Dear sisters and brothers in
the Lord,
The Latin word infans, from
which we get the word infant,
literally means “one who does
not speak.” It’s not that in-
fants don’t make noise—after
all they coo and goo and of
course they cry and scream!
But an infant does not speak
with words or logic.
According to Genesis, God
speaks. In fact His Word
brings all things into existence
and all things are ordered by
his logic. God continued to
speak to Adam and Eve, Abra-
ham, Jacob, Moses and the
prophets. Throughout the his-
tory of Israel, God is not
known by an image, as were
the various gods of the nations,
but by His Words of command-
ment and promise. The Au-
thor of Hebrews tells us that
“In many and various way,
God spoke to His people old by
the prophets, but now in these
last days He has spoken to us
by His Son.” (Hebrews 1:1-2a)
It is interesting that when God
speaks to us by His Son, at
first He says nothing! The
Word of God took on flesh and
blood in the natural way
(except without a human fa-
ther)—he was born as an in-
fant—as one who does not
speak. The very Word of God,
through whom and for whom
all things were made is re-
duced to coos and goos and
cries as he lies in a manger.
The Word of God did not ap-
pear on earth in His expanded
form. Instead, the Word ap-
peared in His abbreviate
form—without overwhelming
power and splendor—in acces-
sible human form.
For a time God’s Word was si-
lent. Yes the true wonder of
Christmas all comes down to a
baby, the speechless Word of
God, cradled in Mary’s arms.
And yet, that silent Word
speaks volumes of the Father’s
love for His creation. This si-
lent infant calls you and me to
Himself to adore Him in awe
and wonder. He calls you and
me to “be still and know that I
am God.” (Psalm 46:10)
Having been made flesh, born,
died, resurrected and ascended
into heaven, He comes to us
again. He comes to us not in
power or might, but again in
an abbreviated and accessible
form, what we call the Holy
Eucharist-- the glory and
splendor of God veiled by the
common food of bread and
wine. There are no adequate
words to describe such a mys-
tery. All we can do is simply
lay aside all earthly cares and
in silence worship the King of
All.
As the world around us makes
the noise of holiday prepara-
tions, may we Christians con-
sider the true meaning of
Christmas with the words of
this ancient hymn, from the
Liturgy of St. James, dating
back to at least the 2nd Cen-
tury:

Pastor’s Paragraphs
Let all mortal flesh keep si-
lence,
And with fear and trembling
stand;
Ponder nothing earthly
minded,
For with blessing in His hand
Christ our God to earth de-
scended
Our full homage to demand.
King of kings yet born of Mary,
As of old on earth He stood,
Lord of lords in human ves-
ture,
In the Body and the Blood
He will give to all the faithful
His own self for heavenly food.
May you know the joy and
peace of Christ as you ponder
the mystery of His nativity!
In obedience to the Gospel,
Pastor A.J. Domines

Article III The Son of God
It is also taught among us that God the Son became man, born of the Virgin Mary, and that the two na-tures, divine and human, are so in-separably united in one person that there is one Christ, true God and true man, who was truly born, suffered, was crucified, died and was buried in order to be a sacrifice not only for original sin, but also for all other sins and to propitiate God’s wrath. The same Christ also descended into hell, truly rose from the dead on the third day, ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of God, that he may eternally rule and have dominion over all creatures, that through the Holy Spirit, he may sanctify, purify, strengthen and comfort all who believe in Him, that He may bestow on them life and every grace and blessing, and that He may protect and defend them against the devil and against sin. The same Lord Christ will return openly to judge the living and the dead, as stated in the Apostles’ Creed.
Scripture Readings
Philippians 2:5-11
Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not
regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a
slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and be-
came obedient to the point of death—even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him
and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should
bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ
is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Socia l Ministr y
The Social Ministry committee is again
sponsoring an Angel Tree at the church
this holiday season. We will be receiving
the names of ~60 children from the Luther-
Care child-care program in Columbia. The
Luthercare program offers families trust-
worthy and affordable child-care, provided
by qualified staff. Most of the families
with children in the Columbia center have
their child-care subsidized due to their low
income. The children’s names we receive
are truly in need, especially during the
holiday season
Each child will be assigned a num-
ber. This number is then written on an
angel, which will include a brief descrip-
tion of the child (i.e. boy, age 6) along with
their requests for Christmas and their
clothing size. (Please note that it is not
necessary to purchase everything on the
list). We ask that the families of Christ
Lutheran Church consider choosing an an-
gel and join us in fulfilling the wishes of
those less fortunate than ourselves this
Christmas. The angels will be placed on
the tree in the parlor by November 22nd.
Please remember to fill-out the sign-up
sheet when you choose your angel.
Wrapped gifts should be tagged with
the appropriate angel number and
brought to the church by Sunday, De-
cember 13th. Social ministry will then
deliver the gifts to the LutherCare center.
If you have any questions about the Angel
Tree project, please contact Jodi Yorty at
361-9531 or [email protected].

Greg is a Stephen Min-
ister, Stephen Minister
Leader, and the Stephen Min-
ister referral coordinator. He
started in this program at the
inception here at
Christ Lutheran by
being one of three
people attending the
Stephen Leader
training in 2011 by
traveling to Orlando,
FL. He accompanied
Pastor Domines and
Bonnie Balmer.
When asked
what made him think about
becoming part of the Stephen
Ministries program he an-
swered. "By the amount of care
that I have received here over
the years going back to when
my dad joined the church,
when Cindy and I joined the
church, when Christie was
born, and then again to when
my Dad, my son Todd, and
Cindy passed away.” It is the
caring that I have received
through these times. I also
believe with the way my per-
sonal inventory fell it was a
call reaching out to become a
Stephen Minister.
I asked Greg what the big-
gest challenge has been. He
responded “the big-
gest challenge is un-
derstanding that
there are a number of
folks in the congrega-
tion and community
who could benefit
from the use of a
Stephen Minister,
but being able to con-
vey the usefulness of
a Stephen Minister to
them. A Stephen Minister can
become a very close friend that
allows you to get things said
out loud that enables someone
to carry that with them.” Greg
hopes that there is a better un-
derstanding of the purpose and
need for how beneficial the pro-
gram can be to an individual
going through rough times.
When asked the most
rewarding part of being a
Stephen Minister Greg’s re-
sponse was immediate.

To the Members of Christ Lu-
theran,
On Sunday, August 23, we
were visiting your church with
our son, daughter-in-law, and
granddaughter, Scott, Missy,
and Morgan Little. Scott was
reading the prayer when he
fainted. We were all in shock.
We want to say thanks for the
way everyone came up to help
all of us. First of all, Scott.
But then to help comfort
Missy, Morgan, and us. We
appreciate your caring church.
