COMMUNION SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY 18th SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST OCTOBER 4, 2020 10:00 AM PRELUDE “Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise” arr. Cindy Berry WORDS OF WELCOME & WORSHIP Noah Gulley CALL TO WORSHIP One: The goodness of the Lord passes before us; Many: The name of the Holy One is proclaimed for all to hear. One: God is gracious and merciful to whomever God chooses; All: Show us Your glory, O Lord, we pray! HYMN OF PRAISE “Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise” Immortal, invisible, God only wise, in light inaccessible hid from our eyes, most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days, almighty, victorious, Thy great name we praise. PRAYER OF CONFESSION Merciful God, the words in Isaiah about not knowing You, and not hearing about You, resonate within us as we link them with the words of Paul— “woe to me if I do not proclaim the gospel!" Woe to us all if we persist in proclaiming the gospel in words and ways which put people down rather than build them up. Forgive us, O God, for the times when our piety is visible on Sundays, but hard to detect the rest of the week. Strengthen us with the Holy Spirit to do all for the sake of the gospel, so that we and all those to whom it is proclaimed may share in its blessings. Now hear us as we lift up our personal prayers of confession. SCRIPTURE LESSON Exodus 33:12-18 Robin Daniels Moses said to the LORD, “You have been telling me, ‘Lead these people,’ but You have not let me know whom You will send with me. You have said, ‘I know you by name and you have found favor with Me.’ If You are pleased with me, teach me Your ways so I may know You and continue to find favor with You. Remember that this nation is Your people.” The LORD replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” Then Moses said to Him, “If Your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here. How will anyone know that You are pleased with me and with Your people unless You go with us? What else will distinguish me and Your people from all the other people on the face of the earth?” And the LORD said to Moses, “I will do the very thing you have asked, because I am pleased with you and I know you by name.” Then Moses said, “Now show me Your glory.” SPECIAL MUSIC “The Lord’s Prayer” By Malotte Daphne Trent, Soprano SERMON R.S.V.P. Louis Imsande #4: Responding In Deed to God’s World 1 Corinthians 9:16-23 For when I preach the gospel, I cannot boast, since I am compelled to preach. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! If I preach voluntarily, I have a reward; if not voluntarily, I am simply discharging the trust committed to me. What then is my reward? Just this: that in preaching the gospel I may offer it free of charge, and so not make full use of my rights as a preacher of the gospel. Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law), so as to win those not having the law. To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. I do all this for the sake of the gospel that I may share in its blessings. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. HYMN OF COMMITMENT “Breathe on Me, Breath of God” Breathe on me, Breath of God; fill me with life anew, that I may love what Thou dost love, and do what Thou wouldst do.
