Vice Commodore of Summerset Report

The curtain is about to rise on this year's 55th Summerset Re-gatta! The dedicated commit-tee has tirelessly worked to make it as normal as possible under way less than favorable

conditions!

We have awesome T-Shirt Artwork provided by Steve Colgate! We have great boat bags from Trader Joe's! We have tremendous Door

Prizes for every Skipper, thanks to Steve Ro-maine! We have great Raffle Items! We have fantastic sailing conditions forecast! We have three great marinas for our out of town boats to hang out at! The Governor has opened up the bars! Close to 30 boats have already registered with four days to go! Our Sailors will make it a Great Weekend on the water! We will make a Profit for Young Sailors! Enjoy and Sail Fast!

Allen Fiske V C of Summerset

Summerset is HERE! This is going to be AWESOME! Thanks to Allen Fiske and his Summerset Committee for all their work throughout the year to make this flagship CMCS event. More from Allen in his article.

We did had a great Septem-ber CMCS Membership meet-

ing via ZOOM – we enjoyed a nice social gather-ing at 6:30pm and called the meeting to order at 7pm. If you weren’t able to join, we sure missed you and we would really love to have you join in October. Due to privacy issues we need to dis-tribute the zoom link via email – be on the look-out for a blast email with that info (likely the Thursday or Friday BEFORE the meeting as well as another reminder on Monday or the day of the actual meeting).

Thanks to all of YOU as CMCS members for your patience as we work through how/when to get back together safely. We’re in this together, stay strong, stay safe!

It’s that time of year again for the CDC (Club Development Com-mittee) to do its work in finding our next year’s Officers and Com-mittee Chairs. I have listed below the positions we need to fill. I know in this time of COVID 19 it’s been a little strange and it’s going to be a lot harder to talk to folks about contributing with no face-to-face meetings, but we need to get going on next year.

Please let me remind everyone that this is YOUR Club and without everyone’s contributions we won’t be as strong or as fun as in the past. That being said, let me, Jim Slager, Jason Pim, or Art Schuller know if you are interested in one of these positions. Thanks to all those who have contributed in the past and thank you to every-one who responds.

Rear Commodore of Cruising ReportRear Commodore of Cruising Report

Ahoy, sailors!

Gary and I went out to St James City on Saturday, 9/19/20, what a lovely cruise! The weather was a little cooler (still warm by northern stan-dards!), we even got to put our sails out!

September 11 – 13 found a few hearty souls at South

Seas, for the Kayusa Cup race which was to take place on Sunday, September 13. Unfortu-nately, TS Sally came along to mess with the weekend. See the report elsewhere in this Chowder Chatter.

October brings us to Summerset for the first weekend. There will be no cruise associated with this event. Read elsewhere in this CC for details.

At the end of October we’ll be back at South Seas for the Halloween Cruise, October 30 – November 1. Be sure to get your reservation in on the CMCS website. I need a cruise leader for this event. Please contact me with your interest at 239-321-9480. The docks will have to be used for any socializing since their captain’s room is not available.

November 13 – 15 is our Rum and Reading cruise to Saint James City for Bob Macomber’s new book. Check the CMCS website for details and to register for this cruise. Kim Brown and Judy Anderson are cruise leaders.

Carolyn Wilson and Dan Green will once again lead our Thanksgiving Cruise to Pelican Bay, November 25 – 29. Cabbage Key will be having turkey with all the trimmings again this year. Watch the website for further updates and cost for the meal.

Details are being worked out for our New Year’s

Cruise. If you are interested in leading this

Rear Commodore‑

Cruising

cruise and would like to have some input for where we will go, please contact me at 239-321-9480. Dates are 12/29/2020 – 01/02/2021.

What can I say…this has been a strange year for our 50

th Anniversary. We are coming into the

home stretch to close out 2020. I, for one, will be glad to see it go! I hope you are all staying well and that 2021 will be better. Please be sure to continue washing your hands, use hand sani-tizer if soap and water are not available, cover any coughs and sneezes, practice social dis-tancing, and wear a mask. A face covering pro-tects your friends in case you are asymptomatic and can prevent someone else from getting sick. Plan to use one when you attend group activities with CMCS. Additionally, if you are feeling sick, stay on your boat. You, of course, will need to participate as you see fit, consider-ing your own health and risk factors.

Be safe out there!

Kayusa Cup Cruise Report

And then along came Sally.....

SO the Kayusa Cup race was can-celled. There were however a cou-ple of hearty (or stupid) cruisers that ventured out to South Seas for a better than you might expect weekend. Ciboney, Trust Me and Margarita showed up Friday and commandeered M Dock. This was easy as the Marina was pretty empty they were cancelling left and right. We were disappointed to learn that rum punch Friday has been scuttled by the cursed bug. Friday afternoon was lovely for pool time. The Crooked Snook was sell-

ing drinks seems the virus only attacks the freebies. The skies threatened but generally did not. Closer to Happy hour the skies did the torrential thing and we ducked below for a couple hours. The rain stopped in time for dinner adventures. Ciboney tried for town but reported the roads still flooded and the shuttle, Escargot, nowhere to be found. South Seas trolley driver reported that Escargot dis-appeared when things started shutting down and has not resurfaced yet. Trust Me opted for Doc Fords and had a mediocre socially distanced meal. Harborside has not reopened yet. Saturday morning was actually very nice. The low clouds, breeze and low temperature made walks along the beach quite pleasant. Saturday afternoon was hit and miss with the rain. Happy hour was had. About 7:30p was when it got nasty. It stayed nasty all night but South Seas is nicely protected. By morning we were being blown off the dock instead of on it and we knew the end was near. De-spite the breeze and persistent rain we headed home about 10:30a. We saw exactly 4 other boats between South Seas and home. We met no one in the miserable mile. It wasn't tourist weather but after the heat of the last several weeks it was a nice change of pace. Submitted by Trust Me!!! Thanks Kim for filling us in on the details of this Cruise and to James Gallagher for being willing to take on a cruise. Weather played a significant role in the weekend's events. Just another challenge for this incredibly challenging year. I for one am ready to say goodbye to 2020!

Membership and Recruitment

Ahoy Mates! We had another virtual Mem-bership Meeting on Septem-ber 15

th.

I counted 21 participants. If anyone is not receiving the

monthly membership meeting memo via Email let me know …[email protected]. Allen Fiske has Summerset very well organized and it

looks to be a successful event even in these trying times. So far our social gatherings are on hold or can-celled because of the Covid-19 epidemic. The Christmas party is yet to be determined. We’re all so hoping for a vaccine but that does-n’t appear to be coming soon. We have our first new membership for 2021. Brock and Barbara Johnson are returning members. They live in Ft. Myers Beach. I’m getting feedback that many of you know them. Let’s all give them a warm welcome. Also, Art Schuller submitted our first 2021 membership renewal. Art has a Tartan sailboat named Radiant. Thanks Art for kicking off our renewal season. I’m sure we are all looking forward to in person meetings to enjoy our great socializa-tion. Thanks to you all for your loyalty to the club and your continued participation when pos-sible. Stay healthy,

Fair winds and following seas,

Thanksgiving Cruise

November 25 - November 29

Cruise Leaders: Carolyn Wilson & Dan Green

Meet us at Pelican Bay to celebrate Tur-key Day! We’ll spend a relaxing few days at this beautiful anchorage and head to Cabbage Key via dinghy on Thanksgiving Day for a fabulous turkey dinner with all the trimmings. No muss, no fuss just great food and great com-pany. Arrangements have been made for a tra-ditional Thanksgiving Dinner on Thurs-day for 2:00 PM at Cabbage Key. Dinner costs $??. Remember, there’s only one check, so you will want to bring cash. This is a very flexible cruise. Most boats arrive Wednesday afternoon. There are usu-ally a few members who opt to have Thanksgiving dinner at home and then head up to Pelican Bay sometime afterward. A few boats have even stayed over at Cabbage Key’s dock, or anchored at Useppa (just across the channel) without coming to Peli-can Bay. The choice is yours. There’s plenty to do at Pelican Bay with exploring in your dingy, access to Cayo Costa beach. Our tradition of happy hours on a boat, beach, and/or manatee hole will likely be curtailed this year due to COVID-19. If the stars align properly, we may even head up to Lover’s Lane and the private beach. Here’s a link to that handy Pelican Bay Anchorage Chart. IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS: Please, do not call Cabbage Key to make or change dinner reservations for the CMCS group. In the past, this has always confused our reservation. Please make your reservation thru our cruise leaders. ONLY our Cruise Leaders will be modifying the CMCS dinner reservation at Cabbage Key. We’ve tried to make it easy for you to make your reservation by using the handy RSVP form on the website. Simply type your information in the boxes, and then click on “Submit RSVP”.

CRUISE LEADERS WANTED ! We’re headed back to South Seas resort for a “Spooktacular” event with costumes, prizes, food and fun. Arrive on Friday and we’ll have Happy Hour by the wa-ter. Decorate your boat for a chance to win fabulous prizes and await resort trick or treaters coming along the dock on Saturday evening. Having trick or treaters at your boat is really the sweetest treat! We’ve negotiated a great rate of $2.50/ft. for a minimum of seven vessels. It’s never too early to reserve a slip. This is a great way to enjoy all that South Seas has to offer for a fantastic price. Please use the following link to Sign up for this cruise :https://www.cmcs-sail.org/event/halloween-cruise/.

Be sure to make your reservation on the CMCS website so we know to expect you.

We are not sure what this year will be like with COVID around. We will have to play this by ear...even the marina is not sure what they will be doing. Don’t forget spooky decorations for your boat and candy for the trick or treaters. There are usually prizes for best decorated vessels. If it’s good weather, there will likely be lots of trick or treaters from all over the world. Better treats that tricks! South Seas typically plans many Halloween activities over the weekend.
