High Holy Days 8-9

Inside this issue:

Fellow Congregants,

I hope this message finds all of you having a great summer. The TOL Board is

working hard to ensure a sustainable year of programming and upcoming

events for 5779. Thank you to our House and Grounds Committee. Our

property has never looked so beautiful. You are an amazing group of talented

volunteers.

Please remember that the High Holy Days start early this year: September 9th is

Erev Rosh HaShanah, so mark your calendars. It is an honor to serve as your

President again this year, and I look forward to seeing all of you over the

holidays!

FROM THE RABBI

Wishing You a Meaningful Elul,

Rabbi Eric Mollo

From the Rabbi

Dear Friends,

The High Holy Days are just over a month away and we will soon enter into

the Hebrew month of Elul which is known as a time of great introspection

as we prepare ourselves for a larger dose than usual of cheshbon

hanefesh (soul gazing). Before we delve into the turning of the year and

the turning of our hearts, we join in the celebration of two more b’nei

mitzvah students, Kerry Reddy and Sheldon Coffman, as they are called to

the Torah for the first time. Elul officially starts at sundown on August 10th

and Selichot falls at sundown following Shabbat on September 1st.

Selichot is a special transitional observance that involves the changing of

all Torah and sacred furniture covers to white covers as a physical

reminder of purity; we also hear the familiar chants of Al Cheit and Avinu

As part of my own preparation for the High Holy Days during Elul, I participate in a daily meditation

guided by the Jewels of Elul – a collection of inspirational pieces from influential Jewish and non-Jewish

sources. By visiting the website below, you can sign up to receive free meditations every day that you

can also use to guide your personal reflection.

http://www.jewelsofelul.com/receive-a-jewel-a-day/

Malkeinu that call us to that special feeling of openness to improvement many of us experience at this

time of year. We are also blessed to share this first taste of the High Holy Days with our friends from Beth

Shalom who will be joining us at Tree of Life this year. Even prior to Selichot, the Hebrew month of Elul

provides us with daily opportunities to conduct life review, call ourselves to account, and do the real work

necessary for tangible change as we kick off the New Year of 5779.

From the Education Director

Our first session of religious school is Sunday, September 16th. Classes begin at

9am, but I hope you will join us for a pancake breakfast at 8:45 to kick off the year!

If you have any questions or concerns about religious school or the enrollment process, please feel free to call

or email me.

We have a wonderful program here at TOL, one in which our kids are not only learning about Judaism and He-

brew, but also critical thinking, social & emotional intelligence, and problem solving. Be sure to recommend the

program to your friends and let them know about all the advantages of being a member at TOL!

Ice Cream Social

WRJ / Sisterhood Brotherhood

After a brief summer hiatus, WRJ is planning two big

events for August!

First is our annual YES Fund Brunch – formerly the

Silver Bowl Tea – benefiting the WRJ Youth,

Education, and Special Projects fund. For the first

time, we will be holding the event at TOL, on Sunday

August 12, 2018 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. We

will have scrumptious food, an opportunity to mix

and mingle, and a short presentation on the work of

the YES Fund. Please see our flyer on page 10 to

learn about all the important causes that the YES

Fund Supports! All TOL and Columbia Jewish

community ladies are invited. We hope to have

baby-sitting for their kids, with their own brunch and

activities.

Next, we are teaming with the TOL Membership

Committee and the TOL Brotherhood to bring back

the much-missed Ice Cream Social for the Oneg

Shabbat August 24, 2018. We want to welcome

new TOL members, make the feel at home, and

show appreciation for all of our members. We will

have tables staffed by WRJ, Brotherhood, and other

TOL teams and committees, to show all of the ways

that you can become more involved in TOL – and

meet folks and have fun while doing it!

Finally, we are getting ready to roll out our

membership campaign, based on our new, inclusive

membership model, so that everyone can

participate in WRJ events and activities.

The Brotherhood Board hopes you all have had a

great summer. As we approach the new school

year, it's time to get going again to support the TOL

Religious School and the Tree of Life. The board is

meeting soon to plan out our upcoming events and

service projects. Right off the bat, please plan on

helping with our traditional pancake breakfast for

the first day of Sunday School. This will be on

September 16th. Please let me know if you can

come out that morning to help.

If you have any ideas or suggestions for the

Brotherhood, please feel free to contact me.

([email protected] or [email protected])

Stay tuned for more to come.

Eric Feuerstein,

Brotherhood President
