HEALTH & SOCIAL CAREHealth and social care is an attractive career pathway for individuals who wish to pursue a career in the health and/or social care sectors but do not initially wish to pursue professional careers in medicine, nursing or social work. There is also the potential to pursue such career pathways at postgraduate level.

The degree is excellent preparation for students seeking administrative and managerial type roles within various health and social care settings. It would also be highly relevant in the voluntary and independent sectors and to major charitable organisations with either a health or social care focus.

Social workers work with individuals and families in vulnerable circumstances to help improve outcomes in their lives. This may be helping to protect people from harm or abuse or supporting people to live independently. Social workers support people, act as advocates and direct people to the services they may require. The role of a social worker can be challenging; they often face difficult situations in which they have to apply their professional judgement and make tough decisions.

Social workers need good communication skills as they have to engage with individuals, their friends, family and other services such as health, police, schools, voluntary organisations and probation services.

Social Policy is - both an academic subject and an applied field with real world significance in meeting our human needs and promoting individual and social wellbeing. Osteopathy is a manner of detecting, treating and preventing conditions that affect the musculoskeletal system, namely muscles, ligaments, nerves and joints, in a holistic and scientifically based way – as stated by the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC.)

It is based on the principle that the wellbeing of an individual depends on their bones, muscles, ligaments and connective tissue functioning smoothly together. It aims to reduce pain whilst improving mobility by using gentle manual therapies rather than drugs or surgical intervention.

Osteopaths are highly competent healthcare professionals, who are recognised by the NHS as fully qualified to diagnose and treat independently.

PARAMEDIC SCIENCEFew careers are as demanding, fast moving and rewarding as that of a paramedic. A paramedic is usually the senior healthcare professional at an accident or a medical emergency. Midwifery is a very responsible career that has incredible rewards to offset the dedication required.

Midwifery is becoming more community based with many midwives delivering services in a woman’s home, GP surgeries, local clinics and children’s centres. There is also the option to be based in a hospital where there are opportunities to work on antenatal, labour and postnatal wards and in neonatal units.

Maternity Care Support Workers work under the supervision of qualified midwives and assist in the care of mothers and babies. Doulas are lay childbirth support workers who assist mothers in pregnancy, birth and new motherhood. Maternity Care encompasses pregnancy, birth, infant feeding and motherhood based on the belief that childbearing is a normal life event, and that enhancing the physiology of childbearing enhances womens' experiences of birth and motherhood.


Although there are no other specific entry requirements, candidates will be expected to display an understanding of maternity care and the ability and commitment to study at this level.

The healthcare science team play a vital role in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of a huge number of medical conditions, working alongside doctors, nurses and other health professions; healthcare scientists are essential members of today’s healthcare team. Rapid advances in technology mean this is now one of the most exciting, challenging and rewarding areas to work in the NHS.

AUDIOLOGY B610An audiologist works with a diverse range of patients of all ages and backgrounds. They work as part of a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals to assess hearing and balance function and diagnose the pathological conditions that impair this function. They provide appropriate therapeutic rehabilitation and management.

CARDIAC PHYSIOLOGY B1B8Cardiac physiologists work with those suspected or known to have heart disease. A cardiac physiologist’s work combines patient assessment and use of specialist equipment to gain diagnostic data about heart structure and function in patients ranging from babies to the elderly. They will provide diagnostic reports to their healthcare colleagues.

Healthcare scientists in cardiac physiology have considerable responsibility, performing complex tests and interpreting the results. They will be expected to teach and supervise other members of the team and will often work in a management role with responsibility for resources (such as staff, budgets or equipment).

RESPIRATORY AND SLEEP SCIENCES B121Respiratory physiologists work with patients suspected or known to have disease of the respiratory system. The day-to-day work of a respiratory physiologist includes performing tests using a variety of skills, techniques and equipment, whilst they are at rest or during exercise - to obtain diagnostic data about respiratory structures and their function. They will use this data to produce clinical reports that will be used by the healthcare team to inform diagnosis and direct therapy.

Respiratory physiologists also work specifically with patients who have poor sleep quality, by monitoring them - often using home monitoring but sometimes in a sleep laboratory - and help to identify individual problems which require treatment and long-term management.

RADIATION PHYSICS B1F4Radiation Physicists work to ensure the safety of the public, patients and practitioners that use or might be exposed to radiation in its many different forms. They understand and apply the legal regulations relating to radiation use in all environments. They work to ensure that radiation emitting materials and equipment are used and calibrated precisely and used safely.

NUCLEAR MEDICINE B990Nuclear medicine is a specialist branch of medical physics technology where radioactive material is used to diagnose or treat disease such as cancer, heart disease, neurological disorders and other abnormalities within the body. The techniques used look at both the physiology (functioning) and the anatomy of the body in establishing diagnosis and treatment.

Those specialising in nuclear medicine will need excellent communication and interpersonal skills as it is a patient-facing role.

RADIOTHERAPY PHYSICS B1F3Radiotherapy is the treatment of cancer with high energy radiation such as X-rays.

The role of the radiotherapist is to develop the individual treatment plan using advanced computer calculations. Planning starts with imaging of the tumour usually by CT or MRI. The tumour is then outlined and the target volume determined. The direction and energy of the beams is then calculated to ensure maximum effect on the tumour with minimal effect on the surrounding tissues.

A radiotherapist ensures equipment used in radiotherapy is calibrated precisely and used safely, enabling the radiotherapy team to update the treatment plan during a course of treatment.WHAT CAREERS ARE AVAILABLE?
