Care for Creation Theological Statement“The earth is the Lord’s and everything therein.” Creation is God’s gift to us – the gift of good land, good water, good air – and we are placed

in the garden to tend and care for the earth as God’s stewards, as earthkeepers. We keep the faith in part by keeping the earth, by

conserving it in good health for future generations, exercising restraint for the sake of others yet to come, repairing and restoring what has come undone out of love for the Creator and compassion for others.

Rev. Benjamin WebbSt. Luke's Episcopal Church

Cedar Falls, Iowa

Carbon Footprint

What is a Carbon Footprint?

• Your carbon footprint is the measure of how much global warming pollution you produce in your daily activities.

• Measured in pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2).

Page 16: Cool Congregations Training Workshop

Cool Congregations Workshop 16

Carbon Footprint

Why are our feet so big?• Autos• Flights• Electricity• Gas, or…(gas, oil or propane)• Garbage

Page 17: Cool Congregations Training Workshop

Cool Congregations Workshop 17

How Do We Fare?

Average American emits 21,000 pounds of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) annually

• 2 times that of Germany, per person• 3.5 times that of Sweden• 5 times that of Mexico and China

Page 18: Cool Congregations Training Workshop

Cool Congregations Workshop 18

How Do We Feel?

We comprise 4% of the World’s population, but are responsible for between 25 – 30 % of the earth’s CO2 emissions!

Moral Issue

"The climate crisis is not a political issue, it is a moral and spiritual challenge to all of humanity. It is also our greatest opportunity to lift global consciousness to a higher level."

Al Gore, Nobel Peace Prize Winner ‘07

Carbon Footprint Checklist1) UTILITY INFO totals for the last 12 months

Electricity (kWh) _____________________________________

Heat (You only use one of the following in your home)

Heating Oil (in gallons) __________________________

Propane (in gallons) ____________________________

Didn't save your last 12 months of bills?

MidAmerican - find your account number on your latest bill and go to www.midamericanenergy.com, establish a user name and password, enter your account number and print off your last 12 months of bills.

25 Simple Steps Under $25Home Heating and Cooling

Ask your utility company for a home energy audit to find out where your home is poorly insulated or energy-inefficient.

CO2 reduction: Potentially, thousands of pounds a year.

Don't overheat or overcool rooms. Adjust your thermostat (lower in winter, higher in summer)

CO2 reduction (for each 2-degree adjustment): 500 pounds a year.

The Power of 10%

St. Luke’s 35 families = 18 cars off the roads

Every Cedar Valley household = 21,000 cars

Every Iowa household = 604,000 cars

Page 33: Cool Congregations Training Workshop

St. Luke’s Biggest Losers!

• 67 tons• 9% average

• Saved $5000 just on utilities!

Page 34: Cool Congregations Training Workshop

Cool Congregations Workshop 34

The CO2 emissions coming just from the electricity in Kate Dunning's home used to total 20,000 pounds. • Changed 75% of her bulbs to compact fluorescent • 50% reduction in her electricity use • Should save 10,000 pounds of CO2 this year alone, just from switching bulbs

• Initial investment = just under $200 • Reached payback after 4 months• Annual savings will be $600.
