WE NEED GREETERS
TO SAY “HELLO” WHEN FOLKS ARRIVE AT MASS
It could mean so much. A handshake, a smile, a kind word, and and
perhaps occasionally a hug -- that's pretty much the
job description of a church greeter.
Greeters play a vital role in welcoming every person who comes in the doors of St. Patrick Church. As a
Greeter, you help our guests form their first impression of our parish even before the first song begins. One
half hour on a Saturday afternoon/Sunday morning is all it takes to be a part of this vital ministry. We need adults as well as kids 6th through 12th grade (students
can earn service hours by serving). Please call Shannon at the parish office to sign up!
JUST BE
YOUR WARM,
INVITING SELF.
EUCHARISTIC ADORATION will not be held on Wednesday, July 4.
It will resume at 9AM on Thursday, July 5th.
THE PARISH OFFICE WILL BE CLOSED on Tuesday and
Wednesday, July 3 & 4. The office will resume
regular business hours on Thursday, July 5.

in the Divine Mercy Chapel on July 4.
Our next “Souper Senior” Luncheon will be held on
Thursday, July 5th. BRING QUARTERS to play Bingo. We will play a quarter a card and the winner
will receive half of the money that was taken in for the game. You do not need to come for Bingo to stay for lunch. Lunch will be served at
11:30 AM. Lunch is $3.00 a person. Our presentor will be
Laura Faircloth who is the with the CR Police Department and
commander of the Honor Guard.

The 4th of July Holiday is often filled with parades, barbecues, fireworks, and impromptu softball games. Families, friends, and neighbors often get together to enjoy good food, talking, and lighting off fireworks. It all began on
July 2, 1776, when the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence from Great Britain. The birth of our country took place two days later, on July 4th, when the Declaration of Independence was adopted and
promulgated.
We have many freedoms here in America that people of other nations only dream about. On this upcoming 4th of July, let us remember what your nation gives you and salute all the soldiers who fought many wars on your behalf. Finally, ask yourself what you are doing to help future generations of America so the freedoms you cherish will also
be theirs.
A few pieces of information to keep you informed about the Summer News here in the parish. We have good news to report. We now own both houses on 1st Avenue – west of the rectory. Depending on the cash flow of the
parish that will dictate the time-frame when these two houses will be torn down. Secondly, it is our hope and dream to concrete the entire area with additional spaces for parking.
We have every intention of tearing down the “A” Avenue house on 5th Street this summer. You might be surprised to learn that we have to receive permission from the Historical Society of Cedar Rapids prior to getting the go
ahead with the demolition of the “A” Avenue house. We hope to use volunteer labor from the parish when it is time to demolish the house.
We started Sunday Eucharistic Adoration on August 13, 2017 in our Divine Mercy Chapel. We can always use
additional people to step-up and commit themselves to praying one hour of adoration on Sundays. We have been doing Eucharistic Adoration for the last six years here at St. Patrick Parish in our Divine Mercy Chapel.
As a parish, we are seriously committed to doing Eucharistic Adoration. Most people would agree that the blessings that God is pouring-out on our parish are due to our faithfulness to Eucharistic Adoration. Please contact
the Parish Office to sign-up for Eucharistic Adoration on Sundays.
We are beginning a new Fiscal Year here in the Parish starting on July 1, 2018. The standard rule of thumb is that expenses across the board increase by 2% each year. That being the case we will need $12,750.00 per
weekend in financial giving for 2018-2019. We did a nice job last year at St. Patrick Parish in terms of meeting our parish bills.
We continue to urge people to consider EFT (Electronic Fund Transfers). Each month a particular financial gift is electronically transferred from your bank to St. Patrick Parish. It is a convenient way to be faithful to God in
terms of your financial support. Secondly, it helps our parish to stay ahead of the bills with a steady and consistent stream of cash flowing into the parish. For more information on EFTs contact the Parish Office.
On a more serious note, as a priest, I am sometimes scandalized by the clothing of our Eucharistic Ministers of Holy
Communion at our Weekend Masses. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church: “The Mass is at the same time, and inseparably, the sacrificial memorial in which the sacrifice of the cross is perpetuated and the sacred
banquet of communion with the Lord’s body and blood is made present” (CCC #1382). The Catechism of the Catholic Church recognizes the need for outward signs of our inward understanding of what is
happening at Mass. “Bodily demeanor (gestures, clothing, attitudes) ought to convey the respect, solemnity, and joy of this moment when Christ becomes our guest” (CCC #1387). Jesus Christ Himself is not a symbol. He
becomes substantially present to us in the Eucharistic Host. Each time we receive Holy Communion, our hearts should be echoing the words of St. John the Apostle as he recognized the Risen Christ on the seashore and shouted,
“It is the Lord!”

FROM THE PASTOR CONTINUED:
The issue of inappropriate dress is connected to shorts and jeans. Shorts and jeans are not
appropriate clothing attire for Eucharistic Ministers. If you are wearing shorts and/or jeans
please do not make yourself available to distribute Holy Communion.
At any Mass on a given Weekend, we only need two Eucharistic Bread ministers and two Eucharistic
Cup ministers. Christmas and Easter may be the only exceptions to the rule of needing more than
two Bread and two Cup ministers. The world is not going to come to an end if we are short one or
two Eucharistic Ministers at any given Weekend Mass.
The people of St. Patrick Parish are most deserving of Eucharistic Ministers who dress
appropriately. All of us need to be respectful and reverent during the Holy Mass. It starts with the
priest, the altar servers, the ushers, the lectors and the Eucharistic Ministers. Appropriate dress on the
part of Liturgical Ministers will assist our parish family in fostering a deeper respect and
reverence at Holy Mass. May God continue to bless all of us who seek to worthily serve at the Altar of the Lord.
Finally, we have one staff change here in St.
Patrick Parish. We are saying good-bye to Kristin Soukup. Kristin has been here at St. Pat’s and
Xavier High School for the last three years. She will be completing her duties as Youth Minister and
Young Adult Minister at St. Pat’s in late July. Kristin Soukup has done a great job and we wish her well. Let Kristin know how much we
appreciated her and the many gifts that she brought to our parish.
As with most departures there are corresponding
new arrivals. We are pleased to let you know that Kristin Soukup will be replaced by Zach
Gignac. Zach is a Xavier High School and UNI graduate. Zach will be shadowing Kristin during the month of July. Unlike Kristin, Zach will not be
teaching at Xavier High School. Zach, however, is a good musician. He will be sharing his musical
talents with us over and above his duties as Youth Minister and Young Adult Minister. We welcome
Zach to our parish. Sincerely,
Fr. Ivan Nienhaus
