources

The Heritage Centre’s Vertical File

collections (over 2,000 uses) remained well

used and 87 new files were added to the

collection.

Usage of the Heritage Databases increased

markedly as already mentioned, while over

300 items were added, and over 1,700 local

newspaper items were indexed.

Value of collections

The value of the collection remained

consistent.
