From the Editor’s Desk
Greetings my fellow Comicmaniacs! It is I your host Tali
adina. Welcome to another episode-the Superbowl edition!
That’s right geek gals and guys, it’s that time of year again
where (American) football lovers throughout the world come
together in their own homes or other folks homes or outside
the sacred stadium where the game is played to cheer or jeer
one of the two teams (or both) who play for that coveted
trophy-you know the silver one with the football on it.
Besides the game there are many other reasons why geeks
throughout the universe gather in front of the TV. There’s the
halftime show (meh), the commercials (yay), and the movie
trailers (oh hell yeah) that we all look forward to. I’ll discuss a
few Superbowl things later in this episode but I’m also back
with new editions of the mainstays.
The Comicmaniac Five has my picks for the top news stories these past few weeks
in the geek universe. This episode the Character Spotlight is the Teenage Mutant
Ninja Turtles. The Comicmaniac Spotlight shines on the Gorgeous Geeks, while the
Classic Comic Review is Superman vs. Muhammed Ali. Geek Reads, and Puzzle Me
are back as well Web, Podcasts, CDs, & DVD picks.
So I hope you enjoy the big game and this episode.
Catch ya later!
Your Captain,
Tali Adina
The Comicmaniac Five
The Superbowl isn’t the only important news story going on, here’s this episode’s Comicmaniac Five:
5. Superbowl Sunday 2012
That’s right it’s the New England Patriots vs. the New York Giants
an excellent rematch! Madonna, Nicki Minaj, and LMAFO will be
performing during halftime so that’s definitely going to be
interesting. We’ve also got those expensive thirty second
commercials and awesome movie trailers to look forward to. Get
your popcorn, wings, beer, candy, pizza, and whatever else you’re
gonna eat ready.
4. Womanthology
Is set to be released towards the end of February for the
contributors and backers and March for everyone else to
purchase! Remember all proceeds go to Global Giving Foundation.

1.Watchmen prequel stories due this summer in 'Before Watchmen'
Twenty-five years have past since ‘Watchmen’ debuted in comic shops everywhere and became a classic
book. We’ve had a good film and now DC Comics will be bringing us thirty-five comics that explore the
lives of the characters before the graphic novel. Alan Moore won’t be participating of course because he
feels that the story he told was self-contained so other writers will be writing the stories. Debuting in
The Comicmaniac Five
the summer, each week an issue will be released and will feature a two-page back-up story called "The
Curse of the Crimson Corsair," written by original series editor Len Wein and with art by John Higgins.
The inter-connected prequel mini-series and an epilogue will build on the foundation of the original
Watchmen book Here’s the lineup:
Rorschach (4 issues): Writer: Brian Azzarello. Artist: Lee Bermejo.
Minutemen (6 issues): Writer/Artist: Darwyn Cooke.
Comedian (6 issues): Writer: Brian Azzarello. Artist: J.G. Jones.
Dr. Manhattan (4 issues): Writer: J. Michael Straczynski. Artist: Adam Hughes.
Nite Owl (4 issues): Writer: J. Michael Straczynski. Artists: Andy and Joe Kubert.
Ozymandias (6 issues): Writer: Len Wein. Artist: Jae Lee.
Silk Spectre (4 issues): Writer: Darwyn Cooke. Artist: Amanda Conner.
Watchmen: Epilogue (1 issue): Various writers and artists.

Three talented sisters who got their love of comics from

as Smallville, and the Vampire Diaries. They interview

and do a weekly news update called the Geekly News.

Character Spotlight
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, heroes in
a half shell, turtle power!”
That’s part of the opening song for the 80’s cartoon that I and
many other folks grew up watching. Nowdays, I’m trying to collect
the entire series (I’ve already got all four films). Not until a few
years ago on Free Comic Book Day when I entered my local comic
shop and picked up a free copy of the 25th edition of the first issue
of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic book that I realized
that the 80’s tv show wasn’t the beginning of the turtles. It was
only part of the story.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was created by Peter Laird and
Kevin Eastman in 1984 in Dover, New Hampshire. The concept arose from a humorous drawing sketched
out by Kevin Eastman during a casual evening of brainstorming with Peter. Using money from a tax
refund and a loan from Eastman's uncle, the young artists self-
published a single issue comic intended to parody four of the most
popular comics of the early 1980s:
Marvel Comics' Daredevil and
New Mutants, Dave Sim's
Cerebus, and Frank Miller's Ronin.
And that was the beginning of the
story which through the years has
consisted of toys, comics, TV
shows-cartoon and live action,
and five films-three live action,
one cgi, and one cartoon (Turtles
Forever).
Currently, there’s an awesome new comic book series that debuted a few
months ago. It’s published by IDW and it’s a new take on the turtles but
it’s still sticks to its classic roots while bringing a breath of fresh air.
There’s also a new cartoon series that will be debuting on Nickelodeon
this year. These shellbacks-along with Master Splinter and the rest of the
crew-are still striking hard and fading into the night. So whether you
grew up with “Go green machine!” or “It’s ninja time!” You gotta love
being a turtle!
Classic Comic Review
Superman VS. Muhammed Ali
The man of steel versus the greatest. This was an epic matchup and a epic book. I want to thank my co-
worker (who’s also a librarian) Mike Schau for putting this book in my hand and telling me, “You must
read this.”
Publisher: DC Comics 1978
Writers: Original Story Dennis O’Neil Adapted by Neal Adams
Pencils: Neal Adams
Inks: Figure Inks by Dick Giordano Background Inks by Terry Austin
The 72-page oversized book features Superman teaming up with the
heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali to defeat an alien
invasion of Earth. Superman vs. Muhammad Ali's wraparound cover
shows a host of late 1970s celebrities, including Frank Sinatra, Lucille
Ball, Tony Orlando, Johnny Carson, Ron Palillo, the cast of Welcome
Back, Kotter, and The Jackson 5; sharing close-up seating with Wonder Woman, Batman, Green Lantern,
and other DC superheroes; as well as Warner and DC employees.
This was an excellent read and since there’s two editions (reissued in 2010)-one edition reprinted the
original story at its original treasury size, while a deluxe edition (featuring a new cover by Neal Adams)
included additional content dating back to the original book's publication-now available, you have no
excuse to read it!
Geek Reads
Comics are an excellent way of learning how to read but there are other books out there traveling
through space that you might want to take a look at. Some of these I’ve read or am currently reading
while others I have not yet read but want to read. If you have any suggestions please email me at
[email protected]. Now I think you’re gonna like these geek reads but as kids from an excellent show
on PBS used to say “You can’t take my word for it!”
