TETRA
– Digital Trunked Radio
T ETRA (Terrestrial Trunked Radio)
is an ESI Standard for digital trunked
radio. Its special performance charac-
teristics make it ideal for organizations
concerned with security, such as the
police, fire service or other aid services.
Compared with mobile radio standards
such as GSM and UMTS, TETRA offers
better transmission quality and addi-
tional features with respect to security. As well as voice transmissions, several
methods of data transmission are also
possible. TETRA was introduced in
Germany in 2005. Most other European
countries have been using TETRA net-
works for much longer.
